Foot odor comes down to bacteria feeding on sweat. Your feet have roughly 250,000 sweat glands, more per square inch than anywhere else on your body. The sweat itself is mostly odorless, but bacteria (primarily staphylococci) break down the amino acid leucine from your skin into isovaleric acid, the compound responsible for that distinctive sweaty smell. Controlling foot odor means targeting one or both sides of that equation: reducing moisture and reducing bacterial growth.
Why Some People’s Feet Smell Worse
Not everyone deals with foot odor equally. Hormonal shifts during puberty, pregnancy, and menopause can ramp up sweat production significantly. Carrying extra weight also affects hormone levels in ways that increase sweating. Some people simply have more active sweat glands, and if sweating runs in your family, you’re more likely to deal with it too.
Certain medical conditions amplify the problem. Kidney or liver disease can cause toxins to build up in the body, sometimes producing a bleach-like odor through the skin. And a condition called plantar hyperhidrosis, where the feet sweat excessively regardless of temperature or activity, affects a meaningful number of people. If your feet sweat heavily on both sides, multiple times a week, and it started before age 25, that pattern points toward hyperhidrosis rather than ordinary sweating.
Daily Washing Makes the Biggest Difference
The CDC recommends washing your feet every day and drying them completely. That sounds obvious, but most people just let soapy water run over their feet in the shower and call it done. To actually reduce bacterial load, you need to scrub between each toe with a washcloth. The spaces between your toes stay warm and damp all day, creating the ideal environment for odor-causing bacteria to thrive.
Drying is just as important as washing. Towel off thoroughly, paying extra attention to the skin between your toes. Putting socks on damp feet traps moisture and undoes most of the benefit of washing in the first place. If your feet tend to stay moist, give them a few minutes of air exposure before putting on socks and shoes.
Dead skin is another factor. Bacteria feed on dead skin cells along with sweat, so exfoliating with a pumice stone or foot scrub at least once a week removes some of their food supply.
Choose the Right Socks and Shoes
Sock material matters more than most people realize. Merino wool is the best widely available option for odor control. It naturally resists bacterial growth and manages moisture well. Synthetic blends made from engineered polyester (like CoolMax) wick moisture faster and dry more quickly than wool, but they don’t control odor as effectively. Cotton is the worst choice for sweaty feet because it absorbs moisture and holds it against your skin.
Change your socks at least once a day. If your feet sweat heavily, keeping a fresh pair in your bag for a midday change can make a noticeable difference. The same principle applies to shoes: rotating between two or more pairs gives each one at least 24 hours to dry out completely between wears. Bacteria multiply in damp environments, and a shoe that never fully dries becomes a breeding ground.
When possible, choose shoes made from breathable materials like leather or canvas over synthetic uppers. Going barefoot or wearing open-toed shoes at home lets your feet air out and reduces the hours they spend in an enclosed, humid environment.
Soaks That Actually Help
Two types of foot soaks have enough support to be worth trying. A vinegar soak uses a ratio of two parts warm water to one part vinegar (white or apple cider both work). Soak for 15 to 20 minutes, once a week. The acidity creates an environment that’s hostile to odor-producing bacteria.
An Epsom salt soak calls for half a cup of Epsom salt dissolved in a tub of warm water. Soak for 10 to 20 minutes. Salt helps pull moisture from the skin and can reduce bacterial activity on the surface. With either method, dry your feet completely afterward.
Antiperspirants for Your Feet
The same aluminum-based antiperspirants you use under your arms work on feet too. Over-the-counter foot antiperspirants or spray deodorants are a good starting point. Apply them to clean, dry feet before bed, since your sweat glands are least active during sleep. This gives the aluminum ions time to work into the sweat glands, which takes about six to eight hours. In the morning, wash your feet normally.
If regular antiperspirants aren’t enough, prescription-strength formulas containing higher concentrations of aluminum chloride are available. For feet specifically, concentrations of 30% or higher are sometimes used, compared to the 10% to 15% typically prescribed for underarms. You apply these nightly until you notice improvement, then gradually space out applications. If that still isn’t cutting it, wrapping the feet in plastic wrap after application (a technique called occlusion) can increase effectiveness by keeping the product in contact with the skin.
When Foot Odor Signals Something Else
Persistent foot odor that doesn’t respond to hygiene changes sometimes points to a bacterial skin infection called erythrasma. It’s caused by a different type of bacteria than ordinary foot odor and typically shows up as scaling, cracking, and skin breakdown between the last two toes. It’s commonly mistaken for a fungal infection like athlete’s foot, but doctors can distinguish it easily because erythrasma-infected skin glows coral-red under ultraviolet light.
Hyperhidrosis is worth investigating if your feet sweat so heavily that it interferes with daily life. The diagnostic criteria include excessive sweating lasting more than six months, a bilateral and roughly symmetrical pattern, occurrence at least twice a week, and sweating that stops during sleep. Treatment options beyond antiperspirants exist, including procedures that target the sweat glands directly.
