Nasolabial folds aren’t entirely preventable because they’re partly structural, created by the way your facial muscles attach to skin every time you smile. But their depth and how early they become noticeable depend heavily on factors you can control: sun exposure, diet, sleep habits, weight stability, and how well you maintain your skin’s collagen supply. Most people start noticing these lines around age 30, and a combination of daily habits can meaningfully slow their progression.
Why These Folds Form in the First Place
Understanding the mechanics helps you target prevention effectively. Three things work together to create nasolabial folds, and they accelerate with age.
First, the fat pad that sits over your cheek is loosely connected to the tissue above the fold line. As the ligaments holding it in place lose resilience, that fat pad slides downward, creating a visible bulge above the crease. Silk or satin pillowcases create less friction than cotton but don’t address the underlying compression the way sleep position does.

The catch: most studies in this area rely on subjective evaluations, and researchers note that more comprehensive, objective research is needed to confirm whether these muscle changes translate into visibly reduced folds. Face yoga is unlikely to cause harm and may offer modest benefits, but it shouldn’t be your primary prevention strategy. Think of it as a supplement to sun protection, retinoids, and dietary habits rather than a replacement.
Professional Options for Early Prevention
If you’re starting to notice faint lines and want to prevent them from becoming deep creases, a dermatologist can offer treatments that work on a structural level.
