That’s the goal, not the starting point. If you can only walk to the mailbox and back, that’s where you begin. The key is consistency and gradual progression. Even 10 minutes of walking several times a day builds a foundation. Over weeks, you extend the duration and eventually the intensity. Resistance training is particularly important because chemotherapy accelerates muscle loss, and rebuilding that muscle directly improves both strength and energy levels.

Your individual fluid needs depend on your body size, activity level, and ongoing symptoms, so a blanket “eight glasses a day” recommendation may not be enough.

Broths, electrolyte drinks, and foods like bananas and potatoes can help. Be cautious about overdoing fluids without electrolytes, as drinking excessive plain water in rare cases can dilute sodium to dangerous levels.
Managing Your Energy Through the Day
Until your stamina rebuilds, you need to spend your limited energy strategically. A few principles from UCSF Health’s energy conservation framework make a real difference:
- Plan around your peak hours. Most people have a window, often mid-morning, when they feel their best. Schedule demanding tasks like errands, exercise, or important phone calls during that window.

- Spread tasks across the week. Trying to clean the entire house on Saturday because you “feel okay” will likely cost you the next two days. Distribute household chores evenly.
- Stop before you crash. If you wait until you’re exhausted to rest, you’ve already overdone it. Take breaks before fatigue sets in, even when you feel like you could keep going.
This isn’t about being lazy. It’s about recognizing that you have a limited daily energy budget and making deliberate choices about where to spend it.
Fixing Sleep Problems
Poor sleep is extremely common during and after chemotherapy, and it creates a vicious cycle with fatigue. You’re exhausted but can’t sleep well, which makes the next day worse. The National Cancer Institute highlights cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) as one of the most effective approaches for cancer-related sleep problems. A CBT therapist helps you identify and replace the thought patterns and habits that keep you awake.
Basic sleep hygiene also matters. Go to bed only when you’re actually sleepy. Keep the room dark and cool. Stop using screens at least a couple of hours before bed. Avoid large meals or lots of fluids close to bedtime. If you lie in bed for more than 20 minutes without falling asleep, get up and do something quiet in low light until drowsiness returns. Daytime exercise helps with sleep quality, but try to finish workouts at least a few hours before bed.
Yoga and Mind-Body Practices
A meta-analysis published in the JNCI Cancer Spectrum found that yoga practice produced a statistically significant reduction in cancer-related fatigue across 29 studies. Programs that included physical poses were more effective than those limited to breathing exercises alone. The average program lasted about two months, with sessions running roughly 75 minutes each.
The improvements were modest. They generally didn’t cross the threshold for what researchers consider clinically significant on standard fatigue scales. But many participants reported meaningful improvements in their quality of life, mood, and sense of control. If traditional exercise feels too daunting as a starting point, gentle yoga or tai chi can serve as a bridge, building flexibility and confidence before you add more demanding activity.
When Fatigue Has a Treatable Cause
Sometimes post-chemo weakness isn’t just fatigue. It’s being driven or worsened by a specific medical condition that can be treated directly. Anemia (low red blood cell counts) is one of the most common culprits, since chemotherapy suppresses bone marrow function. Thyroid dysfunction, depression, uncontrolled pain, and nutritional deficiencies can all compound the problem.

These stimulant-type drugs have shown mixed results in clinical trials. Some patients experience meaningful relief while study averages show limited benefit over placebo.
