How to Recycle Polypropylene the Right Way

How to Identify Polypropylene

Flip the container over and look for a small triangle made of arrows with the number 5 inside. That’s the resin identification code for polypropylene. Common #5 items include yogurt cups, butter tubs, deli containers, ketchup bottles, medicine bottles, bottle caps, and takeout containers. PP also shows up in non-packaging products like plastic furniture, storage bins, luggage, and toys, though these rigid goods are rarely accepted in curbside bins.

Check What Your Program Accepts

Not all #5 items are treated equally. PP bottles, jugs, and jars have the widest acceptance, available to roughly three-quarters of U.S. households. PP tubs and other containers (think hummus or sour cream tubs) are accepted by about 59% of programs. PP cups lag behind at 47%. The shape matters because sorting machines at recycling facilities are calibrated differently for bottles versus flat or round containers.

Your municipality’s website or waste hauler will list exactly which plastic numbers and formats they take. If your curbside program doesn’t accept #5 plastics, check whether your region has a drop-off center that takes mixed plastics. Mail-in programs that once collected polypropylene, like Preserve’s Gimme 5 program, have largely shut down due to the impracticality of shipping small quantities of plastic long distances.

How to Prepare Containers for the Bin

Clean containers don’t need to be spotless, but they do need to be free of food. Scrape out any solid residue with a spatula, then give the container a quick rinse. For greasy items like butter tubs or oily takeout containers, a shake with warm soapy water works well. Let everything air dry before putting it in the bin. Stacking wet containers can trap moisture and grow mold, which contaminates other recyclables in the batch.

For bottles, crush them to push out the air and screw the cap back on. Small loose caps fall through the gaps in sorting screens and end up in the trash. For tubs, check whether the snap-on lid has its own #5 marking. If it matches, leave it on. If the lid is a different material or has no code, separate it. Some programs still ask you to remove all caps, so check your local rules if you’re unsure.

You generally don’t need to peel off paper or plastic labels. Recycling facilities run materials through a wash that strips them off. The one exception is full-body shrink sleeves, the plastic film that wraps an entire bottle. These sleeves confuse the optical sensors that sort plastics by type, causing the bottle to land in the wrong pile. If you can peel a shrink sleeve off, do it.

What Happens After Collection

At a materials recovery facility, optical sorters and manual workers separate polypropylene from other plastics. The sorted PP gets shredded into flakes, washed to remove residual food and adhesive, dried, then melted and formed into small pellets. These pellets become the raw material for new products like storage containers, automotive parts, or garden furniture.

This process, called mechanical recycling, works best with clean, single-material items. Multilayer packaging (like chip bags or squeezable pouches that combine PP with other materials) can’t be mechanically recycled because the layers can’t be separated. Containers with heavy filler materials like talc or calcium carbonate also complicate the process.

A newer approach called chemical recycling breaks polypropylene down into its chemical building blocks by dissolving it in a hydrocarbon solvent and using a catalyst to decompose it. This method can handle contaminated or mixed plastics that mechanical recycling can’t, and it produces fuel-grade or chemical-grade raw materials. It’s not yet widely available at commercial scale, but it represents a potential path for the PP waste that currently gets landfilled.

Why Polypropylene Is Harder to Recycle Than PET

If you’ve wondered why #1 plastic (PET, the stuff water bottles are made from) gets recycled everywhere while #5 lags behind, contamination is a big reason. Polypropylene absorbs contaminants from food more readily than PET does and is less resistant to heat degradation. When researchers subjected PP to a recycling simulation, they identified 45 different volatile compounds that had migrated into the plastic from its previous contents. Washing helps, but it can’t fully decontaminate the material.

This is why recycled polypropylene is generally not approved for direct food contact by agencies like the FDA. Each trip through the recycling process also shortens the polymer chains and weakens the material’s mechanical properties, meaning recycled PP often gets “downcycled” into lower-value products rather than turned back into food containers. The high temperatures and shear forces of melting and re-forming the plastic accelerate this degradation, and any residual contaminants speed it up further.

The Environmental Payoff

Despite these challenges, recycling polypropylene delivers significant environmental benefits. Producing recycled PP pellets uses 88% less energy than making virgin PP from petroleum. The carbon footprint drops by 71%. In concrete terms, virgin PP requires about 74 megajoules of energy per kilogram to produce, while recycled PP needs just under 9. That’s a threefold difference in energy expenditure.

Those savings only materialize when the PP actually gets recycled rather than landfilled, which is why proper sorting and preparation matter. Contaminated or improperly sorted items get pulled from the recycling stream and sent to landfill, wasting both the material and the energy spent collecting and transporting it.

Making Your PP More Likely to Get Recycled

Beyond rinsing and sorting, a few choices improve the odds that your polypropylene actually completes the recycling loop. Choose PP containers that are a single color (white or clear is best) over heavily pigmented ones, since color sorting is one of the steps recyclers use to produce consistent output. Avoid buying products in multilayer or multi-material packaging when a simpler alternative exists. And if a container has a full-body shrink sleeve, peel it off before recycling.

The Association of Plastic Recyclers maintains design guidelines that rate packaging features as “preferred,” “detrimental,” or “renders package non-recyclable.” A package is only truly recyclable if it meets design standards, consumers have access to collection, the program accepts it, and there’s a market for the recycled resin. When all four conditions are met, your rinsed yogurt cup has a real shot at becoming something new.
