Making your own electrolyte drink takes about two minutes and four or five ingredients you probably already have in your kitchen. The basic formula is simple: water, salt, a source of sugar, and something acidic for flavor. From there, you can adjust the ratios depending on whether you’re rehydrating after exercise, recovering from illness, or supplementing during a low-carb diet.
The Basic Recipe
Start with this foundation and adjust to taste:

The sugar isn’t just for taste. Your small intestine absorbs water and sodium faster when glucose is present because the three are co-transported together. Too much sugar, though, slows things down. You want just enough to help absorption without turning the drink into juice. Two tablespoons per 500 ml keeps the concentration below that of your blood (what’s called a hypotonic solution, under 280 mOsm/L), which creates a favorable gradient that pulls water from your gut into your bloodstream faster than plain water alone.
Citrus juice adds a small amount of potassium and makes the drink palatable enough that you’ll actually finish it. If you skip the flavor component, you’re left with slightly sweet salt water, and most people won’t drink enough of that to matter.
A Coconut Water Version
Coconut water is already a natural electrolyte source. One cup delivers roughly 600 mg of potassium (more than a banana) and about 252 mg of sodium. The catch is that it’s high in potassium but relatively low in sodium compared to what you lose in sweat, so you still need to add salt.
- 2 cups coconut water
- ⅛ to ¼ teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon honey or a squeeze of citrus (optional, for taste)
This version works well for lighter activity or general hydration on hot days. The potassium content makes it a better post-workout option than the basic recipe if you’ve been sweating heavily for over an hour, since longer efforts deplete potassium stores more significantly.
A Sugar-Free Version for Keto or Fasting
If you’re on a ketogenic diet or fasting, you don’t want the sugar. Low-carb diets also increase electrolyte needs because your kidneys excrete more sodium when insulin levels are low. People following keto often need 4 to 6 grams of sodium per day, 3.5 to 5 grams of potassium, and 400 to 600 mg of magnesium, well above what most people get from food alone.

Choosing Your Sweetener
Table sugar, honey, and maple syrup all work. The differences are minor but worth knowing. Table sugar dissolves cleanly and is the cheapest option. Honey dissolves a bit slower in cold water but adds trace minerals. Maple syrup is notably high in manganese and has about half the sugar content of coconut water per serving, making it a good middle ground if you want some sweetness with fewer carbohydrates.
Agave nectar is another option, but it’s high in fructose, which your gut absorbs through a different (and slower) pathway than glucose. For rapid rehydration, glucose-based sweeteners work better. If you’re using agave, you’re making a flavored drink more than an optimized rehydration tool.

After Exercise
Heavier sweating means more sodium loss. If you’re exercising for over an hour, especially in heat, bump the salt up to ½ teaspoon per 500 ml. You can also add a splash of orange juice for extra potassium and natural sugar. The goal is a drink that tastes mildly salty but not unpleasant. If it tastes good, your body probably needs what’s in it.
During Stomach Illness
Vomiting and diarrhea drain electrolytes fast. The World Health Organization’s oral rehydration formula uses a precise ratio: about ½ teaspoon of salt and 6 teaspoons of sugar per liter of water. That’s more sugar than the exercise version because the priority is maximizing water absorption through a compromised gut. For children especially, starting an electrolyte solution at the first signs of illness is better than waiting until dehydration sets in.
Keep in mind that mild to moderate dehydration responds well to drinking more fluids at home. But if diarrhea has lasted 24 hours or more, if you can’t keep fluids down, or if you notice confusion, unusual sleepiness, or a fever above 102°F, that’s beyond what a homemade drink can fix.
For Everyday Hydration
If you’re not exercising hard or sick, you probably don’t need a full-strength electrolyte drink. Cut the salt in half and reduce the sugar. Many people find that just adding a pinch of salt and a squeeze of lemon to their water bottle helps them drink more throughout the day, which is half the battle.
Storage and Shelf Life
Homemade electrolyte drinks don’t contain preservatives, so they spoil faster than you might expect. At room temperature, use or discard the drink within 12 hours. Refrigerated, it lasts up to 24 hours. Making a fresh batch daily is the safest approach, and since it takes under two minutes, there’s little reason to make large quantities in advance.
If you want to streamline the process, you can pre-mix the dry ingredients (salt, sugar, lite salt) in a jar and keep it on your counter. Label it with the amount of water to add per scoop. This way you’re always one stir away from a fresh drink without measuring each time.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
The most frequent error is adding too much sugar. A drink that’s more concentrated than your blood (hypertonic, above 300 mOsm/L) actually pulls water into your gut instead of out of it, which can cause bloating and slow absorption. If your drink tastes like lemonade, it probably has too much sugar to hydrate efficiently.
The second mistake is skipping the salt entirely. Potassium, magnesium, and flavor additions are all useful, but sodium is the primary electrolyte in sweat and the one your body needs most urgently during rehydration. A “natural electrolyte drink” made from just coconut water and fruit juice without added salt is a tasty beverage, but it’s not optimized for rehydration.
Finally, don’t use sea salt or Himalayan pink salt expecting a meaningful mineral boost. These salts contain trace minerals, but the amounts are negligible at the quantities you’re using. They work fine as your salt source, just don’t pay a premium thinking they’ll replace a potassium or magnesium supplement.
