Your best natural defenses against the flu come down to a handful of everyday habits: sleeping enough, moving your body, eating certain nutrients, and controlling the air around you. None of these replace a flu shot, but they meaningfully reduce your chances of getting sick and can shorten symptoms if a virus does break through. Here’s what actually works, based on the strongest evidence available.
Sleep Is Your Immune System’s Foundation
Your immune system does its most critical work while you sleep. Regulatory T cells, the cells that coordinate your body’s defense response, reach their highest activity during nighttime sleep. When researchers kept people awake through the night, those regulatory cells lost their rhythm entirely and failed to suppress threats at normal levels.
