Carpal tunnel syndrome develops when the median nerve gets compressed as it passes through a narrow passage in your wrist. The good news: most of the factors that lead to this compression are things you can control. Keeping your wrists in neutral positions, taking regular breaks, using the right equipment, and managing certain health conditions all meaningfully reduce your risk.
How Carpal Tunnel Develops
The carpal tunnel is a tight channel on the palm side of your wrist, formed by small bones and a band of connective tissue. The median nerve runs through it alongside nine tendons that control your fingers. When those tendons swell from overuse, inflammation, or fluid retention, the tunnel gets crowded and the nerve gets squeezed. That’s what causes the numbness, tingling, and weakness in your hand.
Prevention comes down to reducing the two things that trigger this chain: repetitive strain on the tendons and conditions that cause swelling inside the tunnel. Both are largely within your control.
Keep Your Wrists Neutral
The single most important habit is maintaining a straight, neutral wrist position during any repetitive hand activity, whether that’s typing, using a mouse, assembly work, or playing an instrument. Bending your wrist up, down, or to the side narrows the carpal tunnel and increases pressure on the nerve. OSHA recommends adjusting your chair, desk, and keyboard so your wrists stay in line with your forearms rather than angling in any direction.
A wrist rest can help, but only if you use it correctly. The pad should contact the heel of your palm, not your wrist itself, and your hands should float above the rest while you’re actively typing. The rest is for pausing, not for leaning on while you work. OSHA recommends choosing a rest that’s at least 1.5 inches deep and matched to the height and slope of your keyboard’s front edge.
If you use a mouse heavily, pay attention to where your hand sits relative to your shoulder. Reaching out to the side or gripping tightly both add strain. Keep the mouse close to the keyboard at the same height, and use your whole arm to move it rather than pivoting from the wrist.
Choose Equipment That Reduces Strain
Standard flat mice force your forearm into full pronation, rotating so your palm faces completely downward. That rotation narrows the carpal tunnel space by up to 20%, and the compression gets worse when you add downward pressure during clicking. During each break, stretch your fingers wide, make a fist, rotate your wrists in circles, and gently shake out your hands. These movements relieve tension in the tendons and improve blood flow through the carpal tunnel.

Nerve Gliding Exercises
Nerve gliding exercises help the median nerve move freely through the carpal tunnel rather than getting stuck or pinched against surrounding tissue. A standard routine recommended by occupational therapists follows five positions in sequence:

- Open your hand and straighten all fingers and your thumb
- Bend your wrist back while moving your thumb away from your palm
- Turn your wrist so your palm faces upward
- Use your other hand to gently pull your thumb farther from your palm
Move through all five positions as one set, and aim for five repetitions three times per day. The movements should be slow and controlled. If any position causes pain or tingling, ease off the stretch rather than pushing through it.
Keep Your Hands Warm
Cold environments are an underappreciated risk factor. Low temperatures cause blood vessels in your hands and wrists to narrow, reducing oxygen delivery to the tissues and slowing nerve conduction. The result is weaker muscle contractions and less efficient hand movement, which means your tendons have to work harder to perform the same tasks.
Research published in Frontiers in Sports and Active Living found that keeping the upper limbs warm is critical for maximizing hand performance and preventing strain, with especially notable benefits for people already showing early signs of carpal tunnel. If you work in a cold environment or handle cold objects, fingerless gloves or heated wrist wraps can make a real difference. Even in an air-conditioned office, keeping your hands and forearms warm helps maintain the flexibility and blood flow that protect the median nerve.
Manage Your Weight and Blood Sugar
Carpal tunnel isn’t just an ergonomic problem. Your overall health plays a significant role. A nationwide study published in ScienceDirect found that adults with obesity had nearly six times the prevalence of carpal tunnel syndrome compared to those at a healthy weight. Even after excluding people with diabetes, the relationship held: obese adults without diabetes still had five times the prevalence of carpal tunnel compared to non-obese adults without diabetes.
The connection is partly mechanical. Excess body fat increases fluid retention and tissue volume throughout the body, including inside the carpal tunnel. Higher weight also promotes chronic low-grade inflammation, which makes tendons more prone to swelling. Diabetes adds another layer of risk because elevated blood sugar damages nerves directly, making the median nerve more vulnerable to compression that a healthier nerve might tolerate without symptoms.
Maintaining a healthy weight and keeping blood sugar well controlled won’t guarantee you avoid carpal tunnel, but they significantly shift the odds in your favor. These factors matter even if your job doesn’t involve heavy computer use or repetitive hand work.
Watch Your Sleeping Position
Many people unknowingly compress their wrists while sleeping by curling their hands under a pillow or bending their wrists sharply. If you wake up with numb or tingling fingers, your sleep posture is likely contributing. A soft wrist brace worn at night keeps your wrist in a neutral position without restricting blood flow. These are inexpensive, available at any pharmacy, and one of the simplest preventive steps you can take, especially if you’re already noticing occasional tingling.
Adjust for Your Specific Activities
Prevention advice often centers on office work, but carpal tunnel affects people across a wide range of activities. Musicians, mechanics, hairstylists, cashiers, and anyone who uses vibrating tools face elevated risk. The core principles remain the same regardless of the activity: keep wrists neutral, take frequent breaks, and reduce grip force whenever possible.
If your work involves vibrating tools like drills or sanders, wear anti-vibration gloves and limit continuous exposure. If you play a musical instrument, warm up your hands before playing and avoid marathon practice sessions without rest. Cashiers and assembly workers should alternate between tasks when possible to vary the hand positions they use throughout a shift. The key in every case is breaking up the repetitive pattern before the tendons become inflamed enough to crowd the nerve.
