Skin that looks pale, bluish, or shiny on your feet, wounds that heal slowly, or hair loss on your toes and lower legs also warrant attention.
Peripheral artery disease is diagnosed with a simple, painless test that compares blood pressure in your ankle to blood pressure in your arm. A normal ratio falls between 1.00 and 1.40. Values below 1.00 indicate some degree of artery narrowing, and values below 0.40 indicate severe disease. The test takes a few minutes and can be done in a primary care office. If you have diabetes, smoke, or have a family history of heart disease, the risk is higher and the screening is more relevant.
A Note on Hydration
You’ll often see advice that drinking more water improves circulation by “thinning” the blood. The logic sounds reasonable: thinner blood should flow more easily.
