How to Heal a Blister on the Bottom of Your Foot

Most blisters on the bottom of your foot heal within one to two weeks if you protect them from further friction and keep the area clean. The key decision is whether to drain the blister or leave it alone, and that depends on its size and location. A blister on a weight-bearing surface like the sole of your foot is harder to ignore than one on your heel or toe, because every step presses directly into it.

Leave It Intact or Drain It

A small, intact blister that isn’t causing much pain is best left alone. The fluid inside (called serum) acts as a natural cushion while new skin forms underneath. If the blister is small, roughly the size of a coin or less, superficial, and shows no signs of infection, the skin roof is the best bandage your body can make.

Blisters on the bottom of your foot, though, sit on a surface that bears your full weight. That constant pressure makes them more likely to burst on their own, which raises the infection risk. If the blister is large, painful, or clearly going to pop from walking, draining it yourself in a clean way is the better option. Letting it rupture randomly inside a sweaty shoe is worse than a controlled drain at home.

How to Drain a Blister Safely

The goal is to release the fluid while keeping the skin roof intact. That loose flap of skin protects the raw layer underneath like a biological bandage.

  • Wash your hands and the blister thoroughly with soap and water.
  • Swab the blister with rubbing alcohol or another antiseptic.
  • Sterilize a needle by wiping it with rubbing alcohol or an antiseptic wipe.
  • Pierce the blister near its edge in two or three spots. Pricking near the edge lets gravity do the work when you’re standing.
  • Gently press the fluid out but leave the overlying skin completely in place.
  • Apply antibiotic ointment and cover with a clean bandage.

After several days, the skin roof will dry out and start to separate. At that point, you can trim the dead skin away with small scissors sterilized with rubbing alcohol. Until then, leave it attached.

Protecting the Blister While You Walk

Covering a sole blister with a regular adhesive bandage rarely works. The bandage shifts, bunches, or peels off within minutes of walking. Two better options exist: hydrocolloid blister plasters and moleskin donut pads.

Hydrocolloid plasters (sold under brands like Compeed) are thick, cushioned patches with a gel layer that absorbs moisture and creates a sealed healing environment over the blister. They stick firmly, provide immediate pressure relief, and can stay in place for several days. For a blister on the sole, they’re often the simplest solution because they’re designed to handle friction and movement.

Moleskin works differently. Instead of covering the blister directly, you build a raised ring around it so your weight lands on the padding instead of the blister itself. Cut a piece of moleskin about three-quarters of an inch larger than the blister on all sides. Fold it in half, then cut a half-circle from the folded edge that’s roughly half the size of the blister. When you unfold it, you’ll have a donut shape. Peel the adhesive backing and place it so the blister sits inside the hole. If the blister still rises above the moleskin, stack a second layer on top.

Signs of Infection

An uninfected blister contains clear or slightly yellowish fluid. Watch for these changes, which signal that bacteria have entered the wound:

  • Cloudy, milky, or greenish fluid inside or draining from the blister
  • Spreading redness or discoloration around the blister that extends outward over hours or days
  • Increasing warmth and swelling in the surrounding skin
  • Worsening pain rather than gradual improvement
  • Red streaks moving away from the blister toward your ankle
  • Fever or chills

These are signs of cellulitis, a bacterial skin infection that can progress quickly. Early cellulitis looks like a patch of skin that’s slightly warmer and more discolored than the area around it. As it spreads, the skin darkens, swells, and becomes increasingly tender. This needs medical treatment with antibiotics, not home care.

Why Foot Blisters Need Extra Attention With Diabetes

If you have diabetes, a blister on the bottom of your foot carries significantly more risk than it does for the general population. Peripheral neuropathy, the nerve damage that often accompanies diabetes, reduces your ability to feel pain and temperature in your feet. About half of people with neuropathy don’t have noticeable symptoms, which means you might not feel a blister forming or worsening. A small blister can silently progress to an open wound and then to a serious infection.

People with diabetes also tend to have reduced blood flow to the feet, which slows healing and makes infections harder for the body to fight. Foot deformities like bunions or hammer toes concentrate pressure on specific spots, making blisters more likely in the first place. If you have diabetes and notice any blister, wound, or skin change on your foot, getting it evaluated by a healthcare provider rather than managing it at home is the safer path. Off-loading devices like orthotic insoles or specialized boots can redistribute pressure while the area heals.

Preventing Future Blisters on Your Soles

Blisters form when friction and moisture combine to separate the upper layers of skin. On the bottom of your foot, this usually happens from ill-fitting shoes, new footwear you haven’t broken in, or long periods of walking or running. The fix targets one or both of those triggers.

Cotton socks are one of the biggest culprits. Cotton absorbs sweat and holds it against your skin, which softens the outer layer and makes it more vulnerable to shearing forces. Moisture-wicking socks made from acrylic, nylon, or polyester pull sweat away from the skin surface and reduce the friction that starts blister formation. If you’re doing extended walking or hiking, changing your socks partway through the day makes a noticeable difference.

Double-layered socks take this a step further. The two layers slide against each other instead of against your skin, so the friction happens between the sock layers rather than on the sole of your foot. These are widely available from hiking and running brands and are worth trying if you get recurring blisters in the same spot.

Shoes should fit with about a thumb’s width of space between your longest toe and the front of the shoe. Too tight increases pressure on the sole. Too loose allows your foot to slide, generating more friction. Breaking in new shoes gradually, wearing them for short periods before a long walk, prevents the sudden overload that creates blisters in the first place.
