Going to bed on an empty stomach, or after a dinner heavy in simple carbohydrates, can cause your blood sugar to dip too low by early morning. Even in people without diabetes, this drop can be enough to trigger a migraine. The fix is straightforward: eat a small bedtime snack that pairs a slow-digesting carbohydrate with protein. Yogurt with granola, whole-grain crackers with cheese, or half a sandwich with lean protein all work well. The protein slows carbohydrate absorption and keeps your blood sugar steadier through the night.

Address Nighttime Jaw Clenching
Sleep bruxism, the unconscious grinding or clenching of your teeth during sleep, is one of the most overlooked morning migraine triggers. Fix Your Sleep Position and Pillow
Neck strain from poor sleep positioning can trigger headaches through the cervical spine, and these cervicogenic headaches often overlap with or worsen migraines. Research on pillow types and sleep positions offers some clear guidance. Side sleeping is the most common position and appears to be protective against waking neck pain. If you’re taking pain relievers or triptans frequently to manage migraines, the medications themselves can start causing a rebound pattern where headaches, often morning headaches, become more frequent over time. The International Headache Society defines medication overuse headache as headaches occurring 15 or more days per month in someone who has been regularly using acute headache medication for more than three months. The threshold varies by medication type: for triptans and combination painkillers, using them on 10 or more days per month qualifies. If your morning migraines have been gradually increasing in frequency and you’ve been taking more medication to keep up, this cycle may be the primary problem. Breaking the pattern typically requires a supervised withdrawal period where headaches temporarily worsen before improving. It’s uncomfortable but often transformative, with many people seeing their migraine frequency drop significantly within a few weeks of stopping the overuse.
Sleep Consistency Matters More Than Duration
Irregular sleep schedules are a well-established migraine trigger. Sleeping in on weekends, staying up significantly later than usual, or having erratic wake times can disrupt your circadian rhythm enough to provoke a migraine. The goal isn’t necessarily more sleep but rather consistent sleep. Try to keep your wake time within a 30-minute window every day, including weekends. Morning migraines rarely have a single cause, so the most effective approach is layering several of these strategies at once.
