Tilting your head to the side with the affected ear facing down is the simplest and most effective first step. In most cases, gravity combined with a gentle tug on your earlobe will do the job. But when water gets trapped deeper in the ear canal, you may need a few more tricks to coax it out.
Why Water Gets Stuck in the First Place
Your ear canal is a narrow, cylinder-shaped tube that ends at the eardrum. The tightest spot, called the isthmus, narrows to just a few millimeters across. At that scale, surface tension (the same force that lets water bead up on a countertop) is strong enough to hold a small plug of water in place against gravity. Your ear canal is also lined with a waxy, water-repelling coating called cerumen. Rather than letting water slide past, this wax pins water droplets in place, which is why shaking your head alone doesn’t always work.
There’s another factor working against you. When water sits between the eardrum and the narrow point of the canal, tilting your head creates a sealed air pocket above the water. As the water tries to fall out, that pocket expands and drops in pressure, essentially pulling the water back up like a suction cup. This is the same physics behind why you have to tip a bottle of thick liquid back and forth to pour it out. Understanding this helps explain why the methods below work: they all either break the seal, widen the canal, or bypass surface tension entirely.
Gravity and Movement
Tilt your head so the affected ear points straight down. While holding that position, gently pull your earlobe in different directions. This straightens and slightly widens the ear canal, giving water a clearer path out. Hold the position for 30 seconds or so. If you can, lie on your side with a towel under your head for a few minutes to let gravity do the work slowly.
Moving your jaw can also help. Chewing gum or exaggerating a yawn opens the eustachian tubes, the small passages that connect your middle ear to the back of your throat. This can shift pressure inside the ear just enough to release trapped water. You can combine jaw movement with a head tilt for the best effect.
The Palm Vacuum Method
With your head tilted so the wet ear faces down, cup the palm of your hand tightly over your ear opening to form a seal. Then gently press in and pull away in a pumping motion. This creates and releases a light suction that can dislodge water stuck at the narrow point of the canal. Think of it as breaking that air-pressure seal described above. A few gentle pumps are usually enough. Don’t press hard or slap your ear, as that can push water deeper or hurt the eardrum.
The Hair Dryer Technique
The CDC recommends using a hair dryer set to the lowest heat and lowest fan speed, held several inches from your ear. The warm air speeds evaporation of the trapped water without requiring it to physically drain out. Pull your earlobe down gently to open the canal while you do this. Keep the dryer moving rather than pointing it in one fixed spot, and never use a high heat setting.
Alcohol and Vinegar Drops
A 50/50 mix of rubbing alcohol and white vinegar is a well-known home remedy recommended by Stanford Health Care. The alcohol lowers the surface tension of the trapped water and evaporates quickly, carrying moisture with it. The vinegar makes the ear canal slightly acidic, which discourages bacteria and fungi from growing in the leftover dampness.
To use it, tilt your head so the affected ear faces up and put a few drops of the mixture into the ear canal. Wait about 30 seconds, then tilt your head the other way to let everything drain out onto a towel. One important rule: do not use any liquid drops if you have ear tubes, a punctured eardrum, or any existing ear drainage. Liquid can pass through a hole in the eardrum and cause a painful infection in the middle ear.
What Not to Do
Cotton swabs are the most common mistake. Pushing anything into the ear canal can compact earwax against the eardrum, scratch the canal lining, or push water even deeper. Fingers carry the same risks on a larger scale. Avoid using hydrogen peroxide as a first resort for simple water removal; it’s better suited for wax buildup under a doctor’s guidance. And never try to create suction with a pointed object or a syringe at home.
Signs of Swimmer’s Ear
If water stays trapped for too long, the moist environment can breed bacteria, leading to an outer ear infection known as swimmer’s ear. Early signs include persistent itching inside the ear and mild discomfort when you tug on the earlobe. As it progresses, symptoms can include redness of the outer ear, muffled hearing, a plugged-up feeling, swollen glands near the ear, drainage, and pain that spreads to the head, neck, or side of the face. Fever is a sign the infection has become more serious. Swimmer’s ear generally needs prescription ear drops to clear up, so if your symptoms go beyond simple water-in-the-ear discomfort, it’s worth getting checked.
How to Prevent It Next Time
The easiest prevention is keeping water out of the canal in the first place. A snug bathing cap covers the ears during swimming. Standard foam or silicone earplugs work well for casual swimmers, while custom-fitted swim molds from an audiologist offer a tighter seal for people who are in the water frequently or who are especially prone to trapped water. Children’s ear canals are narrower (averaging about 1.6 mm in radius compared to 3 mm in adults), so they tend to trap water more easily and benefit the most from earplugs.
After every swim or shower, tilt your head to each side and let water drain, then dry your ears thoroughly with a towel. Pulling the earlobe in different directions while the ear faces down helps open the canal.
