When glucose levels rise above a certain threshold, the kidneys can no longer reabsorb all of it during filtration, and the excess spills into your urine. Staying well hydrated supports this process by keeping urine production steady and helping the kidneys flush out that surplus glucose more efficiently.

If blood sugar is chronically elevated, the body actually increases urine output on its own because water gets drawn into the kidney’s filtrate by the extra glucose.
