The most accurate way to measure kratom powder is with a digital scale that reads to at least 0.1 grams. A level teaspoon of kratom powder typically weighs between 2 and 2.5 grams, but that number shifts depending on how finely the powder is ground, how tightly it’s packed, and even the specific strain. For something where a gram or two can meaningfully change your experience, that variability matters.
Why a Digital Scale Is Worth It
Kratom’s effects are dose-dependent. Research on regular kratom users found that most people reported beneficial effects in the 1 to 5 gram range, while adverse effects became more common above 8 grams. The average amount people described as “effective” was about 6.85 grams, while “a bit too much” averaged 8.68 grams. That’s less than a 2-gram gap between a good experience and a bad one.
A digital scale accurate to 0.1 grams costs between $10 and $20 and removes the guesswork entirely. Look for one with a capacity of at least 200 grams and a readability of 0.1g or finer. Scales that read to 0.01g offer even more precision, though 0.1g is sufficient for most people working with kratom powder.
How to Use a Digital Scale
Place the scale on a flat, stable surface away from drafts or vibrations. A mousepad underneath can help absorb minor vibrations from appliances or foot traffic. Turn the scale on and wait for it to display 0.0g before doing anything else.
Set a small cup, bowl, or piece of paper on the platform, then press the tare button. This resets the display to zero so you’re only weighing the powder, not the container. Spoon kratom powder into the container until you reach your target weight. Go slowly as you approach the number, since it’s easy to overshoot by half a gram with a single scoop.
If your scale has been sitting unused for a while or you’ve moved it to a new location, calibrate it before relying on its readings. Most scales have a calibration mode you access by holding down a specific button until “CAL” appears on the display. The screen will flash a target weight (usually the scale’s full capacity), and you place the matching calibration weight on the platform. The scale adjusts itself and returns to normal mode. Calibration weights usually come with the scale or can be purchased separately for a few dollars.
Measuring With Spoons
If you don’t have a scale, standard measuring spoons give you a rough estimate. Here are the commonly cited conversions:
- 1 level teaspoon: approximately 2 to 2.5 grams
- 1 level tablespoon: approximately 6 grams
- 1 size 00 capsule: approximately 0.5 grams
The key word is “level.” A heaped teaspoon can easily hold twice as much as a level one. Use the back of a knife to sweep excess powder off the top of the spoon so the surface is flat. Even then, expect your measurement to be off by as much as half a gram in either direction. Finely ground powder packs more densely than coarser grinds, and different strains have slightly different densities. If you use spoons regularly, it’s worth eventually checking your usual scoop against a scale so you know how accurate your technique actually is.
Keeping Your Amounts Consistent
Consistency matters more than precision. If you find an amount that works for you, being able to replicate it every time is the whole point of measuring. A few habits help with that.
Store your kratom in a sealed container in a cool, dry place. Powder that absorbs moisture from the air becomes heavier per volume, which throws off spoon-based measurements. If you notice your powder has clumped or feels damp, a scale is the only reliable way to measure it.
When switching to a new batch or strain, treat it as a fresh starting point even if you’re using the same amount. Alkaloid concentrations vary between batches, and a new bag of powder may also have a different grind size that changes how it sits in a spoon. Weighing your first few servings from a new batch on a scale helps you recalibrate your expectations.
Capsules as a Built-In Measuring Tool
Pre-filled capsules and empty capsules you fill yourself offer another way to control your amount. The standard size 00 capsule holds roughly 0.5 grams of kratom powder. That makes the math straightforward: 6 capsules equals about 3 grams, 10 capsules equals about 5 grams.
Filling your own capsules with a small capsule machine lets you weigh out a specific total amount on a scale, divide it evenly, and then take a precise number of capsules each time without re-measuring. This is especially practical if you’re preparing multiple servings in advance. The tradeoff is time: filling capsules by hand is slow, and capsule machines take some practice to use cleanly.
Tea, Toss and Wash, and Other Methods
Your measurement technique shouldn’t change based on how you plan to consume the powder. Whether you’re stirring it into water, brewing it as tea, mixing it into a smoothie, or using the “toss and wash” method (placing powder directly on your tongue and chasing it with liquid), you still want to weigh or measure the dry powder before it touches any liquid.
For tea, some people brew a larger batch and divide it into portions. If you go this route, weigh the total amount of powder before brewing, then divide the finished tea into equal volumes. For example, if you brew 6 grams of powder into 12 ounces of tea, each 4-ounce portion contains roughly 2 grams worth of kratom. Keep in mind that not all of the active compounds may extract fully into the water, so tea made from a given weight of powder may feel different than the same weight taken directly.
