How to Not Sweat at Night: Causes and Fixes

Night sweats often come down to a bedroom that’s too warm, bedding that traps heat, or habits that raise your core temperature before sleep. The good news: most causes are fixable without medical help. Your body naturally drops its core temperature as you fall asleep, and anything that interferes with that cooling process can trigger sweating. Here’s how to work with your body’s thermoregulation instead of against it.

Why Your Body Sweats During Sleep

Your brain’s internal thermostat actively lowers your core temperature in the hours leading up to sleep and continues cooling you throughout the night. During light sleep stages, your body can still sweat and shiver to regulate temperature. But during REM sleep (when most dreaming happens), that thermoregulation is largely shut off. If your environment is too warm during REM, your body has very little ability to compensate, and you wake up drenched.

This means the conditions you set before falling asleep matter enormously. You can’t rely on your body to self-correct once you’re in deep sleep.

Set Your Bedroom to 60–67°F

The Cleveland Clinic recommends keeping your bedroom between 60 and 67°F (15 to 19°C) for adults. That range sounds cold to many people, but it aligns with your body’s natural nighttime temperature drop. If your thermostat is set to 72°F or higher, that alone could explain your night sweats.

If you don’t have air conditioning, a fan pointed toward your bed helps move air across your skin and speed up evaporative cooling. Cracking a window on cooler nights creates cross-ventilation. Even dropping the room temperature by a few degrees can make a noticeable difference.

Choose the Right Sheets and Sleepwear

Fabric choice has a bigger effect on nighttime sweating than most people realize. Polyester and other synthetics trap body heat and lock moisture against your skin. In a warm room, polyester sheets can feel like a sauna within an hour.

Linen is the strongest performer for hot sleepers. Its thick, loosely woven fibers allow maximum airflow, and it dissipates heat instead of absorbing it under your body. Bamboo-derived fabrics are naturally moisture-wicking, pulling sweat away from your skin so it evaporates faster. Cotton is a solid middle ground, though standard cotton absorbs moisture and stays damp longer than linen or bamboo. If you prefer cotton, look for percale weaves or long-staple varieties like Supima, which breathe better than sateen or flannel.

The same logic applies to what you wear to bed. Lightweight, breathable fabrics (or sleeping without clothes) let heat escape from your skin. Tight-fitting synthetic pajamas do the opposite.

Take a Warm Shower Before Bed

This sounds counterintuitive, but a warm shower one to two hours before bed actually helps you cool down faster. A meta-analysis of 17 studies found that bathing in water between 104 and 108.5°F improved sleep quality and helped people fall asleep faster. The mechanism: warm water dilates blood vessels in your hands and feet, which allows body heat to escape more quickly once you get out. Researchers call this the “warm bath effect.”

Cold showers before bed, on the other hand, have shown mixed results. Cold water raises cortisol and norepinephrine, both of which increase alertness, exactly the opposite of what you want at bedtime.

Watch What You Eat and Drink at Night

Alcohol is one of the most common triggers for night sweats. When you drink, your heart rate increases and blood vessels in your skin dilate, a process called vasodilation. That flushed, warm feeling you get after a drink isn’t just cosmetic. It triggers your sweat glands. Even moderate drinking in the evening can disrupt your body’s temperature regulation enough to cause sweating hours later while you sleep.

Spicy food, heavy meals, and caffeine close to bedtime can also raise your core temperature or stimulate your nervous system. If you’re waking up sweaty, try cutting off alcohol and heavy food at least three hours before bed and see if the pattern changes.

Consider Your Mattress and Pillow

Memory foam is notorious for trapping heat. If your mattress feels warm, there are a few tiers of cooling technology worth understanding.

Gel-infused foam provides some initial cooling but typically loses its effect within 20 to 45 minutes as the gel absorbs your body heat and saturates. Phase-change materials perform better, actively absorbing warmth and staying effective for 45 to 90 minutes. Innerspring and hybrid mattresses with open coil systems allow air to circulate through the mattress all night, though they’re temperature-neutral rather than actively cool.

Active cooling systems, like bed fans or water-cooled mattress pads, use electricity to continuously move heat away from your body throughout the night. They’re the most effective option for persistent night sweats, though they’re also the most expensive. A simpler alternative: a breathable mattress topper made from latex or wool, both of which regulate temperature better than foam.

Medications That Cause Night Sweats

If you started sweating at night around the same time you began a new medication, the drug could be the cause. Antidepressants are among the most common culprits. SSRIs cause excessive sweating in roughly 7 to 19% of patients, depending on the specific drug. Other antidepressant classes, including tricyclics and certain newer medications, also clearly trigger sweating.

Other drug categories linked to night sweats include blood pressure medications, hormone therapies, and some diabetes drugs. If you suspect a medication is the cause, talk to your prescriber about alternatives or dose adjustments. Don’t stop taking a prescribed medication on your own.

Hormonal Changes and Night Sweats

For women in their 40s and 50s, hormonal shifts are a leading cause of night sweats. About 25% of menstruating women in midlife experience vasomotor symptoms (hot flashes and night sweats) before they’ve even skipped a period. These episodes tend to follow a cyclical pattern, peaking just before menstrual flow.

Hormonal night sweats can be intense enough to soak through sheets, and they often persist for years during the menopausal transition. The environmental strategies above still help, but if night sweats are disrupting your sleep regularly, hormonal treatments and non-hormonal prescription options exist that can reduce their frequency significantly.

When Night Sweats Signal Something Serious

Most night sweats are caused by a warm room, the wrong bedding, or a lifestyle trigger. But certain combinations of symptoms point to something that needs medical investigation. Drenching night sweats paired with unintentional weight loss (more than 5% of your body weight over six to twelve months), persistent fevers, unexplained fatigue, or swollen lymph nodes that last longer than four to six weeks are red flags for infection or malignancy, including lymphoma.

Easy bruising, unusual bleeding, or persistent pale skin can suggest a blood-related condition. These patterns are uncommon, but if your night sweats are new, severe, and accompanied by any of these signs, they warrant prompt evaluation rather than a new set of sheets.
