How to Reduce Plaque on Teeth: Daily Habits That Help

Plaque is a sticky film of bacteria that forms on your teeth within hours of brushing, and the most effective way to reduce it is a combination of proper brushing technique, cleaning between your teeth daily, and using the right products. Left undisturbed, plaque hardens into tarite (calculus) that only a dental professional can remove. The good news: with consistent daily habits, you can keep plaque levels low enough to prevent both cavities and gum disease.

How Plaque Forms and Why Speed Matters

Within seconds of cleaning your teeth, a thin protein film from your saliva coats every surface. This layer, called the pellicle, is harmless on its own, but it acts as a landing pad for bacteria. Early colonizers, mostly harmless species, attach first. Over hours, more complex and potentially damaging species join, building a structured community called a biofilm.

Every time you eat or drink something containing sugar, the bacteria in this biofilm produce acid for at least five minutes. That acid pulls minerals out of your enamel. The longer plaque sits undisturbed, the thicker and more organized it becomes, and the harder it is to remove with a toothbrush alone. This is why brushing twice a day works: you’re disrupting the biofilm before it matures and before it can mineralize into tartar.

Brushing Technique Matters More Than You Think

Two minutes, twice a day, angling your bristles toward the gumline at roughly 45 degrees. That’s the baseline. But the tool you use also makes a difference. A large Cochrane review found that electric toothbrushes with oscillating-rotating heads removed about 21% more plaque than manual brushes over three months or longer, and reduced gum inflammation by about 11%. In the short term, the advantage was smaller (around 11% more plaque removal), but it grew with continued use.

If you prefer a manual brush, you can absolutely keep plaque under control. The key is being thorough: brushing the outer, inner, and chewing surfaces of every tooth, spending equal time on the back molars you can’t see, and replacing your brush every three to four months when the bristles start to splay. A worn brush loses its ability to reach into the gum margin where plaque accumulates fastest.

Cleaning Between Your Teeth

Your toothbrush can’t reach the tight spaces between teeth, which is where gum disease typically starts. This is where interdental cleaning comes in, and the evidence strongly favors interdental brushes over traditional string floss for most people.

A 2015 review in the Journal of Clinical Periodontology found that the evidence supporting floss for reducing gum inflammation was weak, with no convincing effect on plaque across the studies reviewed. Interdental brushes, by contrast, had moderate evidence for reducing both plaque and gum inflammation. A 2018 meta-analysis ranked interdental brushes as the most likely “best” option for reducing gum inflammation, while floss ranked near zero probability of being the best method. Multiple head-to-head trials have shown interdental brushes produce lower plaque scores in the spaces between teeth compared to floss.

The catch is that interdental brushes need enough space to fit between your teeth. If your teeth are tightly spaced, floss or thin interdental picks may be your only option, and using floss is still far better than skipping interdental cleaning entirely. For most adults, especially those with any gum recession or naturally wider gaps, an interdental brush in the right size will remove more plaque with less effort.

Choosing the Right Toothpaste

All fluoride toothpastes help protect against cavities, but the type of fluoride matters if plaque reduction is your goal. Stannous fluoride has a significant advantage over the more common sodium fluoride: it’s antimicrobial. It kills mouth bacteria by interfering with their metabolic processes, which means less acid production overall. Studies show that when you use stannous fluoride, the pH in your mouth doesn’t drop as low after eating and recovers faster.

Another ingredient worth looking for is arginine, an amino acid now included in some cavity-prevention toothpastes. Oral bacteria break down arginine into ammonia, which raises the pH of plaque and makes the environment less hospitable to acid-producing species. Lab research from the American Society for Microbiology found that biofilms treated with 1.5% arginine toothpaste maintained a significantly higher pH than those treated with non-arginine toothpaste, and showed lower counts of cavity-causing bacteria like streptococci and lactobacilli.

Mouthwash as a Backup, Not a Substitute

An antiseptic mouthwash can meaningfully reduce plaque when used alongside brushing and interdental cleaning. It won’t replace mechanical cleaning, but it reaches surfaces you may have missed. Essential oil mouthwashes (the kind with thymol, eucalyptol, menthol, and methyl salicylate) have the strongest long-term evidence. A review of studies with at least six months of daily use found that essential oil mouthwash reduced plaque by about 32% and gum inflammation by about 24% compared to a placebo rinse.

These essential oil rinses also outperformed another common antiseptic ingredient (cetylpyridinium chloride) in head-to-head comparisons, producing significantly lower plaque levels across multiple trials. If you find alcohol-based rinses too harsh, alcohol-free versions of essential oil mouthwashes are widely available and appear to work similarly.

Oil Pulling: Does It Actually Work?

Swishing coconut oil in your mouth for 10 to 20 minutes has become a popular natural approach to oral care, and the clinical evidence is more positive than you might expect. A randomized crossover trial compared coconut oil pulling to chlorhexidine, which is the gold-standard prescription mouthwash used in dentistry. The two methods produced nearly identical plaque index scores (1.67 for oil pulling versus 1.61 for chlorhexidine), with no significant differences in gum inflammation or bleeding. Oil pulling actually caused less tooth staining than chlorhexidine.

That said, this was a short-term study with a small group of 29 volunteers. Oil pulling takes considerably more time than swishing mouthwash for 30 seconds, so it’s a question of whether you’re willing to commit to it daily. It’s a reasonable addition to your routine, but not a reason to skip brushing or interdental cleaning.

What Professional Cleanings Actually Do

No matter how diligent your home care is, some plaque inevitably hardens into tartar in hard-to-reach spots. Tartar can’t be brushed or flossed away. A professional cleaning uses either manual instruments (scalers and curettes) or ultrasonic devices to remove it.

Research comparing the two methods shows they’re equally effective at improving all the key measures: pocket depth, plaque scores, gum inflammation, and bleeding. The practical differences are about comfort. Ultrasonic scaling tends to cause less pain and less damage to the root surface, and newer micro-ultrasonic tips can reach deep pockets, root grooves, and areas between the roots of molars more easily than hand instruments. Manual scaling, on the other hand, can sometimes remove more material in deeper pockets, though it also carries a small risk of removing too much of the root surface if done aggressively.

For most people, a professional cleaning every six months is enough to catch what home care misses. If you have active gum disease or tend to build up tartar quickly, your dentist may recommend more frequent visits.

Daily Habits That Keep Plaque Low

Beyond brushing and flossing, a few simple habits reduce the amount of plaque your mouth produces in the first place:

  • Limit snacking frequency. Every time you eat, bacteria produce acid for several minutes. Three meals with defined breaks give your saliva time to neutralize that acid and remineralize your enamel. Constant grazing keeps plaque bacteria active all day.
  • Drink water after meals. Rinsing with plain water helps wash away food particles and dilute the acid environment that plaque thrives in.
  • Chew sugar-free gum. Chewing stimulates saliva flow, which is your mouth’s natural defense against plaque acids. Gum sweetened with xylitol may offer an extra benefit, since xylitol interferes with the growth of cavity-causing bacteria.
  • Don’t skip nighttime brushing. Saliva flow drops dramatically while you sleep, which means plaque bacteria can work undisturbed for hours. Brushing before bed is the single most important session of the day.

The most effective plaque control routine combines an electric or well-used manual toothbrush with a stannous fluoride toothpaste, interdental brushes sized to fit your spaces, and an essential oil mouthwash. None of these steps are complicated on their own. The challenge is consistency, because plaque starts forming again within hours of every cleaning.
