Establishing the Ideal Outdoor Environment

The plant requires bright, indirect light to maintain its coloration and encourage blooming, but it is highly susceptible to scorching from direct sun exposure. In its native environment, Aphelandra squarrosa grows beneath the dense canopy of larger trees, receiving only dappled or filtered light.
A sheltered location, such as under a tree canopy, a covered porch, or a patio overhang, offers the best protection from harsh midday sun. Prolonged exposure to intense light quickly leads to brown spots and crispy leaf edges. Finding a spot that receives morning sun or filtered light throughout the day provides the necessary energy without causing leaf burn.
Temperature is a requirement for this tropical species. Zebra Plants thrive in warm conditions, with an ideal daytime range between 65°F and 80°F. The plant must not be moved outdoors until nighttime temperatures are consistently above 60°F. Exposure to temperatures below 55°F can cause severe leaf drop and stress the plant.
