A confidence interval gets wider when you raise the confidence level, decrease the sample size, or work with data that has more variability. Those are the three levers that control interval width, and each one involves a trade-off between how certain you want to be and how precise your estimate ends up being.
Most people searching this want to understand why a confidence interval changes size and which factors they can actually control. Here’s how each one works.
The Formula Behind the Width
A confidence interval is built from a simple structure: your sample’s average, plus or minus a margin of error. That margin of error has three components multiplied together:
- A critical value (often called a z-score or t-value) that reflects your chosen confidence level
- The standard deviation of your data, which measures how spread out individual values are
- The inverse of the square root of your sample size, which shrinks the margin as you collect more data
Written out, the confidence interval equals the sample mean plus or minus the critical value times the standard deviation divided by the square root of n (your sample size). Every method for increasing a confidence interval works by changing one of these three pieces.
Raise the Confidence Level
The most direct way to widen a confidence interval is to increase your confidence level. The three most common levels use these critical values: 90% confidence uses 1.645, 95% uses 1.96, and 99% uses 2.575. Since that critical value gets multiplied into the margin of error, jumping from 95% to 99% increases the interval’s width by about 31%.
This is the classic trade-off in statistics. A 99% confidence interval captures the true value more reliably than a 95% interval, but the range of plausible values becomes much broader. If a 95% interval tells you a measurement falls between 40 and 60, the 99% interval for the same data might stretch from 36 to 64. You’re more confident, but less precise. Neither answer is wrong. The right choice depends on how costly it would be to miss the true value versus how useful a narrow range is for your decision.
Reduce the Sample Size
Collecting fewer data points widens the interval. The sample size sits under a square root sign in the denominator of the formula, which means this relationship isn’t linear. Cutting your sample from 400 to 100 doesn’t double the margin of error, it quadruples the effect under the square root (from 20 down to 10), doubling the margin. Going the other direction, you’d need to quadruple your sample size to cut the margin of error in half.
In practice, you rarely want a wider interval from a smaller sample. But understanding this relationship matters when you’re designing a study or survey and need to know how many observations will give you an interval narrow enough to be useful. If your current interval is too tight for the confidence level you need, collecting less data is technically one path to a wider interval, though it comes at the cost of reliability.
Work With More Variable Data
The standard deviation of your data feeds directly into the margin of error. When individual measurements are spread far from the average, the confidence interval widens because there’s more uncertainty about where the true population value sits.
You don’t usually choose to increase variability on purpose, but several things can cause it: measuring a more diverse population, using less precise instruments, or including data from different conditions or time periods. If you’re comparing two datasets and one produces a wider confidence interval, higher variability in the raw data is often the reason, even when the sample sizes and confidence levels are identical.
Reducing variability (through more controlled measurement procedures, for example) is one of the most effective ways to narrow an interval without changing the confidence level or collecting more data.
Small Samples Widen Intervals Further
When your sample has fewer than about 30 observations and you don’t know the true population standard deviation (which is almost always the case), the calculation switches from using the standard normal distribution to something called the t-distribution. The t-distribution produces larger critical values, which makes the interval wider still.
The difference can be substantial. For a 95% confidence interval, the normal distribution uses a critical value of 1.96. But with only 6 data points (5 degrees of freedom), the t-distribution bumps that value up to 2.57. That’s a 31% increase in the margin of error from the critical value alone, on top of whatever widening you already get from having a small sample in the denominator.
As sample size grows, the t-distribution converges toward the normal distribution. By the time you have 30 or more observations, the two are nearly identical and the practical difference disappears.
The Precision vs. Confidence Trade-Off
A wider interval isn’t inherently better or worse. It represents a choice about how much uncertainty you’re willing to accept. Wider intervals do contain the true value more often. Research in statistical theory has shown that when you sort confidence intervals into “wide” and “narrow” groups, the wide ones contain the true value more than 95% of the time (at the 95% level), while narrow ones contain it less often. Width and reliability genuinely go together.
But an interval so wide it includes every plausible answer isn’t useful for making decisions. If a poll tells you a candidate’s support is somewhere between 20% and 80%, you haven’t learned much. The goal in most real-world applications is to pick a confidence level appropriate for the stakes involved, then collect enough data with enough precision to make the resulting interval narrow enough to act on.
To summarize the three controls: raising the confidence level increases the critical value and directly widens the interval. Decreasing the sample size increases the standard error and widens it. And higher variability in the underlying data increases the standard deviation, which also widens it. All three multiply together, so changes in more than one factor at the same time compound each other’s effects.
