How to Help With Dry Nose: Tips and Remedies

A dry nose usually improves with a few simple changes: adding moisture to your environment, keeping nasal tissues hydrated with saline, and avoiding products or habits that strip moisture away. Most cases stem from dry indoor air, medication side effects, or seasonal changes, and you can manage them at home without any special equipment. Here’s what works and what to watch out for.

Why Your Nose Gets Dry

Your nasal passages are lined with a thin layer of mucus-producing tissue that traps dust, allergens, and germs before they reach your lungs. When that tissue dries out, you feel the familiar tightness, cracking, or burning inside your nostrils. The most common trigger is simply the air around you. Heated indoor air in winter, arid climates, and airplane cabins all pull moisture from nasal tissue faster than your body can replace it. Indoor humidity between 40% and 60% is the sweet spot for respiratory comfort; many homes and offices fall well below that range, especially during colder months.

Certain medications make the problem worse. Oral antihistamines dry out mucous membranes throughout your body, including the nose. Decongestant sprays (both the squeeze-bottle and pill forms) work by constricting blood vessels inside the nose, which reduces blood flow to the glands that produce nasal secretions. That’s why they unstuff your nose but can leave it feeling parched. Overusing decongestant sprays can even cause lasting damage to the nasal lining.

Less commonly, nutritional gaps play a role. Vitamin A supports the growth and repair of the tissue that lines your nasal passages, respiratory tract, and eyes. A deficiency can impair the health of those surfaces. Iron and vitamin D deficiencies have also been linked to chronic nasal dryness.

Use Saline to Restore Moisture

A saline spray or rinse is the single most effective tool for a dry nose. Saline mimics your body’s natural fluid balance, so it hydrates the tissue without irritating it. Over-the-counter saline sprays are inexpensive, widely available, and safe for daily use. For deeper relief, a neti pot or squeeze-bottle rinse flushes the entire nasal cavity, clearing dried mucus and soothing irritated tissue at the same time.

Water safety matters here. The FDA warns against using plain tap water for nasal rinsing because it can contain low levels of bacteria and amoebas that are harmless to swallow (stomach acid kills them) but can cause serious infections if they linger in nasal passages. Use distilled or sterile water from the store, tap water that has been boiled for 3 to 5 minutes and cooled to lukewarm, or water filtered through a device specifically designed to trap infectious organisms. Previously boiled water can be stored in a clean, sealed container but should be used within 24 hours.

If regular saline spray evaporates too quickly, look for saline gel sprays. The gel formula coats the nasal lining and holds moisture longer than a liquid mist, which is especially useful overnight or during travel.

Adjust Your Indoor Air

Running a humidifier is one of the simplest ways to prevent nasal dryness from recurring. A cool-mist humidifier in your bedroom keeps the air around 40% to 60% relative humidity, which is the range associated with the fewest respiratory complaints and the lowest risk of mold or dust mite growth. If you don’t have a hygrometer (a small humidity gauge), they cost just a few dollars and let you check whether your humidifier is doing enough.

Clean your humidifier regularly. Standing water breeds bacteria and mold, and a dirty humidifier can spray those organisms into the air you breathe, which defeats the purpose. Empty the tank daily, wipe it down, and follow the manufacturer’s cleaning schedule. If a humidifier isn’t practical, placing a shallow bowl of water near a heat source or keeping houseplants can modestly raise humidity in a small room.

Be Careful With Petroleum Jelly

Dabbing petroleum jelly inside the nostrils is a common home remedy, but it carries a real, if rare, risk. Small amounts can be inhaled into the windpipe and lungs, especially while you sleep. Over months of regular use, this buildup can cause a condition called lipoid pneumonia, an inflammation of the lungs triggered by fat-based substances. Symptoms include cough, chest pain, and shortness of breath, though some people have no symptoms at all. The only treatment is to stop using the product.

If you want a lubricant inside your nose, choose a water-soluble nasal gel instead. Apply it sparingly, and avoid using any lubricant within several hours of lying down. Water-based saline gels provide similar comfort without the aspiration risk.

Staying Hydrated From the Inside

Drinking enough water won’t cure a dry nose on its own, but dehydration makes every mucous membrane in your body drier. Your nasal lining depends on adequate fluid intake to keep producing mucus at a normal rate. Alcohol and caffeine both promote fluid loss, so if you’re already dealing with nasal dryness, cutting back on those can help your body hold onto more moisture.

Vitamin A deserves attention if your diet is limited. It plays a direct role in maintaining and repairing the epithelial tissue that lines your nose. Orange and yellow vegetables, leafy greens, eggs, and liver are all rich sources. If you suspect a deficiency, a simple blood test can confirm it.

Preventing Dry Nose During Flights

Airplane cabins are notoriously dry, with humidity levels that can drop below 20%. On long flights, this pulls moisture from your nasal passages for hours. A few targeted strategies make a noticeable difference.

  • Spray saline roughly once an hour. Pack a travel-size bottle (3 ounces or less) in your carry-on. Saline gel sprays last longer between applications than regular mist.
  • Drink water before and throughout the flight. Several glasses over the course of a long flight help maintain moisture levels across your whole body, nasal tissue included.
  • Skip alcohol and caffeine onboard. Both contribute to dehydration and accelerate the drying effect of cabin air.
  • Breathe steam when you can. Ordering hot herbal tea and inhaling the steam for a few minutes helps rehydrate nasal passages mid-flight.

When Dry Nose Points to Something Bigger

Occasional nasal dryness from weather changes, a cold, or a dry building is normal. Persistent dryness that doesn’t improve with humidification and saline, especially if it comes with crusting, nosebleeds, a foul smell, or loss of smell, may signal a more significant condition. Chronic atrophic rhinitis involves the thinning and hardening of nasal tissue, and it can develop after nasal surgery (particularly procedures that reduce the internal structures called turbinates), radiation therapy to the head and neck, or as a result of autoimmune conditions. Overuse of decongestant sprays is another known cause.

Certain medications beyond decongestants can contribute as well. If you started a new prescription and noticed your nose drying out shortly after, that connection is worth mentioning to your prescriber. Adjusting the dose or switching to an alternative sometimes resolves the issue entirely.
