How to Help With Sensitive Teeth and Stop the Pain

Sensitive teeth happen when the protective outer layer of your teeth wears down and exposes the softer layer underneath, called dentin. The good news is that most sensitivity responds well to a combination of the right toothpaste, a few habit changes, and sometimes a professional treatment. Here’s what actually works and why.

Why Teeth Become Sensitive

Dentin, the layer just beneath your enamel, is full of microscopic tubes that lead directly toward the nerve inside each tooth. When enamel thins or gum tissue recedes, those tubes become exposed. Any temperature change, sweet food, or even a gust of cold air causes the fluid inside those tiny tubes to expand or contract. That fluid movement triggers a pressure-sensitive nerve receptor, and you feel a sharp, sudden sting. This is why sensitivity tends to be brief: it lasts only as long as the stimulus is present.

The most common reasons those tubes become exposed include enamel erosion from acidic foods and drinks, aggressive brushing, gum recession, teeth grinding, and recent dental work like whitening or fillings. Identifying your specific cause matters because the best fix depends on what’s driving the problem.

Desensitizing Toothpaste: Your First Step

Switching to a desensitizing toothpaste is the simplest and most effective starting point. Most sensitivity toothpastes rely on one of two active ingredients, and they work in completely different ways.

Potassium nitrate (5%) is the ingredient found in most over-the-counter sensitivity toothpastes. It works by calming the nerve itself. Potassium ions build up around the nerve endings inside dentin over time, making them less reactive to stimuli. This means it doesn’t provide instant relief. You typically need to brush with it twice daily for two to four weeks before you notice a real difference, and the effect fades if you stop using it.

Stannous fluoride takes a different approach. Instead of calming the nerve, it physically blocks the exposed tubes in dentin by forming a protective layer over the tooth surface. Research shows that dentin treated with stannous fluoride develops a barrier that limits fluid flow through the tubes. When fluid can’t move, the nerve doesn’t fire, and you don’t feel pain. Stannous fluoride toothpastes can also help strengthen enamel and reduce bacteria that cause gum disease, making them a good all-around choice.

You don’t need to use both. Pick one and commit to it for at least a month. For an extra boost, some dentists recommend dabbing a small amount of desensitizing toothpaste directly onto the sensitive spot with your finger before bed and leaving it on overnight.

Habits That Make Sensitivity Worse

Even the best toothpaste won’t help much if you’re continuing to damage your enamel. A few common habits deserve a closer look.

Brushing too hard. A stiff-bristled brush or heavy hand gradually scrubs away enamel, especially along the gumline where teeth are most vulnerable. Switch to a soft-bristled brush and use gentle, short strokes. If your brush bristles splay outward within a month, you’re pressing too hard. An electric toothbrush with a pressure sensor can help you retrain your technique.

Acidic foods and drinks. Anything with a low pH softens enamel temporarily, and frequent exposure wears it down permanently. Orange juice sits around a pH of 3.5, cranberry juice at 2.6, and most iced teas fall between 2.5 and 3.5. Even sparkling water is more acidic than you’d expect, ranging from about 2.7 to 3.3. Coffee is milder at around 5.0 but still acidic enough to contribute over time. You don’t have to eliminate these entirely, but drinking them through a straw, rinsing your mouth with plain water afterward, and waiting at least 30 minutes before brushing (so you don’t scrub softened enamel) all make a meaningful difference.

Teeth grinding. Clenching or grinding, especially during sleep, wears enamel down fast. If you wake up with a sore jaw or your partner hears you grinding at night, a custom night guard from your dentist protects your teeth from further damage.

Professional Treatments That Help

When at-home care isn’t enough, a dentist has several options that target sensitivity more aggressively.

Fluoride varnish is the most common in-office treatment. Your dentist cleans and dries the tooth surface, then paints on a concentrated fluoride coating with a small brush. It strengthens exposed dentin and helps block those open tubes. The application takes just a few minutes, and you may need it reapplied every few months depending on how your teeth respond.

Resin-based desensitizers work like a thin sealant. After cleaning and drying the sensitive area, your dentist applies a liquid resin and hardens it with a curing light. This creates a physical barrier over the exposed dentin that lasts longer than fluoride varnish. It’s particularly useful for sensitivity caused by gum recession, where a band of root surface is permanently exposed.

Bonding or gum grafts address more advanced cases. If recession has left a significant amount of root exposed, a tooth-colored bonding material can cover the area. In severe recession, a gum graft (tissue taken from elsewhere in your mouth and placed over the exposed root) provides a permanent biological solution.

When Sensitivity Signals Something Bigger

Most tooth sensitivity is a nuisance, not an emergency. But there’s an important distinction between surface-level sensitivity and deeper inflammation of the nerve inside your tooth, a condition called pulpitis. With typical sensitivity, the pain is sharp and disappears within a second or two once you remove the trigger. With pulpitis, pain from heat, cold, or sweets lingers for more than a few seconds after the stimulus is gone. It often becomes a throbbing or aching pain that can wake you up at night.

Sensitivity that’s getting progressively worse, pain that sticks around, or discomfort that shows up without any obvious trigger are all signs that the issue has moved beyond enamel wear. These situations need a dental evaluation rather than a toothpaste switch, because the underlying cause may be a cavity, a crack, or an infection that won’t resolve on its own.

A Practical Plan for Relief

If you’re dealing with sensitivity right now, a reasonable approach looks like this: start with a desensitizing toothpaste containing either 5% potassium nitrate or stannous fluoride and use it consistently for a month. Switch to a soft-bristled toothbrush if you haven’t already. Cut back on the most acidic drinks in your routine, or at least rinse with water after consuming them. If you grind your teeth, ask about a night guard at your next dental visit.

Most people see noticeable improvement within two to six weeks with these changes alone. If sensitivity persists after that, a professional fluoride varnish or desensitizer application is the logical next step, and your dentist can rule out any deeper issues at the same time.
