Tilting your head to the side and gently tugging your earlobe is the fastest way to get water out of your ear, but it doesn’t always work. Water gets trapped because your ear canal narrows at a point called the isthmus, and surface tension holds the water in place more strongly than gravity can pull it out. The good news: several simple techniques can break that seal and let the water drain.
Why Water Gets Stuck
Your ear canal isn’t a straight, open tube. It curves and narrows partway in, creating a bottleneck between the outer canal and the eardrum. Water that slips past this narrow point gets held there by surface tension, the same force that lets a drop of water cling to a window. The waxy coating inside your ear canal actually makes this worse: it’s hydrophobic (water-repelling), which pins water droplets in place rather than letting them slide freely along the skin.
When you tilt your head to let water drain, the air pocket sealed above the water column creates a small vacuum effect. As the water tries to fall out, the air pressure behind it drops, pulling the water back in. That’s why a simple head tilt often isn’t enough, and why the techniques below work by either breaking the surface tension or disrupting that pressure seal.
Gravity and Movement
Start with the simplest approach. Tilt your head so the affected ear points straight down, making the ear canal as vertical as possible. While holding this position, gently pull your earlobe down and back. This straightens and widens the canal slightly, giving the water a clearer path out. Hop on one foot a few times in this position. The jostling helps overcome the surface tension holding the water in place.
If that doesn’t work, lie on your side with the affected ear facing down and rest for a few minutes. Sometimes patience and a sustained angle are all it takes for gravity to win.
The Palm Suction Method
This technique uses gentle pressure changes to break the vacuum seal trapping the water. Tilt your head so the affected ear faces down, then cup your palm flat over the entire ear opening. Press your palm in toward your head, then pull it away in a pumping motion. You should feel a slight suction and release each time. Repeat this several times, then tilt your head down to let the water drain.
The pumping action alternately compresses and decompresses the air in the canal, which destabilizes the water column enough for it to break free. Be gentle. You’re creating small pressure shifts, not trying to force anything.
A Hairdryer on Low
Evaporation works when draining doesn’t. Set a hairdryer to its lowest heat setting and hold it at a safe distance from your ear, roughly a foot away. The warm, dry air flowing into the canal speeds up evaporation without risking a burn. Move the dryer slowly back and forth rather than holding it in one spot. A minute or two is usually enough for a small amount of trapped water.
Alcohol-Based Ear Drops
Over-the-counter ear drying drops are designed specifically for this problem. Most contain about 95% isopropyl alcohol and 5% glycerin. The alcohol mixes with the trapped water, lowers its surface tension, and evaporates quickly, carrying the moisture with it. You can find these at any pharmacy, typically labeled as “ear dry” or “swimmer’s ear” drops.
You can also make your own version at home. Stanford Health Care recommends a 50/50 mix of rubbing alcohol and white vinegar. The alcohol handles evaporation, while the vinegar creates a mildly acidic environment that discourages bacterial growth. Tilt your head, put a few drops in the affected ear, wait 30 seconds, then tilt the other way to let everything drain out.
One important caveat: don’t use alcohol-based drops if you have a perforated eardrum, ear tubes, or an active ear infection. The alcohol will cause significant pain and can damage exposed tissue.
What Not to Do
Cotton swabs are the most common mistake. Inserting a swab into the ear canal acts like a plunger, pushing wax and water deeper rather than removing them. Beyond being ineffective, swabs can puncture the eardrum, cause hearing loss, and in severe cases damage structures behind the ear canal badly enough to cause prolonged vertigo, loss of taste, or facial paralysis. The same goes for fingers, bobby pins, or anything else you might think to insert. Nothing smaller than your elbow belongs in your ear canal.
When Trapped Water Becomes an Infection
Water that sits in the ear canal for too long creates a warm, moist environment where bacteria thrive. This leads to swimmer’s ear (otitis externa), an infection of the outer ear canal. Symptoms develop quickly, usually within 48 hours, and include ear pain, itching, a feeling of fullness, and sometimes muffled hearing or jaw pain. A telltale sign is tenderness when you press on the small flap of cartilage in front of the ear opening or when you tug the outer ear.
Most cases of swimmer’s ear clear up with prescription ear drops within one to three days. If your symptoms haven’t improved after 72 hours of treatment, or if you develop a fever, notice discharge, or the pain spreads beyond the ear, get reassessed promptly. People with diabetes or weakened immune systems are at higher risk for a more serious form of the infection that requires aggressive treatment.
Preventing the Problem
If you swim regularly or deal with trapped water often, prevention saves a lot of frustration. Silicone earplugs, especially moldable ones with a stem for a tight seal, are the most effective barrier. Avoid disposable foam earplugs for water activities since foam absorbs water and holds it right against your ear. Custom-molded earplugs from an audiologist offer the best fit and seal if you’re in the water frequently. Swim caps provide some protection but don’t seal around the ears reliably enough to keep water out on their own.
After swimming or showering, tilt your head to each side for a few seconds and let any water run out while the canal is still warm and the water hasn’t settled deep. A few drops of the alcohol-vinegar mix after water exposure can dry residual moisture before it becomes a problem.
