Fix Your Brushing Technique

Aggressive brushing is one of the top causes of both enamel loss and gum recession, so changing how you brush can stop sensitivity from getting worse. The American Dental Association recommends holding your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle to the gum line and using short, gentle back-and-forth strokes. After cleaning along the gum line, sweep the brush from the gum toward the biting edge of the tooth. Resin-based desensitizers work like a thin bonding layer painted over exposed dentin. After cleaning and drying the tooth, your dentist applies the resin with a micro-brush, then hardens it with a curing light. This creates a physical seal over the tubules that lasts longer than varnish alone.

Laser treatment uses low-power light energy directed at the sensitive area to alter the dentin surface and reduce fluid movement through the tubes. It’s painless and quick. Some dentists combine laser treatment with a resin sealant for a longer-lasting result.

For severe gum recession that has left large areas of root exposed, a gum graft (where tissue is moved to cover the exposed root) may be the most effective long-term solution. This is a more involved procedure, but it addresses the root cause rather than just managing symptoms.

Building a Daily Routine That Works

Reducing sensitivity is less about one magic product and more about stacking several small changes together. A practical daily approach looks like this: brush twice a day with a sensitivity toothpaste using a soft brush and gentle technique, wait 30 minutes after acidic meals before brushing, rinse with water after coffee or citrus, and wear a night guard if you grind. Give your sensitivity toothpaste at least two full weeks of consistent use before judging whether it’s working.

If your sensitivity came on suddenly, affects only one tooth, or is accompanied by spontaneous throbbing pain, that pattern points more toward a cavity, crack, or infection than general hypersensitivity.
