Blisters on the bottom of your feet need a slightly different approach than blisters elsewhere on the body because they bear your full weight with every step. The constant pressure makes them more painful, slower to heal, and harder to protect. The good news is that most friction blisters heal within one to two weeks with proper care, and you can walk comfortably again much sooner than that with the right bandaging.
Drain It or Leave It Alone
The first decision is whether to pop the blister. For most blisters on the body, the standard advice is to leave them intact. Blisters on the soles of your feet are the exception. Clinical guidelines from the British Burn Association specifically recommend draining thick-walled blisters on palms and soles because they cause significant discomfort and limit your ability to walk. The fluid-filled bubble sits right where pressure hits hardest, so draining it allows the area to flatten and reduces pain when you stand.
If the blister is very small (under about 6 millimeters, roughly the size of a pencil eraser), it’s fine to leave it alone. Small blisters at that size are unlikely to rupture on their own and may resolve without intervention. Anything larger, especially if it’s tense and painful when you walk, benefits from draining.
How to Drain a Blister Safely
Wash your hands and the blistered area thoroughly with soap and water. Apply rubbing alcohol or an antiseptic to the blister surface. Then sterilize a sharp needle by wiping it with rubbing alcohol or an antiseptic wipe.
Prick the blister in several spots near its edge, not in the center. Let the fluid drain out, but leave the overlying skin completely in place. That roof of skin acts as a natural bandage, protecting the raw tissue underneath from bacteria and friction. After draining, apply a thin layer of antibiotic ointment and cover the area with a bandage.
If the blister has already torn open on its own, gently clean the area and leave whatever skin is still attached. Only trim away skin that’s hanging loose or clearly dead, as it can trap bacteria underneath.
The Best Bandaging for Weight-Bearing Blisters
A standard adhesive bandage will bunch up and peel off the sole of your foot within minutes of walking. You need something sturdier.
Hydrocolloid bandages (sold as “blister bandages” at most drugstores) are the best option for the bottom of the foot. They’re thick enough to cushion the blister, waterproof, and designed to stay put for several days. For the best adhesion, make sure the skin is completely dry before you apply one. If you’ve just put on ointment, wait for it to absorb before placing the bandage.
Moleskin is another solid choice, especially for larger blisters. If the blister is small, cut a donut shape out of a piece of moleskin so the padded ring surrounds the blister without pressing directly on it. This redistributes pressure to the healthy skin around it. For larger blisters or raw spots where the skin has already come off, cover the entire area with a flat piece of moleskin.
Whichever bandage you use, check it daily. Replace it if it gets wet, starts peeling at the edges, or if you notice increased pain underneath.
What Healing Looks Like
New skin begins forming underneath the blister roof almost immediately. Under the right conditions, a fresh layer of skin cells can cover the wound bed in roughly three days. Full healing, where the new skin toughens up enough to handle normal friction, typically takes one to two weeks. Blisters that heal within 14 days generally leave no scar at all.
During this window, the area will be tender. You may feel a stinging or burning sensation when pressure hits the spot, which is normal. Keep the blister covered and moisturized with ointment to maintain a slightly moist healing environment, which speeds up skin cell migration compared to letting the wound dry out and scab over.
Signs of Infection to Watch For
Most blisters heal without complications, but the sole of the foot is exposed to more bacteria than many other body parts. Watch for these warning signs:
- Colored pus: Green or yellow discharge from the blister means bacteria have taken hold.
- Increasing redness: Spreading redness around the blister, or red streaks extending away from it, suggests the infection is moving. On darker skin tones, this redness can be harder to spot, so pay attention to warmth and swelling instead.
- Heat: The skin around the blister feels noticeably hotter than the surrounding area.
- Worsening pain: Pain that increases after the first day or two rather than gradually improving.
If you have diabetes or poor circulation, be especially vigilant. Reduced blood flow to the feet slows healing and raises infection risk, so even a small blister warrants closer attention.
Preventing Blisters From Coming Back
Blisters form when friction pulls the top layers of skin away from the layers beneath, creating a gap that fills with fluid. On the bottom of the foot, this usually happens because your foot is sliding inside your shoe. Prevention is about reducing that sliding.
Fix Your Socks
Moisture-wicking socks reduce blister risk because dry skin creates less friction than damp skin. Cotton socks absorb sweat and hold it against your foot, increasing the grip between skin and fabric and raising shear forces. Synthetic or merino wool socks pull moisture away from the surface.
Double-layer socks take this a step further. The two layers slide against each other, so the friction happens between the sock layers instead of between the sock and your skin. This lets your skin move in sync with the underlying bone earlier in each step, which is what prevents the internal shearing that causes blisters in the first place.
Lock Your Heel in Place
If your heel lifts with each step, your entire foot shifts inside the shoe, grinding the sole against the insole. A heel lock lacing technique can fix this without buying new shoes. Lace your shoes normally up to the second-to-last eyelets, then run each lace straight up into the top eyelet on the same side to create two small vertical loops. Cross the laces and feed each end through the loop on the opposite side, then pull snug and tie normally. This cinches the shoe around your ankle and anchors your heel. Keep it tight enough to eliminate slipping but loose enough that you can wiggle your toes and feel normal circulation.
Reduce Friction Directly
Anti-friction balms or sticks applied to the sole of your foot before activity create a slippery layer that reduces shear. These work well as a first line of defense for shorter activities but may need reapplication during longer hikes or runs. For known problem spots, you can also apply moleskin or athletic tape preemptively before a blister forms. If you feel a “hot spot” developing (a warm, stinging sensation that signals a blister is about to form), stop and tape the area immediately. Catching it at the hot spot stage prevents the blister entirely.
Check Your Shoe Fit
Shoes that are too loose allow excessive sliding. Shoes that are too tight press seams and edges into your skin. Your foot also swells during prolonged walking or running, so shoes that fit perfectly in the morning may be too snug by afternoon. If you’re buying shoes for athletic use, try them on later in the day when your feet are at their largest, and leave about a thumb’s width of space between your longest toe and the front of the shoe.
