The most effective way to keep sand fleas away is to use an EPA-registered insect repellent containing DEET, picaridin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus, and to cover exposed skin when spending time on sandy beaches or tropical shorelines. A few additional precautions, like timing your beach visits and washing up afterward, can further reduce your risk of bites.
Before diving into prevention, it helps to clarify what people mean by “sand fleas.” The term gets used loosely. In many coastal areas, it refers to biting midges (tiny flies also called no-see-ums) or small crustaceans that nip at your ankles. In tropical and subtropical regions, it can mean Tunga penetrans, an actual flea that burrows into the skin of your feet. The prevention strategies overlap, but the stakes are different. Biting midges leave itchy welts that fade. A burrowing sand flea can cause a parasitic infection called tungiasis. This article covers how to protect yourself from both.
Choose the Right Repellent
EPA-registered insect repellents are proven to reduce bites from sand flies, fleas, biting midges, and other small arthropods. The CDC identifies five active ingredients that provide reasonably long-lasting protection:
- DEET is the most widely available and well-studied option. Protection time increases with concentration up to about 50%, after which higher percentages don’t add much benefit. A product with 25% to 30% DEET covers most people for several hours at the beach.
- Picaridin (sometimes labeled as icaridin outside the U.S.) works comparably to DEET without the greasy feel. A 20% concentration provides multi-hour protection.
- Oil of lemon eucalyptus (OLE) is the most effective plant-derived option. Look for products listing OLE or its synthetic version, PMD, as the active ingredient. Note that this is not the same as lemon eucalyptus essential oil.
- IR3535 is commonly found in European repellent brands and offers moderate protection.
- 2-undecanone is a newer option derived from wild tomato plants.
Products with less than 10% of any active ingredient typically protect for only one to two hours, so check the label before heading out. For biting midges specifically, look for repellents labeled for “flies,” “biting flies,” or “no-see-ums,” as these have been tested against that category of pest.
Apply repellent to all exposed skin, paying special attention to your feet, ankles, and lower legs, since sand fleas and midges stay close to the ground. Reapply after swimming or heavy sweating.
Time Your Beach Visits
Sand fleas and biting midges are most active during dawn and dusk, and they tend to be worse on calm, overcast days when there’s little wind to disrupt their flight. A steady breeze off the ocean naturally keeps biting midges away because they’re too small and light to fly against it. If you have flexibility, visit the beach during the middle of the day when the sun is high and wind is more likely.
Sand fleas are active year-round in warm climates, though their behavior shifts with temperature. In cooler weather, they tend to move further from the shoreline, which can make encounters less predictable. Warm, humid conditions after rain are prime time for bites.
Cover Up and Create Barriers
Physical barriers are your simplest defense. Wearing shoes or sandals on the beach dramatically lowers your risk of burrowing sand flea infections, since Tunga penetrans almost always enters through bare feet, typically between the toes or under toenails. Closed-toe shoes are ideal in tropical areas where tungiasis is common. Even flip-flops offer more protection than going barefoot.
If you’re sitting or lying on the beach, use a thick blanket or elevated chair rather than resting directly on the sand. Sand fleas can’t jump very high (most species reach only about 20 to 40 centimeters), so getting even a small distance off the ground helps. Lightweight long pants and socks provide additional protection for your lower legs during peak biting hours.
Wash Up After the Beach
Showering with soap after leaving the beach removes any larvae, eggs, or tiny organisms clinging to your skin. This is especially important if you’ve been walking barefoot in sandy areas. The World Health Organization identifies daily foot washing with soap as a key behavior for preventing tungiasis in regions where burrowing sand fleas are endemic. Pay close attention to the spaces between your toes and around your toenails.
Rinse and shake out towels, clothing, and shoes before bringing them indoors. Sand flea eggs are tiny and easily hitch a ride in damp fabric or sandy gear.
Protect Your Outdoor Space
If sand fleas are a problem around your home or rental property near the coast, a few environmental changes help reduce their numbers. Keep vegetation trimmed back, since overgrown areas near sand provide shaded habitat where fleas thrive. Sealing or covering dirt and sand floors (relevant in tropical settings) removes their breeding ground entirely. The WHO recommends floor sealing and insecticide spraying as part of comprehensive tungiasis control in affected communities.
For porches and patios, outdoor fans create enough airflow to keep biting midges away. Even a small box fan pointed at your seating area makes a noticeable difference on still evenings.
What to Watch for After a Bite
Regular sand flea or midge bites look like small red welts, often in clusters on your feet and lower legs. They itch intensely but typically resolve on their own within a few days. Cool compresses and over-the-counter anti-itch creams help manage the discomfort.
Burrowing sand flea infections are different. If you’ve been barefoot in a tropical area (Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, or sub-Saharan Africa) and notice a small dark spot on your foot that grows into a raised, white or yellowish nodule with a dark center, that’s a sign a flea has embedded in your skin. The lesion is usually painful rather than just itchy, and it tends to appear between the toes or near the toenails. This needs professional removal to avoid secondary infection.
