How to Know How Fertile You Are: Signs and Tests

Your fertility isn’t a single number or a yes-or-no answer. It’s a combination of factors you can observe at home, track over time, and measure through specific blood tests. Some of these signs show up every month during your menstrual cycle, while others require a doctor’s order and give you a broader picture of your reproductive timeline.

What Your Cycle Tells You Each Month

The simplest fertility clues come from your own body during each menstrual cycle. Cervical mucus is one of the most reliable day-to-day indicators. In the days leading up to ovulation, discharge shifts from thick or pasty to clear, slippery, and stretchy, often compared to raw egg whites. That texture lasts about three to four days and signals your most fertile window, because sperm can travel more easily through thin, wet mucus to reach an egg.

If you’re not noticing these changes, it doesn’t necessarily mean something is wrong. Hormonal birth control, dehydration, and certain medications can all suppress mucus production. But consistently absent fertile-quality mucus over several cycles is worth bringing up with a doctor.

Cycle regularity itself is a signal. Periods that arrive roughly every 24 to 38 days suggest you’re ovulating regularly. Cycles that are consistently very short, very long, or unpredictable may indicate irregular or absent ovulation, which directly affects your ability to conceive in any given month.

Tracking Ovulation at Home

Two common at-home methods can help you pinpoint whether and when you ovulate: basal body temperature (BBT) charting and ovulation predictor kits that detect a hormone surge in your urine.

BBT charting involves taking your temperature every morning before getting out of bed. After ovulation, your resting temperature rises slightly (about 0.2 to 0.5°F) and stays elevated until your next period. The catch is that this shift only confirms ovulation after it’s already happened, so it’s better for understanding your pattern over several months than for timing intercourse in real time. It also misses ovulation more often than you might expect. In one study, about 20% of women who were confirmed to be ovulating through blood tests showed no detectable temperature shift at all.

Ovulation predictor kits (OPKs) detect the surge in luteinizing hormone that triggers egg release, typically giving you a 24- to 36-hour heads-up before ovulation. They’re more useful for timing purposes than BBT, though neither method tells you anything about your overall fertility potential. They confirm that ovulation is happening, which is an important piece of the puzzle, but not the whole picture.

Blood Tests That Measure Ovarian Reserve

If you want a deeper look at your fertility, specific blood tests can estimate your ovarian reserve, which is roughly how many eggs you have remaining. This doesn’t tell you whether those eggs are healthy, but it gives context for where you stand relative to your age.

The most commonly used test is AMH (anti-Müllerian hormone), a protein produced by the small follicles in your ovaries. It can be drawn on any day of your cycle. Average levels fall between 1.0 and 3.0 ng/mL, with anything below 1.0 considered low and levels around 0.4 considered severely low. AMH declines naturally with age. Typical values on the lower end of normal look roughly like this:

  • Age 25: around 3.0 ng/mL
  • Age 30: around 2.5 ng/mL
  • Age 35: around 1.5 ng/mL
  • Age 40: around 1.0 ng/mL
  • Age 45: around 0.5 ng/mL

A second test, FSH (follicle-stimulating hormone), is drawn on day 3 of your cycle. Your brain produces more FSH when your ovaries need extra stimulation to develop eggs, so a higher number can signal diminishing reserve. Levels below 9 are generally considered normal. Values between 9 and 11 suggest a fair but declining reserve. Your doctor will often check estradiol on the same day, because elevated estradiol can artificially suppress FSH and mask a problem. What you want to see is both numbers low on day 3.

These tests are useful, but they have limits. A normal AMH doesn’t guarantee you’ll conceive easily, and a low AMH doesn’t mean you can’t. They reflect egg quantity, not egg quality, and quality matters enormously, especially as you get older.

How Age Affects Your Odds

Age is the single most important factor in fertility, and its impact is steeper than most people realize. A healthy 30-year-old has about a 20% chance of conceiving in any given cycle. By 40, that drops to less than 5% per cycle. The decline accelerates after 35, driven largely by changes in egg quality that increase the likelihood of chromosomal abnormalities and early miscarriage.

This doesn’t mean conception after 35 or 40 is impossible. It means it takes longer on average, and the probability of needing medical assistance goes up. The American Society for Reproductive Medicine recommends that women under 35 try for 12 months before seeking a fertility evaluation, while women 35 and older should be evaluated after 6 months. For women over 40, earlier evaluation is often warranted.

Weight, Lifestyle, and Fertility

Body weight has a measurable effect on fertility for both women and men. Women with a BMI over 30 have lower fertility rates, and the effect compounds when both partners carry excess weight. Couples where both partners have a BMI over 35 experience about 60% lower fertility compared to couples where both are under 25. The mechanism works in both directions: being significantly underweight can also disrupt ovulation by affecting hormone production.

Beyond weight, several lifestyle factors influence your fertility in ways that are harder to quantify but well established. Smoking accelerates egg loss and brings menopause earlier. Heavy alcohol use disrupts ovulation. Chronic stress doesn’t “cause” infertility in a straightforward way, but it can delay ovulation and make cycles irregular. For men, heat exposure (from laptops, hot tubs, or tight clothing), smoking, and heavy drinking all reduce sperm quality.

The encouraging side of this is that many lifestyle factors are modifiable. Reaching a healthier weight, quitting smoking, and reducing alcohol intake can improve your odds meaningfully, sometimes within a few months.

Male Fertility Matters Too

Fertility assessments often focus on the person with ovaries, but male factor issues contribute to roughly half of all cases where couples struggle to conceive. A semen analysis is the standard test, measuring sperm count, motility (how well they swim), and morphology (their shape). It’s noninvasive and typically one of the first things ordered during a fertility workup.

Men don’t experience the same cliff-edge decline as women, but sperm quality does decrease with age, particularly after 40. DNA fragmentation in sperm increases, which can affect embryo development and miscarriage rates even when the egg is healthy.

Putting It All Together

No single test or symptom gives you a complete fertility picture. The most useful approach combines what you can observe at home (cycle regularity, cervical mucus changes, ovulation tracking) with clinical data (AMH, FSH, semen analysis) and an honest assessment of age and lifestyle factors. If you’re simply curious about where you stand, an AMH test and a few months of cycle tracking will give you a reasonable baseline.
