How to Remove Mucus From Your Lungs Naturally

Your lungs have a built-in cleaning system that moves mucus upward and out of your airways around the clock. When illness, allergies, or irritation cause mucus to build up faster than your body can clear it, you can speed the process along with breathing techniques, body positioning, hydration, and a few other simple approaches. Most of these methods work by either thinning the mucus so it moves more easily or by using gravity and controlled airflow to push it toward your throat where you can cough it out.

How Your Lungs Clear Mucus on Their Own

The inside of your airways is lined with millions of tiny hair-like structures called cilia. These cilia beat in coordinated waves, pushing a thin blanket of mucus upward from the deep lung toward the throat. The tips of these cilia reach speeds of about 200 micrometers per second during each stroke, which sounds small but adds up across billions of synchronized beats. A thin layer of watery fluid sits beneath the mucus and acts as a lubricant, keeping everything gliding smoothly.

How well this system works depends heavily on how thick or thin the mucus is. When mucus becomes dehydrated or overconcentrated, it gets stiff and sticky, making it harder for cilia to push. The cilia have to strain against thicker mucus, and transport slows down. This is why many of the natural approaches below focus on keeping mucus hydrated and loose enough for your cilia to do their job.

Stay Well Hydrated

The watery component of airway mucus comes from fluid that your airway lining actively transports to the surface. Your body constantly adjusts the balance of salt and water in that fluid layer to keep mucus at the right consistency. When you’re dehydrated overall, there’s less fluid available for this process, and mucus can become thicker and harder to move.

Drinking enough water won’t magically flush mucus out of your lungs, but staying well hydrated gives your airways the raw material they need to keep mucus at a consistency your cilia can handle. Warm liquids like tea, broth, or warm water with honey can feel especially soothing because the warmth may help loosen secretions in the throat and upper airways.

Use Steam to Loosen Congestion

Breathing in warm, moist air helps mucus move more effectively through your nasal passages and upper airways. In one study of people with chronic sinus problems, steam inhalation improved nasal mucus clearance in about 72% of patients within an hour, and that number rose to over 83% after 24 hours. Participants also reported significant relief from their symptoms.

The simplest method is to breathe over a bowl of hot water with a towel draped over your head, or to sit in a steamy bathroom with the shower running. Sessions of 10 to 15 minutes are typical. Steam primarily helps the nose and upper airways rather than deep in the lungs, but since post-nasal drip and upper airway congestion often contribute to the sensation of mucus buildup, the relief can be substantial.

Controlled Breathing Techniques

One of the most effective ways to move mucus from deep in the lungs is a method called the Active Cycle of Breathing Technique. It alternates between relaxed breathing, deep breaths, and a specific kind of forced exhale called a “huff.” The sequence works by first opening and relaxing the airways, then getting air behind trapped mucus, and finally using controlled bursts of airflow to push it up and out.

The cycle has three phases:

Chest Percussion and Vibration

You’ve probably seen someone get their back patted when they’re coughing. Chest percussion is the clinical version of that instinct. A helper cups their hands (fingers together, palms curved like they’re scooping water) and rhythmically claps on your chest or back over the congested area. The vibrations travel through the chest wall and help shake mucus loose from airway walls so it can be moved by cilia or coughing.

The rhythm should be steady and consistent, like tapping a drum. It shouldn’t hurt. One important safety rule: never percuss below the rib cage or on the lower back, as this can damage organs underneath. Percussion works best when combined with postural drainage, doing it while you’re already positioned to let gravity assist.

When Mucus Is a Warning Sign

Most mucus buildup during a cold or allergy flare is temporary and harmless. But certain changes deserve attention. Red or blood-streaked mucus warrants prompt medical evaluation, typically with imaging to rule out serious causes. Foul-smelling or foul-tasting mucus that makes you recoil is a common sign of bacterial pneumonia.
