Kratom powder is most commonly prepared as a tea, swallowed directly with liquid (called “toss and wash”), or packed into capsules at home. Each method has tradeoffs in taste, convenience, and how quickly you feel the effects. Here’s how each one works, along with the practical details that make the difference between a smooth experience and a messy one.
Brewing Kratom Tea
Tea is the most traditional way to use kratom and the method most people find palatable, since you can mask the naturally bitter flavor with honey, lemon, or other additions. The key detail: use hot water, not boiling. Kratom’s active compounds begin to break down at high temperatures. One of its alkaloids shows significant degradation at temperatures as low as 40°C (104°F) over extended exposure, and boiling water (100°C) accelerates this process for the full range of compounds. The practical fix is simple: bring your water to a boil, then let it sit for at least one minute before adding your kratom.
For a single cup, use about 8 ounces of water. Add your measured kratom powder, stir it in, and let it steep for 10 to 15 minutes. Longer steeping produces a stronger, more bitter tea. Some people simmer the mixture on low heat rather than just steeping, which can improve extraction, but avoid a rolling boil. Once it’s done, you can strain the powder out through a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth if the gritty texture bothers you. Adding a squeeze of lemon or lime serves a dual purpose: it cuts the bitterness and the acidity may help keep the alkaloids stable during brewing.
The Toss and Wash Method
Toss and wash is the fastest preparation method. You measure your powder, place it on your tongue, and wash it down with a large gulp of water or juice. It takes seconds, requires no equipment beyond a spoon, and delivers the powder without any heat exposure.
The tradeoffs are real, though. Kratom powder is extremely fine and dry, which creates two problems: it tastes intensely bitter when it hits your tongue, and if you inhale even slightly at the wrong moment, you’ll get powder in your throat or airway. This triggers coughing, gagging, or choking, especially with larger amounts.
If you use this method, keep your portions small. Anything over 2 teaspoons (roughly 4.8 grams) in a single mouthful becomes difficult to swallow safely. For larger amounts, split it into two or more rounds. Have your drink ready before the powder goes in your mouth, and breathe through your nose only once the powder is on your tongue. Some people prefer to put the liquid in their mouth first, then tip the powder in on top, which reduces the chance of inhaling loose powder.
Measuring Without a Scale
A digital kitchen scale is the most reliable way to measure kratom powder, but if you’re using a spoon, one level teaspoon holds approximately 2.4 grams. That’s a level teaspoon, not heaped. A slightly rounded scoop can easily double the amount, so consistency matters. Typical servings range from 1 to 5 grams, meaning most people use somewhere between half a teaspoon and two teaspoons per session.
Filling Your Own Capsules
Capsules eliminate the bitter taste entirely and make portions consistent, but they take time to prepare. You’ll need empty gelatin or vegetarian capsules (available online or at supplement shops) and optionally a capsule filling tray, which speeds up the process significantly.
Capsule size determines how much powder each one holds:
- Size 0: approximately 0.4 to 0.7 grams per capsule
- Size 00: approximately 0.5 to 0.95 grams per capsule
- Size 000: approximately 0.8 to 1.6 grams per capsule
The wide ranges reflect how tightly you pack the powder and kratom’s particular density. For most people, size 00 is the sweet spot: large enough to hold a meaningful amount without being uncomfortable to swallow. To fill them, separate the capsule halves, press the longer end into a small pile of powder, tap it to settle, and press again until full. Cap it, and repeat. A filling tray lets you do 24 or more at once. Store filled capsules in a cool, dry place. The main downside of capsules is that they take longer to take effect since the casing needs to dissolve in your stomach first, typically adding 15 to 30 minutes compared to tea or toss and wash.
Mixing Into Food or Drinks
Kratom powder blends into strongly flavored drinks better than you might expect. Orange juice, chocolate milk, and smoothies with banana or peanut butter are popular choices because their bold flavors counteract the bitterness. Applesauce and yogurt also work well for stirring in a measured amount. The key is using something with enough flavor and texture to mask the taste, and stirring thoroughly so you don’t hit pockets of dry powder.
Avoid mixing kratom into hot coffee or other boiling liquids for the same reason you let tea water cool first: high heat degrades the active compounds. Warm drinks are fine, just not scalding ones.
Do Strains Need Different Preparation?
Kratom is sold in red, green, and white varieties, each marketed with distinct effects. You might wonder whether different strains need different brewing times or temperatures. They don’t. Laboratory analysis of red, green, and white kratom products has found no significant differences in alkaloid content between them. A 2023 study published in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health found that while users reported distinct experiences matching each strain’s marketing description, the chemical profiles were essentially the same. The researchers suggested the differences may be driven by user expectations rather than chemistry. Whatever strain you’re using, the preparation method stays the same.
Storing Prepared Kratom
Dry kratom powder keeps well in an airtight container, away from light and heat, for months. Brewed kratom tea is a different story. Treat it like any perishable beverage: refrigerate it and use it within a few days. Some people brew a larger batch and store it in the fridge for convenience, which works fine for two to three days. Freezing tea in ice cube trays is another option for longer storage. Alkaloid stability research shows that cooler temperatures (around 4°C, or standard refrigerator temperature) preserve the active compounds well, while leaving prepared kratom at room temperature for extended periods leads to gradual degradation.
Safety Considerations
The FDA has not approved kratom for any use and classifies it as an adulterated product when sold as a dietary supplement or food additive. The agency’s warnings cite risks including liver toxicity, seizures, and the potential for dependence with regular use. In rare cases, deaths have been associated with kratom, though these often involve other substances. Contamination has also been a documented issue: the FDA has flagged kratom products containing Salmonella bacteria and elevated heavy metal levels in the past.
Kratom’s active compounds interact with the same liver enzymes that process many common medications. Specifically, they inhibit CYP3A4 and CYP2D6, two enzymes responsible for breaking down a wide range of prescription drugs, from antidepressants to blood pressure medications. This means kratom can cause other drugs to build up to higher levels in your body than intended. If you take any regular medication, this interaction is worth understanding before combining it with kratom.
