How to Measure Your Pupillary Distance at Home Accurately

You can measure your pupillary distance (PD) at home with a millimeter ruler and a mirror in about two minutes. The number you’re looking for is the distance in millimeters between the centers of your two pupils, and for most adults it falls somewhere between 54 and 74 mm. You need this measurement to order glasses online, since it tells the lab where to center each lens.

The Mirror and Ruler Method

This is the most reliable way to measure PD at home. You’ll need a standard ruler with millimeter markings (not just inches) and a well-lit mirror. Stand about 18 inches from the mirror with the ruler held horizontally just below your eyes, millimeter markings facing the mirror so you can read them in the reflection.

Close your right eye first. With your left eye open, line up the zero mark on the ruler with the center of your left pupil. Picture an imaginary vertical line splitting that pupil into two equal halves, and place the zero right on it. Once the ruler is positioned, hold it completely still against your face.

Now open your right eye and close your left eye. Looking with your right eye only, find the millimeter mark that lines up with the center of your right pupil. That number is your PD. Most people land somewhere between 57 and 65 mm.

The reason you switch which eye is open matters: you’re avoiding parallax error. If both eyes were open, slight differences in viewing angle between your two eyes would shift the ruler’s apparent position and throw off your reading.

Take Multiple Readings

Don’t rely on a single measurement. Repeat the process three to five times and compare your results. If you’re getting the same number (or numbers within 1 mm of each other) consistently, you can trust it. If your readings are jumping around by 2 or 3 mm, something is off with your technique.

The most common mistakes are tilting the ruler so it’s not perfectly horizontal, moving it between readings, and letting your gaze drift instead of focusing on a fixed point in the mirror. Keep the ruler level across your brow line, hold your head straight, and look directly at your own reflection each time.

Having a Friend Measure You

If the mirror method feels awkward, a second person can make it easier. Sit facing your friend at arm’s length and look at a distant object behind them (not at their face). This keeps your eyes relaxed and pointed straight ahead, which gives a more accurate “distance PD” reading.

Your friend holds the ruler across your brow and, closing one of their own eyes to avoid parallax, lines up the zero with the center of one pupil, then reads the millimeter mark at the center of the other. Again, repeat this a few times to confirm consistency.

Smartphone Apps and Online Tools

Several apps and websites can calculate your PD from a photo or your phone’s camera. A 2023 study published in Cureus compared three popular apps against a professional digital pupilometer on 44 subjects. The Eye Measure and Warby Parker apps performed well, averaging less than 0.6 mm off from the clinical measurement. A third app, PDCheck AR, was significantly less accurate, averaging about 1.4 mm of error.

Some online retailers offer their own PD tools that ask you to hold a standard credit card, gift card, or student ID against your face while your webcam captures an image. The card gives the software a known reference size to calculate scale. These tools are convenient, but their accuracy depends heavily on lighting, camera quality, and holding the card flush against your face without tilting it.

If you use an app, it’s still worth cross-checking with the ruler method. When the two approaches agree within 1 mm, you can feel confident in the number.

How Much Accuracy Actually Matters

Whether a small PD error causes problems depends on what kind of lenses you’re ordering and how strong your prescription is. For single-vision lenses with a low to moderate prescription, being off by 1 to 2 mm is generally well within acceptable tolerance. You’re unlikely to notice any difference in comfort or clarity.

Progressive lenses are a different story. They have narrow viewing corridors and multiple focal zones, so even a small PD error can shift your eyes into the wrong part of the lens. This can make the reading zone hard to find or cause a swimmy, off-balance feeling when you first put the glasses on.

High prescriptions also amplify the effect of PD errors. A stronger lens bends light more aggressively, so even a 1 mm misalignment creates more unwanted prismatic effect, meaning your eyes have to work harder to compensate. If your prescription is above roughly +/- 4.00 diopters, or you’re ordering progressives, aim for the most precise PD you can get. Repeating your measurements and averaging the results is the simplest way to tighten your accuracy.

Single PD vs. Dual PD

Most faces aren’t perfectly symmetrical, which means the distance from the bridge of your nose to your right pupil may differ slightly from the distance to your left. A “single PD” is the total distance between both pupils. A “dual PD” gives you two numbers: one for each eye measured from the center of the nose bridge.

To measure dual PD, use the same mirror and ruler setup, but instead of going from one pupil to the other, measure from the center of each pupil to the middle of your nose bridge. You’ll end up with two values, often written as something like 31/32. Some online retailers ask for dual PD specifically, especially for progressive or bifocal lenses, because it allows more precise centering of each lens independently. If a retailer only asks for one number, add your two values together for the total.
