Avoiding mosquito bites comes down to a layered approach: wearing the right repellent, choosing smart clothing, and eliminating breeding grounds near your home. No single method is foolproof, but combining a few strategies can make you nearly invisible to mosquitoes.
Why Mosquitoes Pick You Over Others
Mosquitoes don’t choose targets randomly. Every person exhales carbon dioxide, which acts as a long-range signal that draws mosquitoes in from dozens of feet away. Once they get closer, your skin chemistry takes over. People with higher levels of carboxylic acids, a type of fatty acid produced naturally on the skin, are significantly more attractive to mosquitoes than others. This is largely determined by your skin’s bacterial community, which means some people genuinely do get bitten more, and it’s not just their imagination.
Body heat, sweat, and even what you’re wearing also play a role. Mosquitoes are visual hunters once they’re within range, and they’re drawn to specific colors. Research at the University of Washington found that after detecting CO2, mosquitoes fly toward red, orange, black, and cyan while ignoring green, purple, blue, and white. Human skin, regardless of pigmentation, emits light in the red-orange wavelength range, which partly explains why exposed skin attracts them so reliably.
Choosing the Right Repellent
The CDC recommends six active ingredients for skin-applied repellents: DEET, picaridin, IR3535, oil of lemon eucalyptus (OLE), para-menthane-diol (PMD), and 2-undecanone. All six are EPA-registered and proven effective. DEET is the most studied and widely available, but picaridin works comparably and feels less greasy on skin.
Concentration matters more than brand. Products with less than 10% active ingredient typically protect for only one to two hours. Higher concentrations last longer, though DEET’s effectiveness plateaus around 50%, so there’s no real benefit to going above that. Picaridin at 20% concentration offers similar duration to 20-30% DEET. Whichever you choose, reapply as the label directs, especially if you’re sweating heavily or swimming. Perspiration, heat, and physical activity all shorten how long a repellent works.
If you’re also wearing sunscreen, apply the sunscreen first and the repellent second. Reversing that order reduces the repellent’s effectiveness.
What to Wear
Long sleeves and long pants are the simplest physical barrier, but the color of your clothing matters too. Since mosquitoes are attracted to red, orange, and black after sensing CO2, wearing white, green, blue, or purple clothing can reduce how visible you are to them. Loose-fitting clothes also help because mosquitoes can bite through tight fabric that presses against your skin.
For extra protection, treat your clothing with permethrin, an insecticide that either repels mosquitoes on contact or kills them shortly after landing. Factory-treated garments remain effective for up to 70 washes. If you spray-treat clothing yourself, expect the protection to last about six washes before you need to reapply. Permethrin is for clothing only and should never be applied directly to skin.
Protecting Your Yard
A mosquito egg can develop into a biting adult in as little as 7 to 10 days, which means a forgotten bucket of rainwater can become a mosquito factory in just over a week. Walk your property weekly and dump any standing water you find: plant saucers, clogged gutters, birdbaths, kiddie pools, old tires, even bottle caps. Mosquitoes need surprisingly little water to breed.
For water features you can’t drain, like rain barrels or ornamental ponds, use mosquito dunks containing a biological larvicide that kills larvae without harming fish, pets, or plants. Keep gutters clean and make sure outdoor drains flow freely.
Spatial Repellents for Patios and Decks
Heated repellent devices that vaporize a repellent compound into the air can create a protection zone of about 20 feet (roughly 315 square feet) per unit. For larger patios or gatherings, spacing multiple units 20 feet apart extends coverage. These work best in calm conditions. Wind disperses the vapor and reduces effectiveness significantly.
Citronella candles provide minimal protection by comparison. While citronella is an EPA-registered repellent, the amount released by a candle is low and dissipates quickly outdoors. If you’re relying on a spatial repellent for an evening outside, heated devices outperform candles by a wide margin.
Keeping Kids Safe
EPA-registered repellents are safe for children when used as directed, with one exception: products containing oil of lemon eucalyptus or PMD should not be used on children under 3 years old. For babies, the best approach is physical barriers. Dress them in lightweight long sleeves and pants, and drape mosquito netting over strollers and baby carriers.
When applying repellent to older children, avoid their hands, eyes, mouth, and any broken skin. Spray it onto your own hands first, then rub it onto the child’s face and exposed skin. This prevents kids from rubbing repellent into their eyes or ingesting it. Pregnant and breastfeeding women can safely use all EPA-registered repellents as directed.
Peak Bite Times and Timing Your Exposure
The mosquitoes that carry diseases like Zika, dengue, and chikungunya (Aedes species) bite primarily during the day, especially early morning and late afternoon. The species that carry West Nile virus (Culex mosquitoes) are most active from dusk through dawn. If you’re in an area with both types, there’s really no safe window, and repellent becomes essential any time you’re outdoors.
Running a fan on your porch or patio can help. Mosquitoes are weak fliers, and even moderate airflow makes it harder for them to land on you and disrupts the CO2 plume your body produces. A simple box fan or oscillating fan pointed at seating areas is a surprisingly effective, chemical-free deterrent.
