Most gas leaves your body on its own through burping or flatulence, and the average person passes gas 14 to 23 times a day. When gas feels trapped or painful, though, you can speed things along with simple physical movements, dietary changes, and over-the-counter options that work within minutes to hours.
Why Gas Builds Up
Gas in your digestive tract comes from two sources. The first is swallowed air, which accounts for most of the oxygen and nitrogen in your gut. You swallow small amounts of air every time you eat, drink, or even talk. The second source is bacterial fermentation in your large intestine. When certain carbohydrates (sugars, starches, and fiber) aren’t fully digested or absorbed in the small intestine, they pass into the colon, where billions of harmless bacteria break them down. This process produces hydrogen, carbon dioxide, and in about one-third of people, methane.
Most of this gas is actually odorless. The smell comes from tiny amounts of sulfur-containing gases released by bacteria in the colon. So the volume of gas you feel and the smell are driven by two different things, which is why some foods make you bloated without much odor and others produce the opposite effect.
Physical Movements That Help Gas Pass
When gas feels stuck, gentle movement and specific body positions can relax the muscles around your abdomen, hips, and lower back, helping gas move through your digestive tract and out. Even a short walk can make a noticeable difference. Beyond walking, several yoga-style poses work particularly well because they apply gentle pressure to the abdomen or open up the hips.
Knee-to-chest pose: Lie on your back, bring both knees up, and pull your thighs toward your chest while tucking your chin down. This compresses the abdomen and is sometimes called the “wind-relieving pose” for good reason.
Child’s pose: Kneel on the floor, then sit back onto your heels while stretching your arms forward and resting your forehead on the ground. Your torso rests on your thighs, creating gentle abdominal pressure.
Happy baby pose: Lie on your back, lift your knees to the sides of your body, point the soles of your feet toward the ceiling, and grab your feet with your hands. Gently rocking side to side can provide additional relief.
Deep squats: Stand with feet shoulder-width apart, then lower into a squat. This position opens the hips and relaxes the pelvic floor, making it easier to release gas.
You don’t need to hold these positions for long. Even 30 to 60 seconds in each pose, repeated a few times, can help shift trapped gas.
Foods That Cause the Most Gas
The biggest gas producers are fermentable carbohydrates, sometimes grouped under the acronym FODMAPs. These are short-chain sugars that your small intestine absorbs poorly, leaving them for colon bacteria to feast on. Common high-FODMAP foods include beans, lentils, onions, garlic, wheat, certain dairy products, apples, pears, and cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, cabbage, and Brussels sprouts. Carbonated drinks add gas directly by introducing carbon dioxide into your stomach.
You don’t need to avoid all of these permanently. Keeping a simple food diary for a week or two can help you identify which specific foods cause you the most trouble. Many people find they tolerate some high-FODMAP foods well while reacting strongly to others. Cooking vegetables thoroughly also breaks down some of the fibers that bacteria ferment, which can reduce gas compared to eating them raw.
Eating Habits That Reduce Swallowed Air
A surprising amount of bloating comes not from what you eat but from how you eat. Swallowing excess air is one of the top causes of upper digestive gas, and several everyday habits make it worse: eating too fast, talking while chewing, chewing gum, sucking on hard candy, drinking through a straw, and smoking.
The fixes are straightforward. Chew each bite thoroughly and swallow before taking the next one. Sip drinks from a glass rather than through a straw. Save conversation for between bites or after the meal. If you regularly chew gum, cutting back is one of the fastest ways to reduce the amount of air reaching your stomach. These changes alone can noticeably reduce burping and upper abdominal bloating within days.
Over-the-Counter Relief
Simethicone is the most widely used gas relief medication and the active ingredient in products like Gas-X. It works by breaking large gas bubbles in your gut into smaller ones, which are easier for your body to move along and expel. Adults typically take 40 to 125 mg after meals and at bedtime, up to a maximum of 500 mg per day. It acts quickly, usually within 15 to 30 minutes, and has very few side effects because it isn’t absorbed into your bloodstream.
Peppermint oil is another option with real evidence behind it. It relaxes the smooth muscle lining your intestines, likely by blocking calcium channels in the gut wall. This relaxation can ease cramping and help gas pass more freely. Enteric-coated peppermint oil capsules are the preferred form because they dissolve in the intestine rather than the stomach. One thing to be aware of: peppermint oil also relaxes the valve between your esophagus and stomach, so it can worsen heartburn or acid reflux in some people.
Activated charcoal is marketed for gas and bloating, but the evidence is mixed at best. While it’s proven effective in emergency departments for certain poisoning cases, its ability to relieve everyday gas hasn’t been reliably demonstrated. Regular use can cause constipation and reduce how well your body absorbs nutrients. The Cleveland Clinic recommends simethicone or peppermint oil over charcoal for gas relief.
When Gas Signals Something Else
Occasional gas, even when uncomfortable, is normal. But gas that won’t go away, keeps getting worse, or is severe enough to disrupt your daily routine deserves medical attention. The same is true if gas comes alongside other symptoms: blood in your stool, unexplained weight loss, persistent nausea or vomiting, ongoing diarrhea or constipation, or a noticeable change in the consistency of your stools. Prolonged abdominal pain or any chest pain calls for immediate care, since these can sometimes be mistaken for gas when the cause is something more serious.
