Cold, numb, or tingling hands are almost always a sign that blood flow to your fingers has been reduced. The good news is that several practical strategies can restore and improve that circulation, from simple movement techniques to dietary changes. Some work in seconds, others build better blood flow over weeks.
Why Your Hands Lose Blood Flow
Your body controls blood flow to your hands through tiny muscles wrapped around your blood vessels. When these muscles tighten, the space inside the vessel shrinks, and less blood reaches your fingers. - Timing: submerge your whole hand in warm water for one minute, then switch immediately to cold water for 30 seconds. Repeat this rotation four to five times per session.
- Finish with warm water unless your hand feels inflamed, in which case finish with cold.
For the best results, repeat this three to four times per day. You’ll notice increased warmth and color in your hands immediately after a session. Over time, regular contrast bathing can train your blood vessels to respond more effectively on their own.
