Receding gums can’t grow back on their own, but you can slow the process, protect exposed roots, and in many cases restore lost tissue with professional treatment. About 42% of adults over 30 have some form of periodontal disease, and that number climbs to nearly 60% by age 65, so gum recession is extraordinarily common. The good news is that most of the factors driving it are modifiable.
Why Gums Recede in the First Place
Understanding what’s causing your recession matters because the fix depends on the cause. There are three main culprits, and many people have more than one working against them.
The most common is chronic mechanical trauma from brushing too hard. Pressing a toothbrush forcefully against delicate gum margins day after day, year after year, gradually wears tissue away. These cases often show up alongside worn-down enamel near the gum line, a telltale sign that abrasion is the problem.
The second is inflammatory periodontal disease. Bacteria in plaque trigger an immune response that slowly digests the connective tissue and bone supporting your teeth. As bone is lost, the gum follows it downward, exposing root surfaces. This type of recession tends to affect multiple teeth and gets worse without intervention.
The third is excessive bite force. When a tooth absorbs more pressure than it should (from grinding, clenching, or a misaligned bite), the stress breaks down periodontal fibers and triggers bone loss on the outer surface of the root. The gum contour follows the bone, producing a characteristic V-shaped notch of recession on individual teeth.
Why Gum Tissue Doesn’t Regrow
Unlike a cut on your skin, receded gum tissue does not regenerate to its original position. The periodontal ligament that anchors teeth to bone retains only a limited capacity to repair itself in response to mild injury. Once significant tissue and bone are lost, the body can’t rebuild that architecture without help. This is why prevention and early action matter so much. Waiting for gums to “bounce back” means the recession will only continue.
What You Can Do at Home
Fix Your Brushing Technique
If aggressive brushing is part of the problem, changing how you brush is the single most impactful thing you can do today. The modified Stillman technique is specifically designed to clean teeth without traumatizing gums. Place the bristles at a 45-degree angle toward the gum line so that half the bristles rest on the gum and half on the tooth surface. Use a combination of small circular and gentle sweeping motions. The key is light pressure. If your bristles are splaying out to the sides, you’re pushing too hard.
Switch to an Oscillating Electric Toothbrush
A large Cochrane review of over 50 trials found that powered toothbrushes reduce both plaque and gum inflammation significantly more than manual brushes, in both the short and long term. Rotation-oscillation brushes (the round-headed kind that spins back and forth) had the strongest evidence. Importantly, there was no link between powered toothbrush use and soft tissue damage, which means they’re safe even for sensitive gum lines. Many models also have pressure sensors that alert you when you’re pushing too hard.
Choose the Right Toothpaste
Toothpastes containing stannous fluoride offer a specific advantage for gum health beyond cavity prevention. In clinical trials, brushing twice daily with a stannous fluoride toothpaste for 24 weeks substantially reduced bleeding sites, gum swelling, and plaque levels compared to standard sodium fluoride toothpaste. The compound works by reducing the viability of bacteria in dental plaque, which removes a key driver of gum inflammation. It also forms a protective film on tooth surfaces that resists acid erosion. Several major brands now use stabilized stannous fluoride as their active ingredient; check the label.
Quit Smoking
Smokers face twice the risk of gum disease compared to nonsmokers, and the risk scales with both the number of cigarettes and the years spent smoking. Tobacco weakens your immune system’s ability to fight gum infections and slows healing after any damage occurs. Periodontal treatments also work less effectively in people who smoke. The CDC notes that quitting helps gums heal after treatment, so it’s never too late to see a benefit.
Professional Cleaning: Scaling and Root Planing
If your recession is driven by periodontal disease, deep cleaning (scaling and root planing) is typically the first professional step. This involves removing plaque and hardened tarite from below the gum line and smoothing rough spots on root surfaces where bacteria tend to collect. A meta-analysis of 11 randomized trials found that this procedure improved clinical attachment (how tightly gum grips tooth) by about half a millimeter compared to no treatment, measured at six months or later. That may sound small, but in periodontal terms it represents a meaningful shift from tissue loss to tissue stability.
Deep cleaning works best for pockets measuring 4 millimeters or deeper. For shallower areas, it doesn’t produce a significant change. Your dentist or periodontist will probe around each tooth to measure pocket depth and determine whether you’re a candidate. Most people need local anesthesia during the procedure, and it’s often done in two visits, one side of the mouth at a time.
Surgical Options for Advanced Recession
When recession has progressed beyond what cleaning and habit changes can manage, surgery can physically restore gum coverage over exposed roots. The approach your periodontist recommends depends on how much tissue remains, where the recession is, and your cosmetic goals.
Connective Tissue Grafts
This is the most widely used technique and produces root coverage rates of 70% to 86%. A small piece of tissue is taken from beneath the surface of your palate and placed over the exposed root, then secured under a flap of existing gum tissue. It’s best suited for cases where you still have a reasonable band of gum tissue around the affected teeth. Recovery involves some discomfort at the palate donor site, but less than you might expect; patients generally report less postoperative pain than with some alternative approaches. Costs typically run $600 to $1,200 per tooth.
Free Gingival Grafts
This technique takes tissue directly from the surface of the palate rather than from underneath it. It’s particularly useful for lower front teeth, where thin gum tissue, shallow vestibules, and high muscle attachments make other approaches difficult. Free gingival grafts are excellent at creating a thick, durable band of protective tissue (adding 2 to 6 mm of width), and they reliably stop recession from progressing. The trade-off is cosmetic: the grafted tissue often doesn’t match the surrounding color perfectly, so this approach is typically reserved for areas that don’t show when you smile. Root coverage rates range from 41% to 76%.
Pinhole Surgical Technique
A newer, less invasive option involves making a small hole in the gum tissue and using specialized instruments to gently reposition existing gums over exposed roots. No large incisions or sutures are needed. Because there’s less tissue trauma, recovery is faster than with traditional grafting. This technique works best for mild to moderate recession where there’s enough existing gum tissue to reposition.
Guided Tissue Regeneration
For recession involving significant bone loss, guided tissue regeneration is considered the gold standard. A biocompatible membrane is placed over the defect between the root surface and the remaining bone. This barrier prevents fast-growing surface cells from filling in the space and instead allows the slower-growing bone and ligament cells to repopulate the area. It’s often combined with a bone graft. The goal isn’t just to cover the root but to rebuild the full supporting structure: bone, ligament, and gum tissue.
How Severity Shapes Your Options
Dentists classify recession into categories based on how far the gum has pulled back and whether the bone between teeth is also affected. In early stages, where recession hasn’t reached the junction between firm gum tissue and the looser tissue below it, and where the bone between teeth is intact, outcomes from grafting are excellent. Full root coverage is a realistic goal.
In more advanced cases, where bone loss extends between teeth, complete coverage becomes harder to achieve. Treatment at this stage focuses on partial coverage, halting further progression, and protecting roots from sensitivity and decay. The earlier you act, the more options you have and the better the results tend to be. If you’ve noticed your teeth looking longer, sensitivity along the gum line, or a notch you can feel with your fingernail where the gum meets the tooth, those are signs worth bringing to your dentist sooner rather than later.
