How to Kill Ticks on Skin, Clothing, Pets, and Yard

Ticks are surprisingly hard to kill. Their flat, tough bodies can survive being submerged in water, squeezed between fingers, and even run through a washing machine. But there are reliable methods that work, whether you’re dealing with a tick attached to your skin, ticks on your clothes, or an infestation in your yard.

How to Kill a Tick You Just Removed

After pulling a tick off your body with fine-tipped tweezers, your first instinct might be to crush it. Don’t. Crushing a tick with your bare fingers can expose you to whatever pathogens it’s carrying. Instead, the CDC recommends four disposal methods: drop it into rubbing alcohol, wrap it tightly in tape, flush it down the toilet, or seal it in a closed container. Rubbing alcohol kills ticks quickly and decisively. Tape works by trapping and suffocating them. Flushing eliminates the tick entirely.

If you want to save the tick for identification later (useful if you develop symptoms), place it in a sealed bag or small container with a piece of damp cotton. You can freeze it to kill it while preserving it for testing.

Why Water Alone Won’t Work

A common misconception is that you can drown a tick in a bath, sink, or shower. Ticks are remarkably resilient in water. In lab testing, nymphal ticks that sank to the bottom of a bath were able to regain normal movement shortly after being removed. Adults held in plain water at 41°C (about 106°F) for 20 minutes showed no loss of leg movement at all. Some nymphs were even observed climbing out of the water up the sides of a stainless steel surface.

Shower water pressure alone won’t remove an attached tick either. If a tick is on your body while you bathe, it can simply crawl upward to a non-submerged area. Hot, soapy water does impair ticks more than plain water, and higher temperatures sustained for longer periods can cause lasting damage, but a normal bath or shower is not a reliable killing method.

Using Your Dryer to Kill Ticks on Clothing

Your clothes dryer is one of the most effective tick-killing tools you already own. Tossing dry clothing into a dryer on high heat for just 6 minutes kills all adult and nymphal ticks. The key word is “dry.” If your clothes are wet from the washing machine first, it takes much longer: up to 55 minutes on high heat to kill all ticks, because the evaporating moisture keeps the temperature lower inside the drum.

The practical takeaway: when you come inside from a hike or yard work, toss your clothes directly into the dryer before washing them. Six minutes on high heat is enough. Then wash them normally afterward. This is far more reliable than the wash cycle itself, since ticks can survive a full wash, even in warm water.

Repellents That Keep Ticks Off You

DEET is the most widely recognized tick repellent for skin, but it’s not the only option. The EPA registers several active ingredients as effective skin-applied repellents: DEET, picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus, IR 3535, and 2-undecanone, among others. Picaridin is a popular alternative because it’s less greasy and odorless compared to DEET while offering comparable protection.

For clothing and gear, permethrin is in a class of its own. You apply it at a 0.5% concentration to pants, socks, boots, and backpacks, and it doesn’t just repel ticks, it kills them on contact. Permethrin-treated clothing remains effective through multiple wash cycles, though the exact number varies by product. You can buy pre-treated clothing or spray your own gear with permethrin products sold at outdoor retailers. Never apply permethrin directly to skin.

Reducing Ticks in Your Yard

If you’re finding ticks regularly in your own yard, there are two approaches: landscaping changes and chemical treatment.

Landscaping and Barriers

Ticks thrive in shady, moist areas with leaf litter and tall grass. They don’t fly or jump; they climb onto low vegetation and wait for a host to brush past. Creating a “tick-safe zone” around your home means eliminating the conditions they prefer. Keep grass mowed short, clear leaf litter, and move play structures and patios away from the tree line.

One of the most effective physical measures is a barrier of wood chips, mulch, or gravel at least three feet wide between your lawn and any wooded area. This dry border makes it harder for ticks to migrate into your yard and serves as a visible line reminding you where the higher-risk zone begins.

Chemical Yard Treatments

Professional or DIY yard sprays containing synthetic pyrethroids can dramatically reduce tick populations. In a controlled two-year study, properties treated with a pyrethroid-based acaricide had 63% fewer nymphal ticks overall compared to untreated properties. In the first year, nymphal tick density dropped by nearly 69%. These treatments can remain effective for many months, with one study noting reductions lasting up to 41 weeks after application.

Timing matters. The most important window for treatment is late spring through early summer, when nymphal ticks are most active. Nymphs are the life stage most likely to transmit Lyme disease and other infections because they’re tiny (about the size of a poppy seed), hard to spot, and peak during the months when people spend the most time outdoors.

Protecting Pets From Ticks

Dogs and cats bring ticks into your home, so treating your pets is part of any tick control strategy. Modern oral tick medications work by making the animal’s blood toxic to ticks. One widely studied oral treatment kills nearly 90% of ticks within 4 hours of the pet taking the medication, and reaches 100% effectiveness by 12 hours. Over a full 12-week dosing period, it maintains at least 98% tick-killing effectiveness within 12 hours of any new tick attaching.

Topical spot-on treatments and tick collars are also effective options. The right choice depends on your pet’s size, species, and health. Cats are especially sensitive to certain chemicals that are safe for dogs, so always use species-specific products.

Why Ticks Are So Hard to Kill

Ticks have evolved to be extraordinarily durable. Their exoskeletons are tough enough to resist being crushed underfoot on soft ground. They can survive freezing temperatures through the winter: studies show that more than 80% of nymphal blacklegged ticks survive overwinter conditions regardless of how harsh the season is. It takes sustained exposure to extreme cold, around negative 11°C (about 12°F), to kill cold-acclimated nymphs, and even then only with direct exposure for at least two hours. High humidity and contact with ice crystals in the soil make them more vulnerable, but in the insulating leaf litter where they typically shelter, most pull through just fine.

This resilience is exactly why half-measures like squishing, rinsing, or a quick soak don’t reliably work. The methods that do work all rely on one of three principles: sustained high heat, chemical toxicity, or complete physical containment. A dryer on high, rubbing alcohol, permethrin-treated clothing, or a strip of tape wrapped tight around the body will get the job done every time.
