Once gum tissue has receded, it does not grow back on its own. The cells in your gums actually release proteins that inhibit bone and tissue from reforming, which is why recession is permanent without professional treatment. The good news: several proven procedures can restore lost gum tissue, and the right approach depends on how far the recession has progressed.
Why Gums Don’t Grow Back Naturally
Gum recession happens when the tissue surrounding your teeth pulls away, exposing more of the tooth root. Common causes include aggressive brushing, gum disease, genetics, teeth grinding, and tobacco use. Once that tissue is gone, your body lacks the biological machinery to regenerate it. Research at King’s College London found that gum cells actively release inhibitors that block bone-forming proteins, essentially preventing the underlying jawbone and tissue from rebuilding. This is why even after gum disease is treated, the lost structure stays lost unless you intervene with a repair procedure.
Deep Cleaning as a First Step
If your recession is mild to moderate and caused by gum disease, the first treatment is usually scaling and root planing, a nonsurgical deep cleaning. This procedure removes tartar and bacteria that have built up around the roots of your teeth, then smooths the root surfaces so plaque can’t easily reattach. It won’t reverse recession that’s already happened, but it stops the disease from progressing further and prevents additional tissue loss.
One thing to expect: if your gums were swollen from infection before the cleaning, they’ll shrink back to their normal size once the inflammation resolves. This can temporarily make it look like your recession has gotten worse, since more of the tooth root becomes visible. That’s actually a sign of healing, not new damage. For early-stage recession, deep cleaning combined with better home care may be all you need.
Gum Grafting Surgery
Gum grafting is the most established surgical repair for recession. A periodontist takes a small piece of tissue, usually from the roof of your mouth, and stitches it over the exposed root. There are a few variations. A connective tissue graft uses tissue from under the skin of your palate. A free gingival graft takes tissue directly from the palate surface. In some cases, donor tissue from a tissue bank can be used instead, which eliminates the need for a second surgical site in your mouth.
Recovery takes longer than newer alternatives. For the first one to two weeks, you’ll eat only soft foods and avoid chewing near the graft. After two weeks, you can gradually reintroduce solid foods on the opposite side. By three to four weeks, most people return to a more normal diet while still avoiding crunchy or hard foods near the surgical area. Full healing takes six to eight weeks.
During recovery, you’ll want to sleep with your head slightly elevated to reduce swelling, skip carbonated drinks (which can irritate the site and cause the graft to fail), avoid straws, hold off on alcohol for at least a week, and stay away from hot coffee for the first 48 to 72 hours. Smoking in the first week significantly delays healing and raises complication risk. Cost typically ranges from $600 to $3,000 per tooth or treated area, depending on the complexity and your location.
Pinhole Surgical Technique
The Pinhole Surgical Technique is a minimally invasive alternative that repositions your existing gum tissue without any grafting. Instead of cutting and stitching, your periodontist makes a tiny pinhole above the receded area, then uses specialized instruments to loosen the gum tissue and slide it down over the exposed root. No incisions, no sutures, no donor site.
The practical advantages are significant. Healing often takes days rather than weeks, discomfort is minimal compared to grafting, and you see cosmetic improvement immediately. Perhaps the biggest benefit: multiple teeth can be treated in a single visit, while grafting typically addresses one or two teeth at a time. Not every case of recession qualifies for this technique, so your periodontist will assess whether your tissue is thick enough and your bone loss isn’t too severe.
Laser-Assisted Treatment
LANAP (Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure) uses a specific wavelength of laser energy to treat the diseased tissue around your teeth while leaving healthy tissue intact. It received FDA clearance in 2004, and the PerioLase laser used in the procedure was approved in 2016 as the only device in medicine or dentistry shown to promote true tissue regeneration.
The clinical results are encouraging. In studies of patients with deep gum pockets (5 millimeters or more), 88% of treated sites showed reduced pocket depth, dropping from an average of 6.5 mm to 3.9 mm. Histologic examination of treated sites has confirmed new bone, new cementum (the layer covering tooth roots), and new connective tissue forming in half of treated areas. LANAP is particularly useful for patients who have gum disease driving their recession, since it addresses the infection and promotes regeneration simultaneously.
Biologics That Enhance Healing
When your periodontist performs surgery, they may apply a biologic product to the root surface to boost regeneration. One widely used option mimics the proteins that originally formed your tooth’s supporting structures during development. Clinical studies show it produces roughly 1.8 mm of new tissue attachment on average, and when used on deep bone defects, it fills in more than three times as much bone compared to surgery alone. These biologics are typically used alongside grafting or flap surgery rather than as a standalone treatment, so they add to the effectiveness of whatever procedure you’re already having.
Preventing Further Recession at Home
Whether you’ve had a repair procedure or you’re trying to keep mild recession from worsening, what you do at home matters more than most people realize. An 11-year study published in the Journal of Clinical Periodontology found that electric toothbrush users had 22% less gum recession and 18% less tooth decay compared to manual toothbrush users. Oscillating heads, the kind that rotate in both directions, are the most effective at removing plaque without excessive pressure.
Brushing technique is just as important as the tool. Use gentle pressure for two minutes, twice a day, with fluoride toothpaste. Many electric toothbrushes now include pressure sensors that alert you when you’re pushing too hard, which is worth paying attention to since aggressive brushing is one of the top causes of recession in the first place. Clean between your teeth daily with floss or interdental brushes.
