The fastest way to lower a high blood sugar reading is to drink water and move your body. Plain water helps your kidneys flush excess glucose through urine, and even a short walk pulls sugar out of your bloodstream and into your muscles for fuel. For people with diabetes, current guidelines set the target range at 70 to 180 mg/dL for most of the day, with readings before meals ideally landing between 80 and 130 mg/dL and post-meal peaks staying below 180 mg/dL.
Whether you’re managing diabetes or just saw an unexpectedly high number on a glucose monitor, the strategies below work on the same basic biology: getting sugar out of your blood and into cells, slowing how fast sugar enters your blood in the first place, and keeping the hormones that regulate all of this working properly.

The American Diabetes Association recommends plain water as the best choice during hyperglycemia, noting that the body needs more fluids than usual to flush excess glucose. Sugar-free beverages also work, but water is the simplest option.
Use a Walk as Medicine
Physical activity is one of the most reliable ways to bring blood sugar down because contracting muscles pull glucose directly from your bloodstream, even without needing much insulin to do it. During and immediately after exercise, your muscle cells open extra glucose transporters on their surface, acting like doors that let sugar in. This effect is strongest in the first two hours after you stop moving, but the increased insulin sensitivity from a single session of moderate exercise, like a brisk walk or a bike ride, lasts up to 48 hours.
