How to Reduce Swelling in Your Feet at Home

Swollen feet happen when fluid leaks out of tiny blood vessels and pools in the tissue beneath your skin faster than your lymphatic system can drain it away. The good news: most cases respond well to simple strategies you can start right now. Elevation, movement, compression, and dietary changes can all make a noticeable difference.

Why Your Feet Swell in the First Place

Your body constantly balances fluid between your bloodstream and the surrounding tissue. Gravity pulls fluid downward throughout the day, and your veins and lymphatic vessels work against that pull to move it back up. When you sit or stand for long stretches, that system falls behind. Fluid accumulates in the interstitial space, the area between your cells, and your feet and ankles puff up.

Several things tip the balance further: high sodium intake causes your body to hold onto extra water, heart or kidney problems increase pressure in your veins, pregnancy adds blood volume and hormonal shifts, and certain medications (blood pressure drugs, steroids, some anti-inflammatories) can trigger retention. Even hot weather dilates blood vessels enough to let more fluid seep into surrounding tissue. Understanding the cause helps you choose the right fix.

Elevate Your Feet Above Your Heart

Elevation is the fastest way to get relief. Lie down and prop your feet on pillows, a cushion, or the arm of a couch so they sit above the level of your heart. This reverses gravity’s effect and lets fluid drain back toward your core through your veins and lymph channels. Aim for about 15 minutes per session, three to four times a day. You’ll often notice your shoes fitting more comfortably after just one session, though consistent daily elevation works best for persistent swelling.

Move Your Ankles and Calves

Your calf muscles act as a pump for your veins. Every time they contract, they squeeze blood upward toward your heart. When you’re sitting still for hours, that pump shuts off and fluid stagnates. Simple ankle pumps reactivate it: point your toes toward your knees, then away from you, alternating back and forth for two to three minutes. Repeat this two to three times per hour when you’re sitting or lying down for extended periods.

Walking is even more effective because it engages your entire lower leg. If you can’t walk easily, even wiggling your toes, rotating your ankles in circles, or doing seated calf raises (lifting your heels off the floor) keeps fluid moving.

Break Up Long Periods of Sitting or Standing

A 2022 study compared continuous sitting, continuous standing, and alternating between the two every minute over 20-minute periods. Continuous sitting caused the most fluid accumulation in the lower legs, while the alternating group fared the best. The takeaway is practical: if your job keeps you in a chair, stand up briefly every 20 to 30 minutes. If you stand all day, sit down periodically or shift your weight and walk in place. Even short transitions between positions are enough to prevent significant pooling.

Try Compression Socks or Stockings

Compression garments apply graduated pressure, tightest at the ankle and looser toward the knee, to help push fluid upward and prevent it from accumulating. They come in different pressure levels measured in millimeters of mercury (mmHg):

  • 15 to 20 mmHg: Mild support, good for occasional swelling from travel, long workdays, or early signs of puffiness.
  • 20 to 30 mmHg: Moderate support, commonly recommended for post-injury swelling, varicose veins, or recurring edema.
  • 30 to 40 mmHg: Firm support, typically used for more persistent swelling or after medical treatment for lymphatic conditions.

For everyday swelling, 15 to 20 mmHg stockings are a good starting point and are available without a prescription. Put them on in the morning before swelling builds, since they’re much harder to pull on over already-puffy feet. If that level doesn’t provide enough relief, stepping up to 20 to 30 mmHg is the next move.

Cut Back on Sodium

Sodium makes your body retain water. The more salt you eat, the more fluid your kidneys hold onto, and the more likely that extra fluid is to settle in your feet by the end of the day. Keeping sodium under 2,000 to 3,000 milligrams daily helps most people manage fluid balance. For reference, a single fast-food meal can contain 1,500 mg or more.

The biggest sodium sources are often invisible: canned soups, deli meats, frozen meals, soy sauce, bread, and restaurant food. Cooking at home and skipping the salt shaker at the table are two of the simplest changes. Read nutrition labels and look for options under 600 mg per serving for packaged foods. Most people notice a difference in swelling within a few days of reducing their intake.

Stay Well Hydrated

It sounds counterintuitive, but drinking more water can actually reduce swelling. When you’re dehydrated, your body responds by holding onto more fluid as a protective measure. Staying well hydrated signals your kidneys that it’s safe to release excess water and sodium. There’s no magic number, but consistent water intake throughout the day, rather than large amounts all at once, keeps the system running smoothly. If your urine is pale yellow, you’re generally on track.

Cool Water Soaks

Soaking swollen feet in cool water can provide temporary relief by constricting blood vessels and reducing the flow of fluid into surrounding tissue. Some people add Epsom salt to the soak, and while users frequently report that the magnesium helps with swelling and soreness, there isn’t strong scientific evidence confirming this works beyond the cooling effect itself. A 15 to 20 minute soak in comfortably cool (not ice-cold) water is a low-risk option that can feel good and offer short-term improvement, even if the main benefit is the temperature rather than the salt.

When Swelling Signals Something Serious

Most foot swelling is harmless and responds to the strategies above. But certain patterns warrant prompt medical attention. Swelling in only one leg, especially with pain, warmth, cramping in the calf, or skin that turns red or purple, can indicate a deep vein thrombosis (a blood clot in a deep vein). DVT sometimes causes no symptoms at all, which makes any sudden one-sided swelling worth checking out.

If swelling comes with sudden shortness of breath, chest pain that worsens when you breathe or cough, a rapid pulse, dizziness, or coughing up blood, those are signs of a pulmonary embolism, a clot that has traveled to the lungs. That’s a medical emergency.

Swelling that leaves a visible dent when you press your finger into it (called pitting edema), worsens over weeks, or doesn’t improve with elevation and movement may point to heart, kidney, or liver problems that need evaluation. Swelling that appears suddenly during pregnancy alongside headaches or vision changes also requires immediate attention.
