How To Grow Your Oenis

Most methods marketed for penis enlargement don’t work, and some carry serious risks. The options with any clinical backing are limited to traction devices (for length) and injectable fillers (for girth), both with significant caveats. Before exploring what’s available, it helps to know that the average erect penis length, based on a meta-analysis of over 55,000 men, is roughly 13.9 cm (about 5.5 inches). Many people seeking enlargement already fall within the normal range.

What the Averages Actually Look Like

A 2023 systematic review published in the Journal of Urology analyzed 75 studies spanning nearly 80 years and including data from 55,761 men worldwide. The pooled averages were 8.7 cm (3.4 inches) flaccid, 12.9 cm (5.1 inches) stretched, and 13.9 cm (5.5 inches) erect. There’s natural variation around these numbers, but if you’re within a centimeter or two in either direction, you’re statistically normal. Dissatisfaction with size is far more common than genuinely below-average measurements.

Traction Devices Have Limited Evidence

Penile traction therapy is the only non-surgical method with data from randomized controlled trials showing measurable length gains. These devices apply a gentle, sustained stretch to the penis over weeks or months. In a trial published in the Journal of Urology, men who used a traction device for 30 to 90 minutes daily gained an average of 1.6 cm (about 0.6 inches) in length compared to 0.3 cm in the control group. That difference was statistically significant, but it’s worth putting in perspective: the actual gain is modest.

The original research on traction therapy was conducted in men with Peyronie’s disease (a condition involving scar tissue that causes penile curvature) and in men recovering from prostate surgery, not in healthy men seeking cosmetic enlargement. Whether the same results apply to the general population isn’t well established. Traction also requires consistent daily use over months, and it won’t change girth.

Pills and Supplements Don’t Work

No pill, powder, or herbal supplement has ever been shown to increase penis size. The National Institutes of Health states plainly that none of the dietary supplements marketed for sexual enhancement have been proven safe or effective. Researchers have looked at various herbal ingredients, but the studies are small, often conducted in animals rather than people, and none demonstrate physical growth.

Many of these products have been found to contain hidden pharmaceutical drugs, including unlisted ingredients that can interact dangerously with other medications. The FDA has issued hundreds of warnings about tainted sexual enhancement supplements. If a product promises size gains from a capsule, it’s not backed by science.

Vacuum Pumps Provide Temporary Effects Only

Vacuum erection devices draw blood into the penis using suction, producing an erection. They’re a legitimate treatment for erectile dysfunction, but they do not cause permanent growth. MedlinePlus, a resource maintained by the National Library of Medicine, is direct on this point: “Despite claims by some manufacturers, using a VED will not increase the size of the penis over time.” Once you remove the device and constriction band, the penis returns to its normal size.

Injectable Fillers Can Increase Girth

Hyaluronic acid injections, the same type of filler used in cosmetic facial procedures, can increase penile girth. In a study published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine, men who received filler injections saw their circumference increase from an average of 7.5 cm to 11.4 cm at one month, a gain of nearly 4 cm (about 1.5 inches). That increase held steady through 18 months of follow-up with minimal decrease.

These results sound dramatic, but there are important limitations. Hyaluronic acid fillers are not permanent and will eventually be absorbed by the body, requiring repeat procedures. The injections can cause lumping, asymmetry, or migration of the filler material. This is an off-label cosmetic procedure, and outcomes depend heavily on the skill of the provider. It also only affects girth, not length.

Surgery Carries Real Risks

Surgical options for penis enlargement exist, but most urologists advise against them for men with normal anatomy. The most common lengthening procedure involves cutting the suspensory ligament that anchors the penis to the pubic bone, allowing more of the internal shaft to hang externally. This can add visible length when flaccid but doesn’t necessarily change erect length, and it can make erections less stable since the anchoring ligament has been cut.

Complications from enlargement surgery include scarring, infection, loss of sensation, erectile dysfunction, and dissatisfaction with results. Cleveland Clinic notes that scarring can actually lead to a shorter penis if revision surgery becomes necessary, and kinks or bends can develop from scar tissue. Because of these risks, many surgeons won’t perform the procedure on someone whose penis is within the normal size range.

Manual Exercises Can Cause Harm

Jelqing, a technique that involves repeatedly squeezing and pulling the semi-erect penis, is widely promoted online but has no clinical evidence supporting size gains. What it does have is documented risks. Repeated microtrauma from jelqing can cause scar tissue to form inside the penis, potentially leading to Peyronie’s disease, a condition that causes painful curvature. Other reported side effects include bruising, skin irritation, and erectile dysfunction.

The penis is not a muscle that responds to exercise by growing larger. It’s primarily composed of spongy tissue and blood vessels, and forceful manipulation is more likely to damage those structures than to stimulate growth.

What Actually Affects How Size Looks and Feels

Several factors influence how large the penis appears without any device or procedure. Excess pubic fat can obscure the base of the shaft, so losing weight can reveal length that’s already there. Trimming pubic hair creates a visual difference as well. Improving cardiovascular health through exercise leads to stronger erections, which maximizes your natural size since erections depend on blood flow.

It’s also worth noting that most sexual partners report that size matters far less than technique, communication, and overall intimacy. Surveys consistently show that men are more concerned about their size than their partners are. If anxiety about size is affecting your confidence or sexual function, that’s a real issue worth addressing, but the solution is more likely psychological support than a physical intervention with uncertain results and real risks.
