How to Measure PP Size: Length, Girth & Mistakes

To measure penis size accurately, you need a rigid ruler or a flexible measuring tape, depending on whether you’re measuring length or girth. The method used in clinical settings is called the “bone-pressed” technique, which gives the most consistent and reliable result. Here’s exactly how to do both measurements.

How to Measure Length

Length is measured along the top of the penis, from the base to the tip of the head. For the most accurate result, use a rigid ruler and press it firmly against the pubic bone at the base. This is the bone-pressed method, and it accounts for the layer of fat that sits above the pubic bone. Without pressing through that fat pad, you’ll get a shorter reading that can vary depending on body weight.

Stand upright and hold the penis straight out, perpendicular to your body. Place the ruler along the top surface (the side facing your stomach when erect) and press the end gently but firmly into the pubic bone. Read the measurement at the very tip of the head. If the penis has a curve, a flexible measuring tape placed along the top surface will follow the curve and give a more accurate number than a rigid ruler.

For the most consistent reading, measure while fully erect. Erection firmness varies from one session to the next, so measuring two or three times on different days and averaging the results gives you a more reliable number.

How to Measure Girth

Girth is the circumference, measured around the thickest part of the shaft. A flexible fabric measuring tape works best. Wrap it snugly around the thickest part of the shaft, typically just below the head, and note where the tape meets itself.

If you don’t have a measuring tape, wrap a piece of string around the shaft, pinch or mark the point where the ends meet, then lay the string flat against a ruler. Measure while fully erect, since girth changes significantly between flaccid and erect states.

Stretched Length as an Alternative

If measuring while erect isn’t practical, stretched flaccid length is a widely accepted substitute. Clinicians use it regularly because it closely approximates erect length for most men. The European Association of Urology defines stretched penile length as the distance between the pubic bone and the tip of the head while the penis is gently pulled forward.

To do this: press one hand flat against the area above the base of the penis so you can see down to where the shaft begins. With the other hand, hold the head between your thumb and forefinger and extend the penis straight out, away from your body, until it’s fully stretched but not uncomfortable. Measure from the pubic bone to the tip.

Common Mistakes That Skew Results

The biggest source of error is not pressing the ruler to the pubic bone. The fat pad above the pubic area can absorb a centimeter or more of visible length, and its thickness changes with weight gain or loss. The bone-pressed method eliminates this variable, which is why it’s the clinical standard.

Measuring from the side or underside of the penis will also give an inaccurate number. The top surface, from pubic bone to tip, is the standard reference point. Measuring from below adds the extra distance along the underside of the shaft, which is naturally longer.

Temperature matters too. Cold conditions cause significant shrinkage in flaccid measurements. If you’re measuring flaccid or stretched length, do it at a comfortable room temperature. Erection quality also fluctuates based on arousal level, time of day, and overall health, which is why multiple measurements averaged together give the most honest result.

Average Size for Reference

A systematic review of over 15,000 men found the average erect length to be about 5.1 inches (13.0 cm), with an average flaccid length of 3.6 inches (9.2 cm) and an average stretched length of 5.2 inches (13.2 cm). Average erect girth came in around 3.7 inches (9.3 cm). A larger meta-analysis published in the World Journal of Men’s Health found a slightly higher pooled average erect length of about 5.5 inches (13.9 cm).

These averages come with wide natural variation. The 5th percentile for erect length is around 4 inches (10 cm), meaning 95% of men measure longer than that. For girth, the 5th percentile is about 3 inches (7.75 cm).

Why Perception Often Doesn’t Match Reality

In a survey of over 52,000 men, 66% rated their penis as average, 22% as large, and 12% as small. But self-perception tends to skew negative compared to actual measurements. Looking down at your own body foreshortens the view, making length appear shorter than it would from the side. Comparing yourself to what you see in pornography further distorts expectations, since performers are selected for being statistical outliers and camera angles exaggerate proportions.

For some men, concern about size becomes persistent and distressing enough to qualify as body dysmorphic disorder, a condition where a person fixates on a perceived physical flaw that others wouldn’t notice or would consider normal. Someone with this pattern of thinking may measure repeatedly, avoid intimate situations, or experience significant anxiety. This is a recognized psychological condition with effective treatments, not a size problem.
