Most eye pain resolves on its own or with simple home care, but the right approach depends entirely on what’s causing it. A scratched cornea, dry eyes, screen fatigue, and a stye all hurt differently and need different treatments. Identifying your type of pain is the fastest path to relief.
Identify What Kind of Pain You Have
Eye pain generally falls into two categories: surface-level irritation and deeper, aching pain. Surface pain feels like burning, stinging, grittiness, or the sensation that something is stuck in your eye. It’s typically caused by dryness, a scratch, an irritant, or an infection like pink eye. Deeper pain, often described as throbbing or boring, comes from inside or behind the eye and can signal conditions like inflammation of the eye’s inner structures or elevated eye pressure.
Where the pain is, how it started, and what makes it worse all matter. Pain that worsens when you move your eyes suggests inflammation of the outer wall of the eye or, less commonly, the optic nerve. Pain concentrated at the eyelid edge is more likely a stye. Vague, bilateral burning that comes and goes throughout the day points toward dry eye. A sharp, stabbing sensation after getting poked or after debris blew into your eye is probably a corneal abrasion.
Quick Relief for Dry, Tired Eyes
Dry eye syndrome is one of the most common reasons eyes hurt, and it produces a burning, gritty discomfort that tends to affect both eyes. Over-the-counter lubricating drops (artificial tears) are the first line of relief. If your eyes feel dry and irritated most of the time, look for drops labeled “hypotonic” or “hypoosmolar,” which help restore your natural tear balance. If your tears seem to evaporate quickly, oil-based or lipid-based lubricant drops help thicken the tear film.
One important warning: avoid drops marketed specifically to “get the red out.” These contain ingredients like tetrahydrozoline and naphazoline, which constrict blood vessels temporarily but can actually worsen redness and irritation with repeated use. Stick with plain lubricating drops.
Low humidity, air conditioning, and heating vents blowing directly on your face all accelerate tear evaporation. A humidifier in your workspace or bedroom, and repositioning your chair away from air vents, can make a noticeable difference over time.
Relieving Screen-Related Eye Strain
If your eye pain kicks in after hours of computer or phone use, digital eye strain is the likely culprit. The fix is behavioral more than medical. The 20-20-20 rule is the simplest strategy: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds. This relaxes the focusing muscles inside your eye that tense up during close-up screen work.
People blink significantly less while staring at screens, which dries out the eye surface. Make a conscious effort to blink more often, and keep artificial tears nearby for when dryness sets in. Glare from overhead fluorescent lights or a window behind your screen forces your eyes to work harder. Close blinds, dim overhead lights, use a desk lamp for reading, or place an anti-glare cover on your monitor. If you wear glasses and spend most of your day on a computer, lenses designed specifically for screen distance can reduce strain considerably.
How to Treat a Stye or Eyelid Bump
A stye appears at the edge of your eyelid, usually around an infected eyelash root, and it hurts. It can swell enough to puff up the entire lid. A chalazion looks similar but forms farther back on the lid from a clogged oil gland and is usually painless or only mildly tender.
The treatment for both is the same at home: soak a clean washcloth in hot water and hold it against your closed eyelid for 10 to 15 minutes, three to five times a day. Re-soak the cloth frequently to keep it warm. For a chalazion, gently massage around the bump with a clean finger after applying the compress to help the blocked gland drain. Never squeeze or pop either one, as this can spread infection into the surrounding tissue. Skip contact lenses and eye makeup until it clears up. Most styes resolve within a week. A chalazion can take longer, sometimes several weeks, but warm compresses speed the process.
What to Do for a Scratched Eye
Corneal abrasions happen easily: a fingernail, a tree branch, dust, or a contact lens can all scratch the clear front surface of your eye. The pain is immediate and sharp, often with tearing, redness, and sensitivity to light. The good news is that this part of the eye heals remarkably fast. Minor scratches typically feel significantly better within 24 to 48 hours because the corneal cells reproduce quickly. Larger abrasions take a few more days but still heal well in most cases.
If you suspect a scratch, avoid rubbing the eye, which can make it worse. Blinking and tearing are your eye’s natural flushing mechanisms. You can rinse gently with clean water or saline. A doctor visit is worthwhile for any corneal abrasion because antibiotic drops or ointment are typically prescribed to prevent infection during healing, and that’s not something you can handle with over-the-counter products alone.
Flushing Out Chemicals or Debris
If a chemical, cleaning product, or irritating substance gets in your eye, flush it immediately. Speed matters more than technique here. Hold your eye open under a gentle stream of clean, lukewarm water or saline for at least 15 to 20 minutes. Let the water flow across the entire eye surface, not directly at the center. Pull your upper and lower lids away from the eye periodically to rinse underneath them, where chemicals can linger.
For chemical splashes, also rinse the skin around your eye and eyelids to remove any residue. Alkaline substances (like oven cleaners or drain openers) are particularly dangerous and may require much longer flushing. After rinsing, seek medical attention, even if the pain subsides. Chemicals can continue to leach out of eye tissue and cause delayed damage that isn’t immediately obvious.
For a loose eyelash, speck of dirt, or similar debris, try blinking rapidly or pulling your upper lid over your lower lid to let your lashes sweep the particle out. Rinsing with clean water or saline usually does the trick. If you can see the object but can’t dislodge it, or if pain persists after flushing, don’t try to remove it yourself with tweezers or cotton swabs.
When to Use Warm vs. Cold Compresses
Warm compresses work best for styes, chalazia, and dry eyes caused by blocked oil glands. The goal is to raise the eyelid temperature to about 40°C (104°F) for at least five minutes, which softens the oily secretions inside the glands and helps them flow freely again. A clean washcloth soaked in hot water works well. Re-soak it every couple of minutes as it cools.
Cold compresses are better for swelling from an injury, allergic reactions, or general puffiness. A bag of frozen peas wrapped in a thin cloth, or a cold pack, applied for 10 to 15 minutes reduces inflammation. Don’t press hard on the eye, and never place ice directly on the skin.
Signs That Need Immediate Attention
Most eye pain is minor, but certain combinations of symptoms signal something more serious. Severe pain paired with a headache, fever, or extreme light sensitivity can indicate a dangerous infection or inflammation inside the eye. Sudden vision changes, seeing halos around lights, or nausea and vomiting alongside eye pain may point to a rapid spike in eye pressure, which can permanently damage your optic nerve if untreated.
Other red flags include blood or pus draining from the eye, inability to open the eye or move it normally, visible swelling in or around the eye socket, and any pain following a chemical splash or penetrating injury. These situations warrant emergency care, not a wait-and-see approach.
Pain that gets progressively worse over days rather than better, pain that worsens specifically with eye movement, or a deep ache behind one eye that doesn’t respond to any home treatment also deserves a professional evaluation. Conditions like scleritis (inflammation of the eye’s outer wall) and optic neuritis (inflammation of the optic nerve) can start subtly but require targeted treatment to prevent lasting damage.
