Your body gives several reliable signals when you’re ovulating, from changes in cervical mucus to a slight rise in body temperature. Ovulation typically happens around day 14 of a 28-day cycle, but it varies widely from person to person. Learning to read these signs can help whether you’re trying to conceive or simply want to understand your cycle better.
Cervical Mucus Changes
The single most practical sign of approaching ovulation is a change in your cervical mucus. In the days leading up to ovulation, discharge shifts from thick, white, and sticky (like paste) to clear, slippery, and stretchy, resembling raw egg whites. This “egg white” mucus is your body’s way of creating a sperm-friendly environment. You can check by wiping with toilet paper or gently pressing discharge between two fingers to see if it stretches.
After ovulation passes, mucus returns to being thick and dry relatively quickly. Tracking this pattern over a few cycles gives you a reliable sense of when your fertile window opens each month. The transition from creamy, yogurt-like mucus to that slippery, stretchy texture is the key shift to watch for.
Ovulation Predictor Kits
Over-the-counter ovulation predictor kits (OPKs) detect the surge in luteinizing hormone (LH) that triggers egg release. Estrogen rises steadily in the first half of your cycle, and when it gets high enough, it causes a sudden spike in LH, usually around day 13. Ovulation follows 28 to 36 hours after that surge begins.
To use a kit, test once a day at roughly the same time. Unlike pregnancy tests, you’ll get better results testing later in the day rather than with your first morning urine. A positive result (often shown as a smiley face or a test line as dark as the control line) means you’re likely to ovulate within the next 36 hours. If you’re trying to conceive, the day of the positive result and the following day are your best window.
Basal Body Temperature
Your basal body temperature (BBT) is your temperature at complete rest, taken first thing in the morning before getting out of bed. After ovulation, progesterone causes a small but measurable rise, typically less than half a degree Fahrenheit. The increase can be as subtle as 0.4°F or as high as 1°F, depending on the person.
The catch with BBT tracking is that it confirms ovulation after the fact rather than predicting it. You need a thermometer accurate to one-tenth of a degree, and you need to take your temperature at the same time every morning before doing anything else. Over several cycles, you’ll see a pattern: temperatures cluster lower in the first half and shift higher in the second half. That sustained rise tells you ovulation occurred. Illness, poor sleep, and alcohol can all throw off individual readings, so it works best as a trend over time rather than a single data point.
Ovulation Pain
Some people feel a distinct twinge or cramp on one side of their lower abdomen around ovulation. This sensation, sometimes called mittelschmerz (German for “middle pain”), can range from a sharp, brief cramp lasting just a few minutes to a dull ache that lingers for up to 24 to 48 hours. The side may alternate month to month depending on which ovary releases the egg.
Not everyone experiences ovulation pain, and its absence doesn’t mean you’re not ovulating. But if you notice a predictable one-sided cramp mid-cycle, it’s a useful additional signal to pair with other tracking methods.
Breast Tenderness and Other Subtle Signs
After ovulation, rising progesterone can cause mild breast tenderness and swelling. This typically shows up in the luteal phase (the second half of your cycle, between ovulation and your period) and tends to be more noticeable in cycles where ovulation is strong and healthy. Studies comparing normal ovulatory cycles to cycles with weaker ovulation found that breast tenderness was significantly more intense and lasted longer when ovulation occurred normally, often persisting for around four to five days.
Other signs some people notice around ovulation include light spotting, a brief increase in sex drive, and mild bloating. These are less reliable on their own but can reinforce what you’re seeing from mucus, temperature, or OPK results.
Your Fertile Window
Understanding when you’re fertile matters as much as knowing when you ovulate. Sperm can survive inside the body for up to three to five days, while an egg survives only about 24 hours after release. That means you can conceive from sex that happens anywhere from five days before ovulation to one day after it. Your highest chance of pregnancy is when sperm are already waiting in the fallopian tubes at the moment the egg arrives.
In practice, the two to three days leading up to ovulation are the most fertile. Combining cervical mucus tracking with OPK testing gives you the best advance notice of this window. BBT tracking then confirms afterward that ovulation actually happened, which is helpful for identifying patterns cycle to cycle.
When Ovulation Signs Are Unreliable
Certain conditions can make ovulation signs harder to read or misleading. Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is one of the most common. PCOS causes higher-than-normal levels of androgens, which can suppress ovulation entirely or make it irregular and unpredictable. People with PCOS often have elevated baseline LH levels, which can produce confusing results on ovulation predictor kits.
Thyroid disorders, significant stress, rapid weight changes, and some medications can also disrupt ovulation or mask its signs. If your cycles are consistently shorter than 21 days, longer than 35 days, or highly irregular, you may not be ovulating every cycle. Irregular or absent periods are the most straightforward clue that something is interfering with normal ovulation.
Combining Methods for Accuracy
No single sign is perfectly reliable on its own. Cervical mucus gives you a few days of advance warning but requires practice to interpret. OPKs are more objective but only catch the LH surge, which doesn’t guarantee the egg actually releases. BBT confirms ovulation happened but only in retrospect. Ovulation pain is helpful if you experience it, but many people don’t.
The most effective approach is layering two or three methods together. Start with cervical mucus observation since it costs nothing and provides the earliest signal. Add OPK testing when mucus starts becoming wetter and more slippery. Track BBT if you want cycle-to-cycle confirmation. After two or three months of combined tracking, most people develop a clear picture of their personal ovulation pattern, including which day it typically falls on and which signs show up most consistently for them.
