There is no guaranteed way to prevent feline infectious peritonitis (FIP), but you can significantly reduce your cat’s risk by limiting exposure to feline coronavirus (FCoV), keeping stress low, and maintaining strict hygiene. FCoV itself is extremely common, infecting 25% to 40% of pet cats and up to 80% to 100% of cats in multi-cat households. In a small percentage of infected cats, the virus mutates inside the body into the form that causes FIP. Prevention focuses on the factors you can control: viral exposure, immune health, and environment.
How FCoV Becomes FIP
Feline coronavirus spreads through the fecal-oral route. Most cats that pick it up experience mild or no symptoms at all. The problem starts when the virus mutates within an individual cat into a form that can infect white blood cells and trigger a severe, systemic inflammatory response. This mutated form is what causes FIP.
Several factors influence whether that mutation happens: the cat’s genetics, the amount of virus they’re exposed to, their age, breed predisposition, immune function, stress levels, and environmental conditions. No single factor is the sole trigger, which is why prevention requires addressing multiple risks at once. Kittens and young cats under two years old are most vulnerable, likely because their immune systems are still developing.
Keep Cat Group Sizes Small
The single biggest environmental risk factor for FIP is living with many cats. In crowded conditions where cats share litter boxes and feeding bowls, feline coronavirus circulates almost universally. The more virus a cat is exposed to, and the more frequently they’re re-exposed, the greater the chance of a dangerous mutation occurring.
If you run a cattery, foster home, or multi-cat household, keeping group sizes as small as practically possible is the most impactful thing you can do. Each cat should have its own litter tray, food bowl, water source, and resting area. Facilities with large numbers of cats find it extremely difficult to eliminate feline coronavirus entirely, so reducing density and avoiding overcrowding is the realistic goal. Even separating cats into smaller, stable groups of two or three rather than housing them all together can lower transmission pressure.
Litter Box Hygiene
Since FCoV spreads through feces, litter box management is your primary tool for cutting transmission. The virus sheds in large quantities in the stool of infected cats, and other cats pick it up when they use the same tray or walk through contaminated litter dust.
Remove feces from litter trays as soon as possible, ideally within hours. Fully clean each tray with detergent twice a week, and disinfect it once a week. Use dust-free litter, because airborne litter particles can carry viral material. Place food and water bowls as far from litter trays as your space allows to reduce the chance of fecal-oral contamination during meals. If disposable litter trays are an option, replace them at least once daily. For standard trays, soak them in an appropriate disinfectant during weekly cleaning.
Choosing the Right Disinfectant
Feline coronavirus can survive on surfaces for days to a few weeks, but it is susceptible to most common disinfectants. The best choice for home use is a sodium hypochlorite solution, which is the active ingredient in household bleach. It is effective against FCoV, widely available, and relatively safe to use around cats.
Use it to clean floors, litter trays, food preparation surfaces, and any shared equipment. Make sure the concentration is adequate, as household bleach products vary in strength. Two disinfectants that do not work against feline coronavirus are benzalkonium chloride (found in some household and pet-specific cleaners) and essential oil-based products. Check labels before assuming a cleaner will do the job.
Minimize Stress
Stress suppresses a cat’s immune function, and a weakened immune system is less capable of controlling feline coronavirus before it mutates. Specific stressors linked to increased FIP risk include moving to a new home, surgery, overcrowding, and disruptions to a cat’s social environment.
For practical purposes, this means giving newly adopted cats time to adjust gradually to their surroundings. Avoid introducing new cats into a household frequently or abruptly. Provide hiding spots, vertical space, and predictable routines. In multi-cat homes, ensure every cat can access resources without competing or feeling cornered. If your cat needs surgery or another medical procedure, keeping their recovery environment calm and familiar can help support their immune response during a vulnerable period.
Why the FIP Vaccine Is Not Recommended
A vaccine for FIP does exist, but it is not recommended by the American Association of Feline Practitioners or the American Animal Hospital Association. The joint 2020 guidelines state there is “insufficient evidence that this vaccine induces clinically relevant protection in the field.” The vaccine targets a different strain of coronavirus (serotype II) than the one that most commonly causes clinical disease in cats (serotype I). On top of that, it only has the potential to protect cats that have never been exposed to any feline coronavirus, and most cats are already seropositive before reaching the recommended vaccination age. The benefits and risks remain unclear, so routine use is not justified.
Why Screening Tests Have Limits
You might wonder whether you can test your cats for FCoV and separate the positive ones. Antibody titer tests can confirm that a cat has been exposed to feline coronavirus, but they cannot distinguish between harmless exposure and the mutated FIP-causing form. A healthy cat with a high antibody level is not necessarily more likely to develop FIP than one with a low level. And cats with weakened immune systems may test with low titers simply because their bodies cannot produce enough antibodies, not because they’re free of the virus.
This means you cannot reliably use blood tests to predict which cats will develop FIP or to screen out “safe” versus “risky” cats in a household. Testing can be useful in some breeding and shelter contexts to monitor overall coronavirus circulation in a group, but it is not a prevention tool for individual cats.
Bringing a New Cat Home Safely
If you’re adopting a kitten or cat from a shelter, cattery, or rescue, the transition period is a high-risk window. The cat has likely been exposed to FCoV in its previous environment, and the stress of rehoming can compromise its immune defenses at exactly the wrong time.
Quarantine the new cat in a separate room for at least two weeks. Give them their own litter tray, food, and water. Keep the space quiet and allow them to acclimate before introducing them to other cats in your home. This protects both the newcomer and your existing cats. Clean any shared surfaces or your hands between interacting with the new and resident cats, since the virus can travel on shoes, clothing, and hands. Once the quarantine period passes and the cat seems healthy, introduce them gradually to minimize social stress for everyone involved.
What You Can Realistically Control
FIP prevention is ultimately about playing the odds. You cannot eliminate feline coronavirus from the world or guarantee your cat’s immune system will handle it perfectly. But the cats at highest risk are those in crowded, stressful environments with poor hygiene and heavy viral loads. By keeping group sizes small, cleaning litter trays diligently, using effective disinfectants, reducing stress, and managing introductions carefully, you remove many of the conditions that make FIP more likely. For most single-cat or small multi-cat households with good hygiene practices, the risk of any individual cat developing FIP remains low.
