Most babies crawl backward before they crawl forward, and the fix comes down to building leg strength, creating the right surface, and giving your baby something worth crawling toward. Backward crawling happens because arm muscles develop faster than leg muscles, so babies push themselves in reverse before they figure out how to drive with their legs. With a few targeted strategies, you can help your baby make that shift.
Why Babies Crawl Backward First
Before babies crawl, they learn to push up on their arms during tummy time. When they first try to move, they naturally push with what’s strongest: their upper body. The result is backward motion. Their legs, hips, shoulders, and core muscles haven’t caught up yet, and coordinating all four limbs in the right sequence takes practice. Backward crawling isn’t a problem to fix. It’s a sign your baby is experimenting with mobility and building toward the real thing.
Set Up the Right Surface
The floor your baby practices on matters more than you might think. A study published in the journal Applied Ergonomics found that hardwood flooring slows crawling speed and forces babies to change their movement strategy because it offers low friction and poor shock absorption. Babies on carpet, foam joint mats, or tatami-style surfaces crawled more smoothly and at a faster rate.
If your home has hardwood or tile floors, lay down a foam play mat, a large area rug, or even a textured bathmat in your baby’s practice zone. The extra grip gives little hands and knees something to push against, which is exactly what forward crawling requires.
Build Strength With Tummy Time
Tummy time is the single most effective preparation for crawling. A systematic review of the research found that tummy time is positively associated with gross motor development and the ability to move while prone, including rolling and crawling. It strengthens the neck, shoulders, core, and hip muscles your baby needs to hold a hands-and-knees position and propel forward.
If your baby resists long stretches on their belly, start with short sessions spread throughout the day. Get down on the floor at eye level, place a favorite toy just out of reach, or use a small rolled towel under their chest for extra support. The goal is frequent, low-pressure practice rather than marathon sessions that end in frustration.
Give Their Legs Something to Push Against
One of the simplest tricks is placing your hands flat behind your baby’s feet while they’re on all fours. This gives them a firm surface to push off of, which teaches their legs how forward propulsion feels. You can also gently support their hips to help them stay up on their knees rather than collapsing flat onto their stomach. Keeping their knees tucked under them is the position that makes forward movement possible.
You’re not pushing your baby forward. You’re creating resistance so that when they extend their legs, they move in the right direction. Once they feel the connection between pushing with their feet and moving toward something they want, they start to repeat it on their own.
Use Motivation, Not Just Muscle
Babies crawl forward when they want something badly enough. Place a favorite toy, a crinkly object, or even your phone (screen off, if you can stand it) just beyond their reach while they’re on all fours. Stay close enough that the goal feels achievable. If the toy is too far away, they’ll give up. Too close, and there’s no reason to move.
You can also sit a few feet in front of your baby and call their name, clap, or hold out your hands. Babies are deeply motivated by faces and voices, and having you as the destination can be more compelling than any toy. As they get better, gradually increase the distance so they take more “steps” to reach you.
Create a Simple Obstacle Course
Once your baby starts making forward progress, small challenges help build coordination and confidence. You don’t need special equipment. Lay out a path using things from around your home: a cushion to crawl over, a large cardboard box to crawl through, a footstool to navigate around, or different textured surfaces like a fluffy blanket and a bathmat placed side by side.
Going over, under, and around obstacles teaches your baby how to coordinate large muscle groups and understand how their body moves through space. Keep everything low to the ground and soft. The point is gentle challenge, not difficulty. Swap items regularly to keep it interesting.
Crawling Isn’t a Required Milestone
Here’s something that surprises many parents: crawling has been removed from the CDC and AAP developmental milestone checklists. The evidence shows that crawling is highly variable in timing, style, and whether it happens at all. Some babies scoot on their bottoms, army crawl, roll to their destination, or skip straight to pulling up and walking. None of these alternatives signal a developmental problem.
Crawling is a temporary solution for babies who are motivated to move but don’t yet have the balance for walking. Research has not established that crawling experience contributes to learning to walk, and there’s no strong evidence that skipping crawling marks atypical development. So while the activities above can help your baby figure out forward motion, don’t panic if they find their own way to get around.
What Cross-Crawling Does for the Brain
Traditional hands-and-knees crawling does offer a neurological bonus. The alternating pattern of moving the right hand with the left knee (and vice versa) is a cross-lateral movement, meaning it crosses the body’s midline. Each time your baby does this, the connection between the left and right hemispheres of the brain gets a workout. The nerve fibers linking the two sides become more efficient, which supports coordination, balance, and bilateral skills later on.
This doesn’t mean babies who skip crawling miss out on brain development permanently. Cross-lateral movement shows up in running, climbing, swimming, and dozens of other activities throughout childhood. But it’s one reason that encouraging crawling practice, even if your baby ultimately finds a different way to get around, has value beyond just getting from point A to point B.
Signs That Warrant a Closer Look
Most crawling variations are normal. But certain physical patterns are worth paying attention to. If your baby consistently uses only one side of their body, has muscles that feel unusually stiff or unusually floppy, struggles to hold their head and neck steady, or has lost a motor skill they previously had, those are signs of a possible gross motor delay. The same applies if your baby shows no interest in any form of independent movement by 12 months, whether crawling, scooting, or pulling to stand. A pediatrician or pediatric physical therapist can assess whether extra support would help.
