Body aches during illness respond best to a combination of over-the-counter pain relievers, consistent hydration, warmth, and sleep. No single remedy eliminates the soreness entirely, but layering several approaches together can make a meaningful difference in how you feel while your body fights off the infection.
Why Being Sick Makes Your Body Ache
The aches you feel during a cold, flu, or other viral illness aren’t caused by the virus directly damaging your muscles. They’re caused by your own immune system. When your body detects a pathogen, immune cells release inflammatory signaling molecules, primarily IL-1, IL-6, and TNF-alpha. These chemicals trigger the inflammatory cascade that produces fever, chills, headache, and that deep, all-over muscle soreness. The pain is essentially a side effect of your immune system doing its job.
Understanding this matters because it shapes which remedies actually help. Anything that reduces inflammation or supports your immune system’s ability to finish the fight faster will shorten the window of discomfort.
Over-the-Counter Pain Relievers
For body aches specifically, ibuprofen tends to work better than acetaminophen because it directly reduces inflammation, which is the root cause of the pain. Acetaminophen relieves pain and lowers fever but doesn’t target inflammation. If your main complaint is aching muscles and joints, ibuprofen is the stronger choice. If fever is your bigger concern, either one works.
For ibuprofen, adults can take 200 to 400 milligrams every four to six hours as needed, up to 1,200 milligrams in 24 hours. For acetaminophen, the safe ceiling is 3,000 to 4,000 milligrams per day depending on the product formulation, and exceeding that increases the risk of liver damage. Be especially careful with acetaminophen because it’s hidden in many combination cold and flu products, so you can accidentally double up.
Ibuprofen and other anti-inflammatory pain relievers carry risks for people with heart disease, stomach ulcers, or kidney problems. The cardiovascular risk applies even to people without existing heart disease, but it’s greater for those who do have it. If any of those apply to you, acetaminophen is the safer option.
Stay Hydrated With Electrolytes
Dehydration makes body aches worse, and fever, sweating, vomiting, and diarrhea all drain fluids and electrolytes faster than normal. When levels of potassium and magnesium drop, your muscles are more prone to cramping, spasms, and weakness on top of the inflammatory soreness you’re already dealing with. Potassium supports muscle and nerve function. Magnesium does the same. Losing either one compounds the pain.
Water alone doesn’t replace these minerals. Broth, diluted sports drinks, coconut water, or oral rehydration solutions all provide electrolytes along with fluid. Sipping consistently throughout the day works better than forcing large amounts at once, especially if nausea is an issue. If you’re vomiting or have diarrhea, electrolyte replacement becomes especially important because those are the fastest routes to imbalance.
Use Warmth Strategically
A warm bath, heating pad, or warm compress can ease muscle soreness by improving blood flow to tight, aching areas. If you prefer a bath, the warm water itself is doing the work. Epsom salts are widely recommended, but there’s no well-controlled clinical evidence that magnesium absorbs through the skin in meaningful amounts during a soak. Any relief you feel from an Epsom salt bath is most likely from the warm water improving circulation and being generally soothing, not from the magnesium sulfate itself.
A heating pad placed on your back, shoulders, or legs for 15 to 20 minutes at a time offers similar benefits without the effort of getting in and out of a tub when you’re already feeling miserable. Just avoid falling asleep on a heating pad, as prolonged direct heat can burn skin.
Prioritize Sleep
Sleep is one of the most effective things you can do for body aches, and the connection is more direct than most people realize. In brain imaging studies, sleep deprivation caused a 120% increase in activity in the brain region that interprets pain intensity. At the same time, activity dropped 60% to 90% in the brain areas responsible for dampening pain perception. The result: your pain threshold drops, and the same level of inflammation feels significantly worse.
This means poor sleep doesn’t just slow recovery. It literally amplifies how much your body aches feel like they hurt. Even subtle disruptions, like waking up repeatedly during the night, are linked to increased pain the next day. When you’re sick, the best thing you can do is create conditions for uninterrupted sleep: a dark room, comfortable temperature, and pain relievers timed so they’re active through the night.
Gentle Movement and Stretching
When every muscle aches, the instinct is to stay completely still. Light, gentle movement can actually help by promoting circulation and preventing the additional stiffness that comes from lying in one position for hours. This doesn’t mean exercise. It means slowly stretching your arms overhead, rolling your shoulders, or walking to the kitchen and back. The goal is to keep blood flowing without taxing your body further.
If you have a fever over 101°F or feel dizzy when you stand, skip this and rest flat. Movement only helps when your body can handle it without added strain.
Layer Your Remedies
The most effective approach combines several of these strategies at once. Take an anti-inflammatory pain reliever, drink electrolyte-containing fluids throughout the day, apply warmth to your most painful areas, and protect your sleep. Each one addresses a slightly different piece of the problem: medication reduces the inflammatory chemicals causing the pain, hydration prevents electrolyte-driven cramping, warmth improves local blood flow, and sleep keeps your brain’s pain-dampening systems functional.
Most viral body aches peak within the first two to three days of illness and improve as fever breaks and the immune response winds down. If your aches are getting worse after several days instead of better, or if you develop a stiff neck along with fever, confusion, light sensitivity, nausea, or a rash of small round spots, that combination can signal meningitis and requires emergency care.
