You can’t replicate that with food alone, but you can meaningfully increase and sustain your body’s GLP-1 pulses throughout the day by changing what, when, and how you eat.

GLP-1 is produced by L-cells, which line the lower part of your small intestine and your colon. These cells act like nutrient sensors. Specific amino acids including phenylalanine, tryptophan, arginine, and glutamine activate a calcium-sensing receptor on L-cells that directly stimulates GLP-1 secretion. Arginine and glutamine also boost GLP-1 through additional energy-sensing pathways in the cell.
The timing matters as much as the amount. In a study of people with type 2 diabetes, consuming roughly 15 grams of whey protein in a small liquid shot 10 minutes before each main meal elevated GLP-1 above baseline levels for approximately 3 hours after the meal. Over a 7-day free-living period, this simple pre-meal protein strategy improved the amount of time participants spent in a healthy blood sugar range. You don’t need a special supplement for this. Akkermansia muciniphila, a bacterium that thrives in a healthy gut lining, produces a protein called P9 that binds to receptors on L-cells and triggers GLP-1 release. In mouse studies, oral administration of this protein for 8 weeks reduced body weight gain and fat accumulation while increasing the intestinal expression of GLP-1’s precursor molecule. Akkermansia feeds on the mucus lining of your gut, and a diverse, fiber-rich diet helps maintain that lining. Probiotic supplements containing Akkermansia muciniphila are now commercially available, though the clinical evidence in humans is still developing.
Get Enough Sleep
