What Actually Causes a Hangover

Your liver converts alcohol into acetaldehyde, a toxic compound that’s far more harmful than alcohol itself. A second enzyme then breaks acetaldehyde down into harmless acetic acid. When you drink faster than your liver can complete that second step, acetaldehyde builds up in your bloodstream and triggers nausea, headache, and rapid heartbeat. On top of that, alcohol triggers an immune response. Supplements marketed as hangover cures, including dihydromyricetin (DHM), have generated interest but lack completed clinical trials demonstrating reliable results in humans. A B-vitamin complex before bed has some theoretical basis since alcohol actively degrades B6, but no controlled study has shown it prevents hangover symptoms at a specific dose. Coffee the next morning may help with grogginess but worsens dehydration and doesn’t address the underlying inflammation or acetaldehyde buildup.
