If you close your eyes and try to picture a red apple, and you see nothing at all, you may have aphantasia. It’s not a disease or a disorder. Aphantasia simply means your brain doesn’t form mental images as part of thinking or imagination. Most people who have it don’t realize anything is different until they learn, sometimes well into adulthood, that other people literally “see” pictures in their mind.
The tricky part is figuring out whether you truly can’t visualize or whether you visualize weakly and assume everyone else does too. Here’s how to tell the difference.
The Simplest Self-Test
Close your eyes and try to picture someone you know well, standing in front of you. Try to see their face, the color of their hair, what they’re wearing. Now honestly evaluate what happened in your mind. Most people experience something on a spectrum: some see a vivid, almost photograph-like image; others get a faint, flickering impression; and some see absolutely nothing while still “knowing” what the person looks like in an abstract, fact-based way.
That last experience is the hallmark of aphantasia. You can describe the person’s features from memory. You know their hair is brown. But there is no picture. You’re working with knowledge, not imagery. People with aphantasia often describe it as thinking “about” something rather than thinking “in” something.
The Vividness of Visual Imagery Questionnaire
The most widely used tool for measuring mental imagery is the Vividness of Visual Imagery Questionnaire, or VVIQ. It asks you to imagine a series of scenes, like a friend’s face, a rising sun, or a storefront you know well, and then rate how vivid the image is on a five-point scale:
- 1: Perfectly clear and as vivid as normal vision
- 2: Clear and reasonably vivid
- 3: Moderately clear and vivid
- 4: Vague and dim
- 5: No image at all. You only “know” that you are thinking of the object.
If you consistently rate yourself a 5 across most items, that’s a strong indicator of aphantasia. People who score mostly 4s likely have very weak imagery but not a complete absence of it. It’s worth noting that the VVIQ’s creator, psychologist David Marks, has stated that the questionnaire is not intended to be a clinical screening tool. There’s no official “cutoff score” that diagnoses you. It’s a self-report measure, and its value lies in helping you understand where you fall on the imagery spectrum.
Signs You Might Not Have Noticed
Many people with aphantasia don’t identify a single dramatic moment of realization. Instead, they recognize a pattern of experiences that suddenly makes sense once they have the word for it. Common signs include:
- Difficulty with faces: You may struggle to recall what someone looks like when they’re not in front of you, or have trouble recognizing people out of context. Research shows people with aphantasia tend to perform worse on facial recognition tasks.
- Flat autobiographical memory: You remember facts about your past (where you went on vacation, who was there) but can’t mentally replay the scene. Your memories feel like a list of things that happened rather than a movie you can rewatch. This overlaps with a related trait called severely deficient autobiographical memory, where people lack vivid first-person recollections of their own life despite functioning normally day to day.
- Counting sheep doesn’t work: Sleep techniques that rely on visualization, like imagining a peaceful beach, do nothing for you. Guided meditations that ask you to “picture” something feel pointless.
- Reading fiction differently: You may enjoy novels but never “see” the characters or settings. The story registers as concepts and emotions rather than a visual experience.
- Difficulty with visual search: Scanning a messy room to find a specific object can feel harder than it seems to be for other people.
It’s Not Always Just Vision
Aphantasia is most commonly discussed as a visual phenomenon, but mental imagery isn’t limited to sight. Some people can’t mentally “hear” a song, recall the taste of a food, or imagine the feeling of touching something. Research has identified distinct subtypes: some people have visual aphantasia only, meaning they can still imagine sounds, textures, or smells. Others have multi-sensory aphantasia, where conscious mental imagery is absent across all senses. There are even rarer profiles, like someone who can’t visualize at all but has perfectly intact auditory imagery, able to replay music in their head with no trouble.
If you’re testing yourself, don’t stop at pictures. Try to mentally hear a familiar song, imagine the smell of coffee, or recall the physical sensation of holding an ice cube. Your answers across all these senses give you a more complete picture of how your imagination works.
The Pupil Test: Objective Evidence
One of the most compelling pieces of evidence for aphantasia comes from a study published in eLife that measured something you can’t fake: pupil size. When most people imagine a bright scene, like staring at the sun, their pupils physically contract, just as they would if real light were entering the eye. Their brains treat the imagined brightness as partly real.
People with aphantasia showed no pupil change at all when asked to imagine bright or dark scenes. Their eyes responded normally to actual light and dilated with mental effort, proving they were engaged in the task. But the imagery-specific pupil response was completely absent. This was the first objective physiological confirmation that aphantasia reflects a genuine difference in how the brain processes imagery, not just a difference in how people describe their inner experience.
You can’t easily replicate this at home (it requires precise pupil tracking in controlled lighting), but knowing it exists can be reassuring if you’ve ever worried you’re just “bad at describing” what you see internally. The difference is measurable and real.
What About Dreams?
Here’s something that surprises many people: having aphantasia while awake doesn’t necessarily mean your dreams are blank. Research from the University of Exeter found that although people with aphantasia can’t visualize at will, they often dream visually. This seems contradictory, but it makes sense when you consider that voluntary imagery (deliberately picturing something) and involuntary imagery (what your brain produces during sleep) may rely on different neural pathways.
Some people with aphantasia do report less visual dreaming or dreams that feel more conceptual than cinematic. But if you dream in images and can’t visualize while awake, that doesn’t rule out aphantasia. It’s actually a common combination.
Degrees, Not a Binary
Aphantasia exists on a spectrum. Some people have zero voluntary imagery under any circumstances. Others get occasional involuntary flashes, brief images that pop up without effort but disappear the moment they try to hold onto them. Some people can’t visualize with their eyes closed but have faint imagery with eyes open. These variations are all real and recognized.
On the opposite end of the spectrum sits hyperphantasia, where imagery is so vivid it’s essentially indistinguishable from actually seeing something. Most people fall somewhere in the middle. Neuroscience research suggests the difference comes down to connection strengths between the brain’s cognitive control regions and its sensory processing areas. In people with aphantasia, the signals from higher-order thinking areas don’t activate the visual system the way they do in strong visualizers.
Born With It or Acquired Later
Most people with aphantasia have had it their entire lives. They never visualized and didn’t know it was unusual. But aphantasia can also develop after brain injury, stroke, or other neurological events. If you used to be able to picture things clearly and that ability disappeared, that’s acquired aphantasia, and it’s worth mentioning to a doctor since the sudden loss of a previously normal ability can signal something that needs evaluation.
For people who’ve had it from birth, aphantasia isn’t a medical problem that needs treatment. It’s a variation in cognitive style. People with lifelong aphantasia hold jobs that require creativity, navigate the world without difficulty, and develop compensatory strategies (relying on verbal descriptions, spatial reasoning, or factual memory) without necessarily realizing they’re doing it.
