How to Make Feet Stop Sweating: Treatments That Work

Sweaty feet are incredibly common, and they’re driven by biology that’s hard to override completely. Your feet contain more sweat glands per square centimeter than almost any other part of your body, drawing from the 2 to 5 million eccrine glands spread across your skin. The good news: a combination of the right products, footwear choices, and, if needed, medical treatments can dramatically reduce how much your feet sweat and eliminate the odor and discomfort that come with it.

Why Feet Sweat So Much

Unlike sweating on your back or chest, which is mostly about cooling down, foot sweating is primarily triggered by emotional and sensory stimulation from the brain. Stress, anxiety, and even concentration can activate the sweat glands on your soles. This is why your feet can be drenched even when you’re sitting in an air-conditioned room. It also explains why the problem only happens during waking hours. People with excessively sweaty feet don’t sweat through their soles while sleeping.

Shoes make everything worse. Your feet are sealed inside layers of material for most of the day, trapping moisture against the skin. That warm, wet environment feeds bacteria, which produce the odor most people associate with sweaty feet. So the strategy is twofold: reduce the sweat itself and manage the moisture that does occur.

Start With Antiperspirant

The same active ingredient in underarm antiperspirant works on feet, but you’ll likely need a stronger concentration. Over-the-counter foot antiperspirants typically contain 10% to 15% aluminum chloride. For feet, though, prescription-strength formulas go much higher. Dermatologists commonly prescribe 20% aluminum chloride hexahydrate, and compounded formulations for the palms and soles can range from 30% to 40%.

Apply antiperspirant to clean, completely dry feet at night before bed. Since foot sweating stops during sleep, the aluminum salts have time to form a temporary plug in the sweat ducts without being immediately washed away. In the morning, wash your feet normally. Most people notice a significant reduction within a week or two of nightly use, after which you can taper to two or three applications per week.

Higher concentrations can cause skin irritation, especially between the toes. If you notice stinging or peeling, try applying every other night or using a lower concentration until your skin adjusts.

Foot Powders and What’s in Them

Foot powder works differently from antiperspirant. Rather than blocking sweat, it absorbs moisture that’s already on the skin. Modern talc-free powders rely on cornstarch and tricalcium phosphate as their primary absorbers. Some also include sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) to neutralize odor and antimicrobial ingredients to slow bacterial growth.

Dust powder across your feet and between your toes before putting on socks. You can also shake some into your shoes. Powder won’t stop heavy sweating on its own, but it’s a useful layer of defense on top of antiperspirant, especially in warmer months. If you don’t have foot powder handy, plain cornstarch from the kitchen works as a basic absorber in a pinch.

Socks and Shoes That Help

Cotton socks are one of the worst choices for sweaty feet. Cotton absorbs moisture but holds it against your skin, keeping your feet damp all day. Two better options exist.

  • Merino wool socks allow sweat to escape through the fibers, keeping your skin drier than cotton or synthetics. Merino also has natural antibacterial properties that resist odor buildup, making it especially useful if you can’t change socks during the day.
  • Synthetic moisture-wicking socks made from polyester, nylon, or acrylic blends pull sweat away from the skin and spread it across a larger surface area so it evaporates faster. They also reduce friction, which helps prevent blisters on damp feet.

If your sweating is moderate to heavy, carry a second pair of socks and change them midday. It sounds simple, but swapping into dry socks at lunch can make the afternoon dramatically more comfortable.

For shoes, choose breathable materials like leather or mesh over rubber and plastic. Avoid wearing the same pair two days in a row. Give shoes at least 24 hours to dry out fully between wears. Removable insoles that you can pull out and air-dry overnight also help.

Iontophoresis for Persistent Sweating

If daily antiperspirant and sock changes aren’t enough, iontophoresis is a non-invasive treatment that uses a low electrical current passed through water to reduce sweat gland activity. You place your feet in shallow trays of water while the device runs for about 20 minutes per session.

A study in the Journal of the American Podiatric Medical Association found that after a four-week course of seven sessions, about 37% of participants saw an 80% reduction in sweat production, and another 33% saw a 50% reduction. Roughly 30% didn’t improve. The initial treatment schedule is intensive: three sessions in the first week, two in the second, then once a week for the third and fourth weeks. After that, maintenance sessions every few weeks keep the results going.

You can buy home iontophoresis devices, which makes long-term use more practical. They typically cost a few hundred dollars, and some insurance plans cover them with a prescription.

Botox Injections

Botox blocks the nerve signals that tell sweat glands to activate. When injected into the soles of the feet, it can nearly eliminate sweating in the treated area. The effects last about three to four months before gradually wearing off, at which point sweating returns and you’d need another round of injections.

The main drawback is pain. The soles of the feet are densely packed with nerve endings, so the injections are significantly more uncomfortable than Botox in other areas. Most practitioners use nerve blocks or topical numbing agents to manage this. Cost is the other consideration: treatments typically run several hundred dollars per session and may or may not be covered by insurance, depending on whether you have a formal diagnosis of hyperhidrosis.

Oral Medications

For people whose foot sweating is part of a broader pattern of excessive sweating across multiple body areas, doctors sometimes prescribe anticholinergic medications. These pills work by blocking the chemical messenger that activates sweat glands throughout the body. The trade-off is that they reduce all sweating, not just on your feet, and they come with systemic side effects. Dry mouth is the most common complaint, and some people experience blurred vision, constipation, or difficulty urinating.

Oral medications are generally a last resort for foot-specific sweating because topical and device-based treatments target the problem area without affecting the rest of your body.

Daily Habits That Add Up

Beyond products and treatments, a few consistent habits can make a noticeable difference. Wash your feet with antibacterial soap daily, not just letting soapy water from the shower run over them, but actually scrubbing the soles and between the toes. Dry them thoroughly before putting on socks. Moisture left between the toes after a shower is a head start your sweat glands don’t need.

Going barefoot or wearing open sandals when possible gives your feet time to air out and lets sweat evaporate naturally. If you work in an environment where closed shoes are required all day, even 15 minutes barefoot when you get home helps reset the moisture cycle. Rotating between two or three pairs of work shoes, rather than wearing the same pair daily, prevents bacterial colonies from establishing a permanent home in damp insoles.
