If your blood pressure is elevated and you want to bring it down right now, a few strategies can help within minutes to hours: slow breathing, hydration, warmth, and physical stillness. None of these replace long-term treatment, but they can meaningfully lower a reading in the short term. A slow breathing practice alone can reduce systolic pressure by up to 10 points.
Before trying anything, know the number that changes the plan entirely. A reading of 180/120 mm Hg or higher is a hypertensive crisis. If you see that number alongside chest pain, shortness of breath, or stroke symptoms (sudden weakness, slurred speech, vision changes), call 911. That situation requires emergency medical treatment, not home remedies.
Slow Your Breathing First
The fastest tool you have is your own breathing. Slowing your breath rate to six to ten breaths per minute activates your body’s parasympathetic nervous system, which relaxes blood vessel walls and lowers heart rate. A few cautions apply. If you have unstable chest pain, poorly controlled high blood pressure, or serious heart problems, skip this approach. And if your systolic pressure is already on the low side (around 110 or below), excessive heat can drop it too far and make you dizzy or lightheaded. Some approaches won’t rescue a high reading in the next 20 minutes, but they can lower your baseline within days to weeks. If you’re dealing with consistently elevated numbers, these are worth starting now.
Potassium-Rich Foods
Potassium helps your kidneys flush out excess sodium, one of the primary drivers of high blood pressure. The World Health Organization recommends at least 3,510 mg of potassium per day. Most people fall well short of that. Bananas get all the credit, but a medium baked potato, a cup of cooked spinach, or a cup of white beans each deliver more potassium per serving. Increasing your intake through food (not supplements, unless your doctor has recommended them) starts shifting the sodium-potassium balance within days.
Hibiscus Tea
Hibiscus tea has surprisingly strong evidence behind it. In a USDA-funded trial, drinking three cups of hibiscus tea daily for six weeks lowered systolic blood pressure by 7.2 points compared to a placebo.
