How to Keep Mosquitoes from Biting You: What Actually Works

The most effective way to keep mosquitoes from biting you is combining a proven repellent on your skin with physical barriers like long clothing or screens. No single method is perfect, but layering a few strategies together can reduce bites dramatically. Here’s what actually works, what doesn’t, and why mosquitoes target some people more than others.

Why Mosquitoes Pick You Over Someone Else

Mosquitoes find you through a sequence of cues. First, they detect the carbon dioxide you exhale from up to 50 feet away. As they get closer, they zero in on body heat, moisture, and the chemical cocktail your skin gives off. Research from the National Institutes of Health found that the most attractive people to mosquitoes had skin heavily enriched with carboxylic acids, a type of fatty acid produced by skin bacteria. Everyone’s skin microbiome is different, which is why mosquitoes genuinely do prefer some people over others.

Color matters too. After detecting CO2, mosquitoes are drawn to dark, high-contrast objects. Research published in the Journal of Experimental Biology found that mosquitoes strongly prefer red and black, and generally favor longer-wavelength colors (oranges and reds) over shorter wavelengths like greens and blues. Without a CO2 trigger, they mostly ignore visual cues altogether, so color alone won’t save you. But wearing light-colored clothing removes one more signal from the equation.

Repellents That Actually Work

The CDC recognizes several active ingredients as effective mosquito repellents: DEET, picaridin, IR3535, and oil of lemon eucalyptus (OLE). All of them work when applied correctly, and the differences mostly come down to how long they last and how they feel on your skin.

Concentration matters more than brand. Products with less than 10% active ingredient typically offer only one to two hours of protection. Higher concentrations last longer, but DEET’s effectiveness peaks at around 50%, so going above that doesn’t buy you extra time. A product with 25% to 30% DEET or picaridin covers most outdoor situations comfortably, providing several hours of protection per application.

Oil of lemon eucalyptus is the strongest plant-based option. Its active compound, PMD, has performed comparably to DEET in laboratory testing, showing no significant difference in repellency at time points from 30 minutes out to six hours. It’s a solid choice if you prefer something plant-derived, though it does need reapplication more frequently at lower concentrations. One important note: OLE should not be used on children under three years old.

What You Eat Won’t Help

Vitamin B1 (thiamine) supplements, garlic capsules, and brewer’s yeast are widely recommended online as natural bite prevention. None of them work. A comprehensive scoping review in the Bulletin of Entomological Research examined the entire body of evidence and concluded that thiamine does not repel biting insects of any species, in any dose, by any route of administration, whether topical, oral, or transdermal. The FDA reached the same conclusion back in 1985, ruling that all oral insect repellents, including thiamine, are “not generally recognized as safe and effective.” Entomologists have been in consensus on this for decades. Garlic and brewer’s yeast fare no better in controlled testing.

Permethrin-Treated Clothing

Treating your clothes with permethrin is one of the most underused strategies available. Permethrin is an insecticide that bonds to fabric fibers and kills or repels mosquitoes on contact. It doesn’t go on your skin; it stays on your clothing. In one study, people wearing permethrin-treated long sleeves and long pants received 91% fewer mosquito bites compared to identical untreated clothing. Even treated short sleeves and shorts cut bites by 49%.

Factory-treated garments (sold as ready-to-wear by brands like Insect Shield) remain effective for up to 70 washes. If you spray-treat clothing yourself, expect about six washes of protection before you need to reapply. For camping trips, hiking, or evenings in your backyard, treated clothing paired with a skin repellent on exposed areas is one of the most reliable combinations you can use.

Fans and Airflow

Mosquitoes are weak fliers. They struggle in winds exceeding 10 to 12 miles per hour, which is roughly the output of a standard box fan or oscillating pedestal fan on medium speed. Placing a fan near your seating area on a porch or patio creates a zone of turbulence mosquitoes can’t navigate well. It also disperses the CO2 plume and body odors that guide them to you in the first place. A fan won’t create a perfect shield, but it’s a simple, chemical-free way to meaningfully reduce bites when you’re sitting in one spot.

Screens, Nets, and Physical Barriers

Standard window and door screens with 18 to 20 mesh (18 to 20 holes per linear inch) block mosquitoes effectively while still allowing good airflow. A 20-mesh screen has 400 openings per square inch, small enough that common mosquito species can’t squeeze through. If your screens have tears or gaps around the frame, those are the entry points worth fixing first.

Bed nets remain one of the most effective tools for sleeping protection, especially in areas with malaria or dengue. Nets treated with insecticide provide both a physical barrier and a chemical one, killing mosquitoes that land on the fabric.

Reducing Mosquitoes Around Your Home

Mosquitoes breed in standing water, and they don’t need much. A bottle cap’s worth of water can support a batch of eggs. Walk your yard weekly and dump anything that collects rainwater: saucers under flower pots, clogged gutters, old tires, birdbaths, kids’ toys, and tarps with pooled water. Birdbaths and pet bowls should be refreshed every few days. Mosquito larvae take about a week to develop, so breaking that cycle consistently makes a real difference in your local population.

For broader area coverage, spatial repellent devices that emit metofluthrin (a vaporized insecticide) can protect a small zone around a patio or porch. These clip-on or tabletop devices work best in calm air and enclosed spaces. In field trials, one emanator covered roughly 100 to 170 square feet of indoor space. Outdoors, wind reduces their effectiveness, so they work best as a supplement to personal repellent rather than a replacement.

Putting It All Together

The people who get bitten least aren’t relying on any single trick. They’re layering. A practical approach for a mosquito-heavy evening outdoors looks like this:

  • Clothing: Long sleeves and pants in light colors, ideally treated with permethrin.
  • Skin repellent: DEET, picaridin, or OLE on all exposed skin, reapplied based on concentration and activity level.
  • Environment: A fan pointed at your seating area, standing water eliminated from the yard.
  • Timing awareness: Many common mosquito species are most active at dawn and dusk. Planning around those windows helps, though some species bite all day.

Apply sunscreen first if you’re using both, then repellent on top. Repellent mixed into sunscreen products tends to underperform compared to separate layers. When you go inside, wash treated skin with soap and water.
