What Alcohol Actually Does (and Why It’s a Poor Strategy)
Alcohol lowers inhibitions by disrupting the prefrontal cortex’s internal communication. Ethanol reduces the excitability of neurons in the orbitofrontal cortex, a region involved in evaluating social consequences. It also interferes with the fast-acting inhibitory circuits that normally keep neural activity tightly regulated, creating a kind of neurological “disinhibition” where the braking signals between neurons become unreliable.
