How to Prepare HiPP Formula: Steps, Water & Storage

Preparing HiPP formula correctly comes down to using the right water temperature, measuring powder accurately, and feeding the bottle immediately. The process takes about five minutes once you get the hang of it, but the details matter for both safety and nutrition.

What You Need Before You Start

Gather a clean bottle, nipple, ring, the HiPP formula canister, and freshly boiled water. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water. Make sure your prep area is clear of raw food, as bacteria from uncooked ingredients can contaminate the bottle.

Your bottle, nipple, and ring should be cleaned after every single feeding. If you use rubber or latex nipples, boil them periodically to sterilize. Silicone nipples don’t need boiling.

Step-by-Step Preparation

Boil fresh water and let it cool to between 40 and 50°C (104 to 122°F). This temperature range is important for HiPP specifically. Water that’s too hot destroys nutrients and kills the probiotic bacteria included in many HiPP formulas. Water that’s too cool won’t dissolve the powder properly.

Pour the correct amount of cooled, boiled water into the bottle first, then add the powder. To measure the powder, fill the scoop loosely and level off the excess with a flat edge like a clean knife. Don’t pack the scoop or heap it. Overmeasuring even slightly changes the concentration, which can be hard on your baby’s kidneys and digestion. Stick exactly to the dosage table on your specific HiPP product, since the ratio varies between stages.

Close the bottle with the nipple and ring, then shake until the powder dissolves completely. Let the formula cool to drinking temperature, around 37°C (98.6°F), which is body temperature. You can speed this up by holding the bottle under cool running water. Always test the temperature by dripping a few drops on the inside of your wrist. It should feel warm, not hot.

Why Water Temperature Matters More Than You Think

Many parents wonder whether to use boiling water straight from the kettle. For HiPP formulas, the answer is no. Pouring boiling or near-boiling water directly onto the powder damages heat-sensitive nutrients and any added probiotics. The sweet spot of 40 to 50°C is warm enough to dissolve the powder but cool enough to preserve what makes the formula nutritionally complete.

For babies under two months old, premature babies, or those with weakened immune systems, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends using boiled water to eliminate any microbes. Boil the water first, then let it cool for roughly five minutes before checking the temperature. A simple kitchen thermometer takes the guesswork out of this step.

What Type of Water to Use

Tap water is fine in most areas unless you know your local supply is contaminated. Fluoridated tap water is actually preferable as the primary water source, with occasional use of non-fluoridated bottled water for variety. If you use well water, have it tested for bacteria and nitrates before using it for formula. Bottled “nursery water” works too, but it still needs to be boiled for very young or immunocompromised babies.

Reducing Air Bubbles and Fussiness

HiPP’s official instructions say to shake the bottle, and that works. But if your baby seems gassy or fussy after feedings, the shaking itself could be introducing excess air. Many parents find that swirling the bottle in a circular motion dissolves the powder with fewer bubbles. Another popular technique is stirring with a fork or a small whisk inside the bottle, using gentle circular motions rather than vigorous beating. This gives you a smooth, lump-free mix without the foam that shaking creates.

If bubbles do form, letting the bottle sit for a minute or two before feeding allows them to rise and pop. Some parents also tilt the bottle while feeding to keep the nipple full of milk rather than air.

Storage Rules: Make It Fresh Every Time

HiPP is clear on this point: prepare each bottle from scratch right before feeding and use it immediately. Don’t save leftover formula for the next feeding. Once your baby has drunk from a bottle, bacteria from their mouth enters the milk and begins multiplying. Even refrigerating the leftovers doesn’t make them safe.

Don’t store prepared formula in the fridge for later, and never keep a prepared bottle warm in a bottle warmer or thermos flask. Warm milk is an ideal breeding ground for bacteria, and holding it at a warm temperature for any length of time increases the risk of contamination quickly.

Warming a Cold Bottle Safely

If you need to warm a bottle that was prepared with water slightly too cool, place it under warm running water, set it in a bowl of warm water, or use an electric bottle warmer. Never use a microwave. Microwaves heat liquids unevenly, creating hot spots in the milk that can burn your baby’s mouth even when the outside of the bottle feels fine. If you do use a bottle warmer or warm water bath, don’t leave the bottle warming for more than 15 minutes.

Preparing Bottles Away From Home

When you’re out, the safest approach is to bring a thermos of freshly boiled water that’s cooled to the right temperature range, a clean bottle, and pre-measured powder in a separate container. Combine them on the spot, shake or swirl, and feed. This keeps the formula as fresh as one made in your kitchen. Avoid preparing bottles at home and carrying them around in an insulated bag, since there’s no reliable way to keep them at a safe temperature during transit.

For night feeds, the same thermos method saves time. Boil water before bed, pour it into an insulated flask, and keep it on your nightstand with a clean bottle and pre-portioned powder. By the time you wake for a feeding, the water will have cooled closer to the ideal range, and you can have a bottle ready in under a minute.
